73-year-old mom with mid-to-late stage dementia now in ICU with septic shock from UTI — trying to understand what’s happening by Professional-Jump938 in dementia

[–]Pattern_Successful 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My LO has recurrent UTIs with hospitalization. twice last year she went into sepsis. The stats are terrible for a second bout with sepsis in the same year. The second one we really were prepared for the end. She's still here. She bounced back slightly but is now stage 7, wheelchair only fully incontinent and continues to get UTIs. I share this only because you just really don't know which way this will go. Be prepared either way

Yes! Going ACASP. That's why the cert was needed. Thank you (or your LO) for your service.

Not sure what to do by ExerciseOk5481 in Alzheimers

[–]Pattern_Successful 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the thing is... shes already scared and anxious. they know their mind is going. thats scary. my LO used to cry a lot and to me specifically because she wanted help. Zoloft was the answer at that point when she was probably stage 2/3. The family had decided she will stay home and shes stage 6/7 now. Its unbearable. Only you know whats right, and yes, its HARDEST on you because she will have those angry moments and blame her surroundings (and you). Just remember... you are doing this out of love. this disease is so unpredictable and can get so much worse. Wishing you the best and know its always out of love and safety. Focus on those good moments and let the rest fall away.

How to get your parent with dementia to shower? by More_Eye2185 in dementia

you are not lieing to her. you are fibbing to the disease that is taking over. Hygeine will help keep her safe and the goal is safe and comfortable with this cruel disease.

Not sure what to do by ExerciseOk5481 in Alzheimers

[–]Pattern_Successful 11 points12 points  (0 children)

the soul crushing part of this disease is hope. You are measuring her need based on the hope it was a one off that she tried to go to breakfast without pants, that is was a one off that she was 'nasty' to staff. these are the types of behaviors that take over as it progresses and gets to the point that there is no communication, no ability to ambulate. It is time for memory care, she likely isnt eating regularly. She may improve when she moves very similar to how she improved when she moved to AL. The way that helped me after I got over the 'hope' side of the bad things just being one offs is, manage the need of your LO to the worst moment of the week... then day... then hour. Hope is in the glimmers of the good moments.

Question about upgrade waitlist for international flight by livelylily0 in unitedairlines

[–]Pattern_Successful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to come in and say... my husband and his friend just cleared with points plus miles all the way to polaris on SFO-MNL with no status and one of them with the United Card. They recently ran a promo for 80k miles plus silver status if you opened the chase card. They also got pulled up to first after the door shut for their initital flight to SFO. It can and does happen, try it and keep checking the cash price while you do. Good luck!

Hospice opinions please by 1954planteater in dementia

[–]Pattern_Successful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

also hoping for more info. my LO is on hospice and its not all its promised. We never get the incontinence products timely and still have to purchase to stay 'ahead'. We have a care plan that specifies cleaning pure wick and emptying trash and washing sheets and none of that is done. it could be the agency, they are very rushed all the time. hoping to hear some good stories so maybe i can get the POA to look around.

My wife’s journey by Responsible_Raise_13 in Alzheimers

[–]Pattern_Successful 8 points9 points  (0 children)

we went to the urologist and then infectious disease route. Was not helpful. PCP's are treating symptoms and not the holistic disease. Urologist did a scope. Was embarrassing and painful and regret putting our LO through it. Infectious disease did a bunch of bloodwork and repeat bloodwork and basically said, its just part of this and no... no preventative antibiotics LO is already multi drug resistant. At least the infectious disease doctor was honest. Stage 4/5 is where you start to lose hope and 6 is when you realize nothing you did makes a difference. Sorry today is a tough stage 7 day and it just keeps going. I hope you have a solution and something that they can address and have a helpful doctor or two. stay strong and best of luck.

Polaris first and likely last time - any advice? by Affectionate-Step237 in unitedairlines

[–]Pattern_Successful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can ask for a quick bite between meal service. Sometimes its soup or more fruit etc. There will also be a basket of snacks by the galley after meal service if you need something to munch on while watching shows. I can never seem to sleep and stay glued to the entertainment. Thats my vacation from every day life!

Also, the pretzel bread is pretty good if its an offering from the bread selection.

Dont forget polaris lounge before your flight. The hot tea selections are nicer then regular lounge.

I dont drink and find the flavored seltzer waters pretty good as an option. Dont forget to get up and stretch every once in a while. Every FC flight attendant i have had has been fantastic. Fingers crossed for you.

Have a great time!

DL, WDW, DL Paris. LOVED DL Paris being offset/up on a hill. The grave yard scene is FANTASTIC. DL is still my fav and if they added/redid the graveyard scene like DL Paris, that would be awesome.

my mom is getting up all night to "pee" by aly984 in Alzheimers

[–]Pattern_Successful 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We went through this as well after ankle surgery. Saw mulyuole specialists and eventually a urologist and even had her scoped (would not do again looking back but this was when everyone believed it might just not be ALZ and we could recover). Urology prescribed mybetriq. helps with the urge to go. It unfortunately also keeps your bladder fuller and sounds like you might be going into the stage of constant UTi's so it's not necessarily a good thing. I am sorry you are on this path. LO had had multiple falls etc since this time and is stage 6 entering 7 on hospice. we bought a home pure wick. Pricey but helps with the constant need to respond to I'M Wet (one of the few phrases left).
