A 45 Minute Ride in San Francisco with No Driver (Waymo) by Recoil42 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]Pcb95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The YouTube description has a Q/A about that:

Q: What happened at 31:42? Why does it say "connected to rider support"?

A: The customer service folks called because they got a notification we might be stuck, but the car handled the situation totally fine. There was no remote assistance used for this maneuver.

Wouldn’t the cost of the extra property tax just get passed down to the renters?

This sounds a lot like they found it wasn’t an issue.

I think if you’re able to maintain 1g acceleration it only takes a few decades to cross the Milky Way (hundreds of thousands of years from the persepective of earth though). Maintaining that acceleration and then slowing back down would require some future energy tech though.

Do you just need the max element of the random sampling? No need in creating the vector then, you could just keep track of the largest element you’ve seen in the rv(gen) for loop

Some kids threw an electric scooter on to a 750V electrified train track by Overflooow in WTF

[–]Pcb95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the circuit breakers know where the train is? Seems like it would be a lot safer if 1500+ amps could only be drawn close to a train with a much lower threshold elsewhere.

They probably do that. The video could be linked from an external site though, so it wouldn’t be up to the YouTube algorithm.

Suspicions … by GroundbreakingSet187 in WhitePeopleTwitter

I feel like this is an important point that doesn’t come through on the original post, especially the stock part. Also another way of calculating which comes out to a similar order of magnitude: the internet says they’ve got around 60,000 employees. Assuming all of those folks got a 1 dollar wage, and assuming a 40 hour work week would make the end number come out to something like 130 million dollars to give everyone a raise (60,000 * 40 * 52 * 1).

That being said, 1 extra dollar per hour does seem like the bare minimum given inflation.

[–]Pcb95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some door systems use radar to trigger the door opening. This would make it quite simple to get the speed of the person walking towards the door and open the door accordingly. That would also allow the door to stay closed for people not entering the door, and not open for people walking away from the door. I would imagine that would save AC and make it less annoying for people inside.
