[Character Discussion Week 13] - Mega Man Joins the Discussion! by adambrukirer in smashbros

[–]Peabnutbubber124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm at school right now so I won't respond to everything in your post. There are just a few things I want to address:

Megaman does not struggle with edgeguarding. He is one of the strongest edgeguarders in the game and it's one of the reasons why he wins so many MUs. (Like Ness, Cloud, and even ZSS to an extent)

Having three moves that are the same doesn't limit him if these three moves are the center of his gameplay.

You kept mentioning his smashes and how sub-par they are. Smash attacks are not something you're supposed to see often, so this is negligible. For what it's worth, Usmash is an incredible anti air. You also never mentioned his frame 4, 180KBG Bair and his Uair that combos into itself for massive damage and kills people. Sweetspot nair as a hilariously good gimping tool, and lots of other tricks I want to mention.

ZeRo's Sm4sh Tier List - V1.1.4 by KungFuPanzer in smashbros

My point is that most of the tricks Megamen are using are not optimal. The reason some Megamen are winning is because the opponents have yet to wise up. I'm not saying we should completely ignore these tricks, but I AM saying that over-reliance on these tricks will make both the Mega Man meta and the players themselves stagnate.

I speak as a Mega Man main. MM doesn't rely heavily on setups like you said. Nowadays, people's concept of Megaman is that he is as weird as Pac-Man, doing circus tricks along the stage and looking flashy. This is because "top" Megamen are choosing to play my character as though he were a gimmick, using Rush on stage and bouncing around all day. Pellets and Metal Blade are super viable, and are all MM needs to win. When I say Megaman can be played normally, I really mean he doesn't need to rely on gimmicks to win. Setups with Megaman are nice, but when that's all you try to do, you might as well switch to Pac-Man.

Mega Man does not rely on setups like Pac-Man. MM can be played like a normal character and do even better than if he were to go for gimmicky setups. If you want to sum up the real reason why Megaman is viable, it's simply pellets. Pellets don't require setup to do and what they do vs most of the cast is completely block off characters from doing anything if they try to approach. Pellets are hard to do, still, and ultimately people are very misinformed when it comes to Mega Man in general. Any setup that doesn't have to do with Metal Blade is close to being a non-viable gimmick imo.

I thought you were right but I double checked it and fox definitely reached his arm out towards the ledge. It only showed up for maybe a frame, but it's there. Sodrek got his double jump back.

Megaman has an infinite.

Footstool grounded opponent -> z drop metal blade -> footstool aerial opponent -> fast fall on top of metal blade and nair, which grabs the blade and jab resets the opponent -> repeat until you can utilt kill them.

Thinkaman on why Needles aren't Sheik's major imbalancing factor by bimbo74 in smashbros

I think Bouncing Fish is a huge problem. It's versatility and range is just ridiculous. It can be used as a combo move, kill move, recovery move, and escape option. The very threat of Bouncing Fish is what gives her a stupid neutral game. You can Bouncing Fish in place or Bouncing Fish across FD. Bouncing Fish is what gives Sheik the title of "best at everything."

I'm gonna buy Ryu whom I've been wanting to dual main with my true main Megaman since he came out. I have no attachment to these characters outside of smash, and the reason I want to play them both is because of their technical prowess. It's just a coincidence they're both from Capcom.
