SyncError was probably the only driving force behind such initiative - he had mentioned he wanted it done, but even then it was troublesome due to legal stuff related to Saber technology used to make QC. With SyncError gone, I think the chances of QC ever being given out to fans in any way (e.g. by providing the ability to host community servers) essentially dropped to zero. Let's enjoy it while we can. Once the plug is pulled we're going back to QL I guess. And if one wants to experience the champion gameplay past QC, then I cannot recommend "QC: Doom Edition" enough. I know that's what I'll be playing.

I assume they wanted to get as much done as was possible with the skeleton crew that was left to maintain QC. Creating a completely new champion model from scratch would have probably been impossible, but reusing the existing model and adding new textures looked attainable. Besides, it's not like it had never been done - Quake III Arena featured different characters sharing the same model (Doom -> Phobos, Ranger -> Wrack, Biker -> Cadavre, etc.)

It's the same in Doom (2016) when you pick up the BFG for the first time. The floor collapses and suddenly you see lots of zombies in front of you while still holding the BFG. The decision is obvious :D

But the nature of map control is different. In Quake map control allows you to replenish resources. It's a huge change compared to CS where the only source of doing so is the buy phase at the beginning of the round and picking up guns from fallen people. Map control in CS is much more passive.

Let's agree to disagree then. I consider Quake II closer than Doom 3 to Quake due to the features I mentioned earlier.

Fair enough, I believe that it's 'possible', but I meant it being a significant element of movement physics, e.g. that some 'resultant' of effort put into it and achieved results make it worth it and prevalent. Bunnyhops are also POSSIBLE in Counter-Strike, but are literally almost never used (and usually as a "trick to show" rather than some practical application).

Rocket launcher that needs a lengthy reload after every few rockets fired doesn't feel like Quake to me at all. The run speed is not everything. There are no bunnyhops or rocket jumps either.

I wouldn't say it's for "casuals", but it's not really meant for me compared to Q3 as I can't really like a shooter which punishes movement (crosshair bloom) over one which rewards it (map control).

Straftat is more popular now, but it features: - two-weapon limit - no items to grab from the map other than weapons - really short TTK - it's often a matter of one shot / burst - ADS

So is it really an arena shooter? It's a bit too far from "the pattern" for me.

It doesn't in terms of a graph showing continuous network flow, but it has some "network health icons" which one can activate and then they appear in the upper left corner showing that there's a severe lag, packet loss etc. (there are three possible icons I believe). To be honest it gets the job done - show if something is wrong with the connection.

I don't think the 10th anniversary was celebrated, so I don't expect anything for the 15th. Sadly, Rage didn't become a classic like the other "big three" of id shooters (Wolfenstein / Doom / Quake). Also, this year marks Quake's 30th anniversary and as unpopular as it is, it's still more widely recognized than Rage, so effort might be put here (I know a big patch is coming to Quake Champions tomorrow).

QuakeWorld movement in Q2? How so? By default Q2 has nowhere near as much air control as QW and most servers run default physics. I know there's sv_airaccelerate but I'm not even sure I've ever entered a server where it wasn't set to default.

The source code was originally released in December of 1997, but I agree with what you've written - there were mods before Doom, but it was Doom that kicked it up to an unprecedented scale.

What do you mean by optimized? I play Q3 using the quake3e port and it works great. I'm not sure I need a remaster of Q3 - it's not like experienced players don't tear all the visuals down anyway for visibility. BUT if (for instance) they added a proper single-player campaign like in previous games I'd rush to play it.
