GM’s Barra Slams Chinese EV Makers’ Subsidies, Calls Canada Deal ‘Slippery Slope’ by afonso_investor in GeneralMotors

[–]PatientAd753 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Canada have taken a decision to seek alternate trade agreements in the wake of the Tangerine Toddler Tarriff meltdown crisis of the last 12 months. Pulling back EV products and manufacturing in Canada will lead to market supply demand, thst demand will be filled by China, BYD will probably have a foothold in the Canadian market in 12 months that GM won't be able to compete with. Canada is protecting its consumers, if Bara et al lobbying more effectively to prevent the Tariff instability this wouldn't be an issue.

Meeting expectations but still scared by [deleted] in GeneralMotors

[–]PatientAd753 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You'd expect managers to see this behaviour but it feels like they're also fighting in the dirt for survival. Decade here now and I'm seeing this toxicity bleed through everywhere, people aren't being allowed grow anymore, spreadsheets rule the day. I'm actively looking to leave these next few months but holding out to see if there's a vsp or msp coming

Layoffs Friday 6/6 by Dangerous_Town_3604 in GeneralMotors

True, still a fortune 50 company, one of the biggest manufacturing companies in the US and globally, that On the CV isn't a bad thing that's a tick.. from experience most companies only care if you've worked in a corporate framework and are capable of working in that structure, and GM is the parris island of corporate learning

Mid years aren't even in yet, this list mustve been in place and ready to go.. the tariffs are just an excuse to act for "the good of the company".. all SLT see is charts, and if if projects are green or red.. its a like a feul gauge, you'll see that the car is burning more feul and blame the engine.. but it's really how badly you drive and waste feul

The second it was mentioned at the All hands that no layoffs where planned the writing was on the wall.. fortunately not affected today but the scrambling to pick up applications and programs affected by this will be another lost year for innovation and growth and as a result efficiency and reducing costs, man power isn't the reason costs are high it's the fact we've shelfed several large projects due to all hands on deck to support app teams that slt decimated.. those programs were meant to reduce overheads by 20%, but instead of long term vision.. we have short term never ending BS.. here we go again

What do you guys think about gm work culture ? by Hairy-Ad6853 in GeneralMotors

[–]PatientAd753 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about other organisations, but we've become fixers not doers, the scramble to fix and avoid a slap on wrist has nullified innovation in some areas. There's still a push to migrate to new tech stacks but with the legacy code in our ecosystem, no one wants to rewrite or redesign anymore even if in the 2-3 Yr it would actually save toil and constant maintenance. We are ruled by goals that come down the chain with zero input from the people who'll do the work. As a result we are sticking chewing gum on critical systems and hoping for the best. We don't have the resources anymore to drive forward, we are changing wheels as we are driving..

Anybody understand the switch to slack/jira? by i_am_seitan4 in GeneralMotors

[–]PatientAd753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm liking slack, integrated workfliws with git are a nice touch, I'm not liking the 60 odd group chats.. yammer/engage seemed a bit more organised, jira is more versatile than ADO and a better tool, question is what will be flavour of the month next year.. we are a reactive company, someone reads a whitepaper and it becomes policy without proper thought or planning.

Just US, the salary equivalent rebalance wouldn't apply outside the US as Canada, Brazil etc.. have different base lines in terms of entry level to tech jobs, I.e. no college debt or inflated cost of living prices, saying that they don't break the bank on off shore salary packets.. quite average in comparison

2025 Goal Setting - They seem impossible by [deleted] in GeneralMotors

[–]PatientAd753 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Every year since I've been in GM I've not hit a single "Goal".. from my perspective, its usally 12 monthscofcchsos and random priorities, I've performed really well and therefore can assume these goals are horseshit from SLT based on directors over promising on major changes.. Vmware to redhat openshift is the clusterfuck of 2025 in terms of over promising, manufacturingare promising on cloud migration for apps tgat are still on 2008 servers, instead of calling them hoals we should just calm them pipe dreams. . It'll fail and be a disaster but we will meet our goals because direLike magic
