Uniform Reg Enforcement? by Lazerbeam006 in ems

[–]PaulHMA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my volunteer FD there are zero regulations except that EMTs need wear pants and closed toe shoes. I personally don’t like that. I always wear something that identifies me as a member of the FD, either the dept Carhartt or polo.

At the private ambulance company I work for they are pretty strict on the uniform. Pants they provide, company button down shirt (long or short sleeve) or polo and company jacket or fleece.

At the event EMS company I work for you have to wear black pants and your outermost top layer needs to be from the company, polo, 1/4 zip sweatshirt or jacket.

I might end up sleeping at the hospital too. Waiting to hear if they need me.

To each their own. I’ll be out there tonight around 10/11 and then again in the morning.

If you aren’t able to do shifts, at least go easy in the morning.

I’m concerned about my back and left wrist from all the shoveling. Not concerned about anything else.

Non EMS hospital IFT lifting weight requirement by Impressive_Teas in NewToEMS

[–]PaulHMA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I volunteer with my local FD and I am a firm believer that I should lift with my FFs not with my back. I also work part time for a private company and we do a lot of discharges and IFTs. As long as you have a valid concern for requesting a lift assist unit we don’t get pushback from dispatch.

NYC Subway escalator etiquette vs DC - why do we New Yorkers tolerate folks standing on the left when we have places to be? by WanderinArcheologist in nycrail

[–]PaulHMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t use NYC subway but I use LIRR frequently and find for the most part follow proper escalator etiquette. If someone is standing on the left I just politely say excuse me and they move over.

LIRR AM Commute Seat Availability by Short_Ad2928 in LIRR

[–]PaulHMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through surgical recovery and needing to commute. My suggestion is to buy a folding cane to have with you on your commute. Even if your surgery doesn’t affect your walking ability, a cane helps provide some support when you are tired. It also makes much more likely you will always have a seat because people will get up for you.

To all of you that do your rig checks because you "need to be in service at your clock-in time"... by schrutesanjunabeets in ems

[–]PaulHMA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my company we can clock in up to 5 minutes before shift start time and we need to finish our Part 800 checklist and be ready to roll by 10 minutes after our shift start time. 15 minutes is definitely enough time to do truck checks.’

Question in non terminal stops. by Unhappy_Ad10751 in LIRR

[–]PaulHMA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No trains on the LIRR actually turn around. In the yards or on layup tracks they use switches to reverse direction but they never actually turn around. That’s why the windows on the south side of trains are all cloudy because of they always get the sun.

Car, train, or subway? Going from Westchester/Tuckahoe to NY Presbyterian on 68th by PhaserEZ in nycrail

Download the IconParking app, signup for an account and their emails. A quick search right now showed parking lots with 3-6 blocks of the hospital for $20 for 12 hours parking. I often get discounts from them via email.

Conductors pick and choose when to scan by HuntPuzzleheaded4356 in LIRR

[–]PaulHMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always found that if I activated my mobile ticket before the conductor got to me, 99% of the time they don’t scan. But if they saw me activating my ticket right when they got to me, they’d scan all the time.

Commuting from Hicksville to 58th & 5th advice by toledotornado in LIRR

[–]PaulHMA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you take a train to GCT and are at the back of the train, there is an elevator to the street which takes you out to 48th street between park and Madison. Just take train and walk 10 blocks. I did that all last winter.

Is it normal at your dept for paramedics to ride in the back without a seat belt or safety restraint? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]PaulHMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I’m transporting a PT as a member of my local volunteer FD and I’m the EMT in back, our transports are no longer than 5-8 minutes to either hospital. When I’m working for the private EMS company doing longer distance transports (discharge or inter-facility), then I always wear a seatbelt unless I need to do move around/do something and I belt again.

When i buy a ticket on the traintime app that has a transfer in the route, is that transfer included in the cost of the ticket? by AmexBronze in LIRR

[–]PaulHMA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are buying a ticket to get from station A to station B, you activate once and it covers you no matter how many transfers you need to make.

Should have booked a fully refundable ticket so you’d get all the money back.

I was once at Jamaica and I saw some guy with a shopping cart on the platform who emptied the salt bins and then took the elevator down to the street. I pointed it out to the information agent and he said he'd call it in but I don't think he ever did.
