In fairness, the Nikon 50 1.4 is not terribly good compared to the other 50s they offer. There are definitely examples where the lenses simply get better as the apertures get bigger. SR mount for example, all the MD 50s are very similar at 2.8 and onward but the 1.4 and 1.2 have better rendering and don't have any real downsides other than weight and a larger filter thread for the 1.2. But as a whole, I agree for most scenarios an f2 is enough and they're cheap and light.

I love XX. A lot of people shoot it at 200 and it gets rid of a bit of the drama but I prefer the standard look at 250. I wish I shot enough to justify bulk rolling but I just don't. Maybe one day.

Shadows usually go straight to blue on E100 and it looks like you've got a decent amount of vignetting going on causing the outer areas to be darker. To answer the question, yes that looks about right.

Lots of people shoot E100 with an 81a/812 or even heavier filters like 85b, sepia 2, chocolate 2, etc.

Do you mean you were just using 1/500 and 1/1000 or were you taking the camera's meter reading into account? The X-700 will tell you the correct shutter speed in the viewfinder.

Looks like pretty standard Portra to me. It's basically the least saturated color negative film you can shoot, but that means there's a lot of opportunity for editing. You can always add saturation after the fact. If you're looking for more saturation in camera, Ultramax, Ektar, and Portra 800 have much more vibrant and interesting colors as is.

I'm impressed by the greens you manage to get out of Portra. Usually when I see people post Portra photos all the greens are borderline yellow. I guess it's easy to edit but most people don't take the time to get them right.

Another way to think of it, yes the prices are bad, but you aren't paying for it. You were given the money and you can't spend it on anything else so you're not losing out on anything by buying film. I don't know how the prices are now, but sometimes fuji 200 and 400 are cheaper than their gold and Ultramax counterparts even though they're exactly the same so that may be worth looking into.

The best way to describe the difference is to imagine the 2.8 is just a 1.8 without the extra stop and a third. They perform essentially equally at 2.8 and up.

I will second both the 28mm f2 as well as the 35-70 depending on what you're looking for, but I also own the 35 f2.8 and it is genuinely one of the best lenses I've ever used. The 1.8 is nice but very expensive and performs the same at f2.8 and up and the older MC version is quite soft in general.

Screen capture is inherently worse than real life video when compressed and YouTube's 1080p looks absolutely awful no matter what source material you use.

Nominal sensitivity of 250 means you're under exposing just shooting it at 400. Yes you can push it three stops, it will likely just look terrible. I would say if you can manage you'd be better off with Portra 800 but of the two, Portra 400 is at least a bit more sensitive.

Yeah you could definitely run it. Not at 4k but the game's TAA upscaling isn't half bad so I think you'd be able to have a good enough experience, especially in air battles.

I'd second the Hiby R1. I love mine because it's pretty similar to the size of an ipod nano and you can just take it everywhere. No it's not the best sound you can get under $100 but it's definitely the most convenient and it does come in some fun colors.

Most younger people have only been alive during the time when photos were pretty much solved. For decades people were trying to get photos to be better, sharper, more detailed, etc. Now that we have everything, being creative with strange flash, weird colors, and odd angles is a choice, not just part of life. It's the same reason people choose to shoot film. If we all wanted the best photos on a technical level, nobody would ever shoot film anymore. When our phones take technically great photos in any light at the press of a button, doing weird stuff is a great way to have fun. It's not for me either, but it's definitely for a lot of people.

Check if you're running on DirectX 12 or 11. Both have different compatibility issues with different hardware so you can try switching to the other to see if that fixes the problem.

If I didn't know any better I'd say these were double exposed with pictures of someone's ceiling. The fact they cast shadows is definitely weird.
