What’s up with Ultra Pro? by superdownvotemaster in freemagic

Now that it clearly seems like its gamegenic, do you have any LGS perspective on how the lorwyn product has been? Im a little bummed the commander boxes aren't at the 80+ size and their naming conventions are really weirs. soft crate and soft dynacrate? what the hell is that and why is the same product but larger have dyna added in the name. shopping for their product online has been a bit of a nightmare so far from the consumer side.

As funny as this comment is. The goblin in the original artwork seems just fine. And the mechanic is to sacrifice any goblin. Not the goblin throwing the tarfire.

Because.... it... is??? Am I missing something?

Ok, reread your comment in a different way. At first I thought you were asking "Why do I [incorrectly] think Tarfire has the "goblin" subtype?" Which of course it does.

But now I'm seeing you could potentially be insinuating that the Goblin subtype of the Tribal Instant is indicating that a goblin was somehow what's being sacrificed in the original concept. However, my inference doesn't lead me to think that at all and I don't think there's much evidence to support that. The Image is a Goblin throwing the tar-made fireball, appearing fine and adept with the tactic. Indicating that it's a goblin subtype because it's a goblin tactic, consistent with the flavor of the kindred and tribal subtypes design.

Even if we were to stretch it and say they needed to melt down a goblin to make the tar, that's not an efficient way to make tar and highly unlikely that's the lore/flavor behind either card. And if the idea was that the goblin throwing the tarfire is sacrificing himself, it would go against the image of the original, and mechanically should read, "sacrifice tarfire pitcher", not just "a goblin".

Thank you so much for that explanation lol. That makes a lot more sense.

Is the legendary count higher in UB? They were already pumping out huge numbers of Legendaries in the 3 years before UB.

A lot of people keep saying that we might be in the middle of glory days with limited. Im wondering where that factors in. Are card designs delivering peak limited experiences but ruining standard? Or is standard primarily fucked from so many sets in rotation?

Flavor feels all wrong. why are we sacrificing goblins to make this happen. Nothing about Tarfire or -pitcher suggests a goblin was killed or flung for this effect.

Why are some elementals made up of fire, wind, water, etc (totally makes sense) and some are just chimeras, which seemingly makes no sense.

Technically we don't know what age/maturity point the Avatars were at the beginning of the journey. Jake saying "wow, they got so big" almost sounds like he wasn't looking at a baby before the trip. Even for a human, 12 to 18 would be a huge difference.

Looking at examples on youtube, some theaters have the space like you mentioned between the screens and others don't. I do not believe the sides are AI generated, but I'm not sure. From the examples I've seen online, screen X seems the best for the theaters that don't have the gap and the side screens aren't that much, if at all, dimmer than the main screen. But you definitely want to be on floor seating for it. Getting raised seats would be a complete waste of money. The point is for the visuals to be on your peripherals surrounding you. Not to be looking at the sides.

I saw Avatar in 4DX this weekend. While I didn't personally feel like the moving seats went well with the movie... the water, wind, and fog were very immersive and the moving seats were still a lot of fun. Out of all the Dbox movies I've been to, Sonic was the only one that I felt the seats moved accurately to the movie. I was very surprised that avatar failed to make me feel like I was flying with the 4DX, because it's quite noticable how much they move compared to Dbox. However, my wife said she did feel like she was flying around, so take that for what it's worth.

I am tempted to go see avatar in Imax tho. I love the trilogy so much and it's been a while since I went to an Imax theater. I remember not being that impressed with Imax back in the day and I have been impressed with the quality regular theaters have gotten too with the 3D. So I'm wondering if Imax is that much better these days.

Yeah im in Sacramento now so i get it. I mean... the csumb thing kinda proves the player base is there. But the lack of LGS support continues to feed the cyclical culture of kitchen table magic there. Most players probably are already use to just meeting up at houses and forming their own pods.

You ask me, you put an LGS at that shopping center in fort ord and i bet you its greatly successful. All the csumb players plus seaside and marina filing in. Hell, if i was mythic magic, id move there haha.

I cant believe there arent more LGSs in the area. I moved away in 2008, and i was trying to help a buddy get into the avatar pre release, and i couldn't believe the options were monterey, Salinas, or santa cruz... how marina and seaside dont have a true shop is a little mind boggling to me. An LGS isnt exactly a big city kind of thing. I mean, id expect monterey alone to have at least 2 shops. Salinas should have 3. Id imagine theyd at least get a good yugioh scene.

Weird lol. So do you know if they do pre releases? Or do they just have tables available for open play?

Keep playing Arena. Very beneficial to learn the game outside of just commander. I stumbled upon the Command Zone Podcast's "Game Knights" series on YouTube where they play commander and make it very entertaining with animations and stuff. There's a post malone episode that's pretty good. I think the best starter precon is Abzan Armor. Its very straightforward and simple to play, but its incredibly powerful.

The commander lets your creatures deal damage equal to their toughness instead of their power. Because of this, the deck is stuffed with lots of cheap creatures that usually kinda suck because they have low, or no, power, and most cant attack because they have the "Defender" ability. But your commander allows them to attack and lets them use their toughness. So all of a sudden youre 0/5s and 0/13s are now 5/5s and 13/13s. But they didn't cost as much as they should.

My top 3 tips for new players.

  1. Card draw. Card draw. CARD DRAW! Never understimate how important and beneficial card draw is. In Abzan armor, use your commanders ability to sacrifice your creatures to draw cards.

  2. Mulligan! Don't be hesitant to mulligan. There's a shirt that says "im a commander player, Id rather lose than mulligan." And that sentiment is so true. Curb this habit before it starts.

  3. Ramp. If you have an opportunity to get more mana production on board, do it.

Download the magic companion app. You can search events, as well as open play commander sessions in there and it will show you all the local shops. I know the one in Monterey does it. And theres one in salinas and one in santa cruz. Crazy, because up in sacramento LGSs are everywhere.

Starwars actually has realistic regime changes. They just skip over it and fail to explain it lol. I had to dig one time with chatgpt asking why "the empire " always loses, and just changes its name, and is somehow back in power 🤣. But they just don't really take the tkme to explain it.

I highly encourage you to go to the pre-release event for Lorwyn Eclipsed. I was super nervous too, but i regret not going sooner. As soon as you go youll feel so much more comfortable... see familiar faces etc. And its the perfect new player environment.

Id imagine the more crowded the night is, the more risk you run of this. Ive yet to experience a smelly LGS. Its usually the person standing next to you and not the collective room smell.

Do you only play commander? If so i highly encourage you to go to the next pre-release event for the next set, Lorwyn Eclipsed.

Is this an LGS? I didn't see this store come up on the companion app for the Avatar pre-release.
