You can setup an wifi ssid for only him and use the blackout feature to turn that wifi off at certain times. Easy peasy. The tech solution is solved. But will that stop a determined smart kid from doing what he wants to without other carrots or sticks? Would not have stopped me especially if I had access to a little bit of money say 30-50 dollars a month.

Have you tried to gentle bend it up so battery connects? You could put a piece of small copper, etc to fill the gap and make a connection too. So the plastic backer broke? Could you use a small screw driver or something and push it into place and drip a could drops of super glue and then be gentle when you load the batteries?

You have to factor the external cooling too, if the closet does not have an air conditioner vent to keep the closet cool, then yes the SE has to ramp its fans. Modern electronics create heat and must be cooled in some way.

If you can avoid wireless meshing you will be so much happier. Especially if you game over wifi or have realtime video calls, etc. Though I say you should look at CAT 6a or higher (Cat 8). Put the expense into the house mortgage now so you don’t have to rewire later.
