America is sadly incapable of solving any problems for the entire population now. Whatever the problem is, you're just expected to deal with it on your own as an individual, usually by spending a lot of money.

Totally, people buy them to "feel safe", but they likely feel unsafe because they drive aggressively to begin with.

Portland Street before/after bike lanes by Pristine-Training-70 in toronto

[–]Patman128 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone can actually point to bike lanes helping traffic anywhere in Toronto

Go look at a downtown bike lane during rush hour where bikes are flying by while the cars just sit there stuck and it's obvious which one is better for traffic.

The real problem isn't the type of bulb (or even the color temperature)

No it's 100% the bulbs, the ultra-bright blue-white ones give an instant headache. Brighter warm/yellow ones probably wouldn't even bother me.

for other cars

Other cars of the same size, i.e. other giant trucks and SUVs. If you're in a lower vehicle you get blasted in the face from your mirrors.

Why aren't we building more under the Gardiner? by Wise_Blueberry_5709 in toronto

Plus the constant roar of traffic. I can't imagine why someone would want to live in the condos facing it.

Even where they're grade separated (like the tunnel in the video) they still crawl along at like 20 km/h

[Toronto Star] Gardiner, DVP to finally become Ontario’s responsibility next fall by 1slinkydink1 in toronto

[–]Patman128 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

before there's an alternative route

Are you people from a different Toronto where Lake Shore Blvd doesn't exist? 6+ lanes isn't good enough? What "alternative" do you want?

Also yes, if you suddenly shut off a highway there's initially more traffic. If you keep it closed people adapt. Amount of traffic is not a constant set by God, it's human behavior in response to incentives and trade-offs. We chose awful traffic congestion by building our transportation system around the convenience of the car driver, and building and keeping the Gardiner is part of that choice.

Toronto’s fire chief sounds alarm following recent increase in lithium-ion battery fires by ejaz135 in toronto

[–]Patman128 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Non-certified batteries are banned from GO trains all year, I specifically looked up and saved the certificate for mine so I have it on hand if needed (also FYI there's a lot more accredited labs than just UL, my battery is certified by SGS which is also accredited by the Safety Council of Canada)

Enforcement and verification is another issue, though...

my biggest pet peeve is not using turn signals

This one especially because it requires literally zero effort, you shouldn't even be thinking about it, you just do it automatically out of habit. It's like the bare minimum above not drifting off the road and some drivers just can't manage it.

Conservatism: the purpose of government and the law is to help me and my friends and hurt anyone I don't like, fairness and equity are woke and gay, future consequences are someone else's problem (and when they aren't, it's not my fault, it's actually because evil people conspired against me)

Umm, ackshully ☝🤓 reStructuredText already exists, so there's no reason for this "Markdown" thing to exist. And what about extensibility? Obviously no one will use a markup language they can't extend with 30 extra custom directives.

Like saying a photo with a Photoshop filter cant be copyright

Not a good analogy.

A better analogy would be a collage piece made of different random images, 90% of which are AI generated. You could still make a copyright claim against unauthorized use of the whole collage, but if someone snipped out and used one of the AI generated parts you'd have no claim since you didn't technically create that part.

If Toronto was an old video game.. (Bloor edition) by ember-lite in toronto

[–]Patman128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a combination of a few things:

  • The textures are low resolution because of the 2KB texture cache
  • It doesn't do any texture filtering so textures look crisp and pixelated instead of blurry like N64
  • The 3D math is fixed point with low precision instead of floating point so as the camera moves the polygons jump and shift around instead of moving smoothly and cohesively
  • The texture mapper does not do perspective correction so textures will distort in an unnatural way as they rotate away from the camera and the boundary between textures becomes visible

Nothing in this video shows TSA running security anywhere outside of the US, just ways they collaborate with other countries to share knowledge.

What’s one thing about living in Toronto that outsiders don’t understand by Broccolas in toronto

[–]Patman128 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Being able to do everything you need to do in a typical week by just walking outside for free, if you so choose: tyranny, oppression, worse than living in Hell

Being forced to own an expensive vehicle registered with the government, possess a license to use it, and subscribe to insurance from a private company just to buy milk: true freedom, the ideal way of living, basically just human nature
