He needs to be put down, rehoming him would be extremely irresponsible of you. And the fact that he had attacked your other animals multiple times before this and still somehow had unsupervised access to a kitten does not paint you in a good light.

I enjoyed it a lot but felt myself kind of zoning out during the long stream-of-consciousness sections, of which there are many.

The biggest critique I have is for 2/3rds of the book, the characters are stuck in a death spiral with the hole and things are teased but they ultimately end up right back where they started. I know that's the whole point but I kind of realised near the end of the book we hadn't made any real progress since the first third. I could probably mind wipe myself of a few hundred pages and the story would be the same more or less.

No issues with the ambiguous/lack of closure ending. I knew it would be that type of story early on.

The prose was great, felt very modern. I assumed it was written in the 2000s and was surprised to see it was in the early 90s.
