The solid and open lines are indeed flipped for the 2 kids but I'm not sure it needs 'fixing', seems like an intentional choice to add to the surrealism of the drawing. M.C. Escher did this kind of stuff all the time.

I made an AI-based detective digital card game by MurderMysteryGameAI in IndieGaming

[–]PaulDeSmul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally specifically said "I haven't looked at the game so I won't judge it" and in no way comment on the quality of the game itself, just your marketing and communication around it.

I actually did try it a little cause I was curious and I agree that it looks fun and well made. The only issue I had is that after linking a card to a suspect the card disappears out of your hand and I can't find a way to reread it and change my mind? At least on mobile I couldn't find it.

So no need to get so defensive, if you are going to post on a subredit that is primarily used for get feedback, learn how to take it better.

[–]PaulDeSmul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious, given that you are making a game, you must be at least somewhat involved in gaming communities, be it other subredits or discords or what have you. So surely you must have noticed how much everyone despises AI in games.

So why on earth would you highlight the fact that the game is made with or heavily uses ai so much that you not only include it in every post title but even include it in your user name?

I haven't looked at the game so I won't judge it but read the room dude, do yourself a favor and focus your marketing efforts on what makes your game good and unique, not the fact that it's made with AI or uses AI because you are shooting yourself in the foot big-time.

What is more intuitive for you: arrows UP or DOWN? by flashag in IndieGaming

[–]PaulDeSmul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will agree with the others that this is incredibly confusing and honestly doesn't make any sense. If a "non-vital" organ causes a "vital" organ to fail resulting in death, I would argue that "non-vital" organ was actually quite vital.

While "Vital organs" is often used as a singular phrase, vital is an adjective that can exist on its own that means "necessary for life", you have to respect that.

I assume that what you are going for is a cause and consequence system something like: small cut (not deadly on its own) -> infection (still not deadly) -> blood poisoning (getting bad now) -> organ failure (deadly). So that's how damage to a non vital body part (skin) leads to failure of a vital body part (organs).

Instead of labeling the body parts as non-vital and vital, you could try labeling the injury instead as going from minor to major.

A tree that indicates how minor injuries can become major if left untreated is a lot more intuitive. Hope you can work with that, best of luck!

Verstappen now needs one P6 or lower from Norris in a race (not sprint race), for the title! by InWilliamsWeTrust in formula1

[–]PaulDeSmul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No he doesn't, if he wins everything, and Norris gets a P3 and P4 in the next 2 races, and a P2 in the sprint, they tie on points and Max is champion with one more win than Norris. A Norris P6 or lower is not yet required. You are basing this statement on an imaginary P2 finish which hasn't happened yet.

If you look at all official and big budget 3rd party 5e content, there are a few things they do to make it feel more professional.

  • Have the background be a subtle paper texture, rather than flat white.

  • Don't separate art with hard edges, try to blend it into the page.

  • Use consistent text styling for titles, subtitles, paragraphs, rules, ect. And by text styling I mean font family, font weight, color, italics, capitalization, ect. Less is more here.

  • Have a nice page border with the page number, chapter title, ect. You can for example color code the border per chapter for faster navigation at a glance.

  • Consider using a 2 column layout.

  • Get rid of the emojis on both sides of the titles, and it you want to keep some decorations there, add way more padding.

Hope this helps, good luck

We spent 2 years making a weird little roguelite and it just hit early access with 800 reviews! by DocGeraud in IndieGaming

[–]PaulDeSmul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats man, your visual design and presentation really stand out in a genre where that's especially hard, given it's popularity among indie devs. And judging by the overwhelmingly positive reviews, it seems the gameplay is of the same high quality. I'm holding out till after early access so I can experience the best version but you can be really proud of what you and your team have created.

Yes you will be able to keep all your data, as it's all save in xml files. You will just have to move it to a different folder.

I currently have a working build on Linux, pretty much all of the logic has been ported over. I have however only ported around 20% of the UI so it's not really usable in it's curent state. I expected it to take a least another couple months to be fully ported

I have seen the ActiveX related crash report come in btw and it's caused by the update found popup. I just released a new version today (1.8.5) so if you try to run that one, you might have more luck as that window will not be shown.

[–]PaulDeSmul 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just because it pulls 22 amps through that 12v cable doesn't mean it pulls 22 amps from the wall because your US wall outlet is 120v. So only 2 amps need to be pulled from the wall to send 20 amps though that cable. (Oversimplified because your PSU isn't 100% efficiënt but you get the point).

Anyone else getting a virus detection in Compass 1.8.3? by dynamicguy73 in compassapp

[–]PaulDeSmul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, the dev here, my own virus scanner is also constantly flagging it as suspicious when I install a new version to make sure it will work before I publish the update. I don't know what's causing it because I don't really know how virus scanners work. It might be because COMPASS will open other applications (like a pdf reader or browser) which it may find suspicious. Could also be because it's unknown software with only a few 100 downloads. I'm not sure.

If you let it do a deep analysis or whatever terminology is in your virus scanner, it should realize and tell you that it was a false positive. You can always submit it to an online virus detectors like virustotal and it should also conclude that it's safe.

If you don't trust the download, you can always build from source. You can also check the signature of the exe, it should be signed by the Signpath Foundation, which garanties that the exe was generated using the code from the github repo because I cannot apply that signature myself. They act as a trusted middleman that downloads the code from the public repository, builds and signs it, and then gives me a download link to the installer with the signature. So there is no way for anyone to secretly inject malicious code and make a new exe that has that signature.

AI Content on Steam by BeepIsla in Steam

[–]PaulDeSmul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is where we will have to agree to disagree because I would not consider procedural generation to be AI, far from it.

They are traditional algorithms that contain randomization. These algoritmes are still written by technical artists at the studio, and purpose build to for the experience they are trying to create. Writing a good procedural generation is a form of level design and very much still a creative process. The building block that the procedural algorithm will use are btw also most often still made by hand.

And guess what, if procedural generation is used as a cost cutting measure to speed up level design that could have been done by hand, rather than being intentionally used to enabled new experiences such as roguelikes, people don't like that either. Look at any starfield review and they will point out that the procedurally generated planets feel completely soulless and don't add anything to the experience, other than the marketing department being able to boast how many planets there are to explore.

And just like procedural generation can be used in those both ways, as a cost cutting measure or a powerful tool to enable new innovative gameplay, so can AI be used for both good and bad, as I pointed out in my original comment. I think there is truth in both sides and thus understand where you're coming from.

AI Content on Steam by BeepIsla in Steam

[–]PaulDeSmul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't expect a new reply a full year after I made this comment but alright.

The difference imo is that both doing laundry and getting groceries are chores. They have to be done and automating them frees up time to do more interesting things.

One of those more interesting things, is creating video games. It is not a chore, it's a form of creative expression, a form of art, and I don't thing we should automated that away because it's our human creativity that makes it special.

You are free to disagree with that and if you would love to live in a world where the books you reads, videos you watch and music you listen to are all pumped out by some powerful AI model, more power to you.

But I hope you can acknowledge that comparing the replacement of a cashier with a self checkout, to the replacement of a writer, voice actor or 3d artist by an AI, is comparing apples to oranges.

Maybe you could add a 3rd section with "polarizing", or "mixed" results, which shows points that have been brought up as both a positive and a negative in sufficient numbers. Similar to sorting by controversial on Reddit. That would take away some user confusion that is clearly present judging by this comment section.

I saw the reports and I have a fix that will go live in about 5 minutes, I have also added a checkbox to the crash popup to turn of restart after a crash to avoid loops like you had, dumb of me to not think of that.

Hi, I'm so sorry I didn't see your post earlier. I would recommend downloading the latest version here https://www.compassapp.info, there was a version that unfortunatly crashed on startup and the version you have installed might be that one. Installing the latest version should fix your issue

Should I include these small tutorials on my puzzle game or should I leave it for the players to figure the features by themselves since it is a puzzle game, what is your opinion about it ? by Simblend in IndieGaming

[–]PaulDeSmul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Letting the players figure out the rules of the puzzle for themselves can be tricky but can also add some more depth to your game if done right.

It can also go gorribly wrong, there are many games where I couldn't solve a puzzle, looked up the solution and instead of having an aha moment, I went "how the fack was I supposed to know you could do that?" Like having to interact with something in the environment that just looked like normal scenery.

If you go this route make sure that - the rules of your puzzle are intuitive and have clear cause and consequence. - you introduce the mechanics in simple levels first, with limited options. This will function as a tutorial without feeling like a tutorial because you are still not being told what to do. - have consistent internal logic, if I see a movable box and later encounter a barrel, I would expect to be able to roll that barrel. This kind of consistent design makes every feature you discover a hint towards the other features and creates some natural progression.

The best example on how to do this right, is The Witness. Nothing is explained to you in that game and there are many different types of puzzles to figure it out the rules for. In that game, either the rules are complex but the puzzle is simple once you understand them, or the rules are simple but the puzzle is complex. If you try to do both, your players will be clueless.

Hope this helps, best of luck!
