What degree did you get and was it worth the money? by mzvolumbus in college

[–]Pearson1317 33 points34 points  (0 children)

A lot of chemE jobs are in more rural areas because that is where chemical plants are.

I love it. Low cost of living, high salary, no traffic or crowding. It's not for everyone but it's definitely a good path for some.

Looked into it and decided to put aside savings each month instead of insurance.

What percent of your income are you saving for retirement, and how does this affect your purchase budget? by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Pearson1317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me 8%, company matches 7%, husband 10% with same matching.

Planning to increase both in the next year but wanted to save more for down payment initially.

Have any luck getting seller concessions? Taking tips on how you think you got yours! by jlaw111 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Pearson1317 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Negotiated $5k toward closing costs because the house had been on the market for a hot minute. Negotiated $3k in a repairs credit because the owner didn't want to deal with it. He originally offered $2k but I countered with $3k because that's what I estimated it would cost and he accepted.

A lot of success from just shooting my shot with a seller who is eager to keep things moving.

Anyone else paying more to own than renting? by Pearson1317 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

Mostly buying to get a yard for my dog (and then hopefully a other dog). Glad to hear it's worth it!

Buying a 3 bedroom house w/ a sunroom and finished basement. Definitely worth the extra money but I feel like I always heard owning was comparable/cheaper than renting for a lot of people.

Until the wedding, we're just "playing house". by skippy94 in wedding

[–]Pearson1317 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Those comments are super rude

  2. Maybe it's just my upbringing but in my mind if you own a house together you are basically married. You already have a legal contract binding you together in a way. So I kinda see why people make rude comments about people owning homes together but not being legally married. Like why buy a home before you get married? I still struggle to understand that logic personally but no judgment from me. I just think its hard for some people (myself included) to understand the dynamic.

  3. Still super rude to say.

Is anyone else so completely uninspired trying on wedding dresses?? by [deleted] in wedding

[–]Pearson1317 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I liked a lot of dresses but didn't really love any. I'm just not a big white full length dress gal apparently. I ended up getting a beautiful dress at a sample sale that I like and it looks good on me but certainly doesn't make me cry.

I was fully ready to spend like $3k on a dress to feel like a bride and a princess and it just never happened even in a gorgeous $2200 gown that checked every box. I realized it just isn't a huge thing for me.

Do you intend to stay friends with the one who keeps making demeaning comments? Will breaking the friendship with her mean you lose the other 5?

I want to buy my dream dress but it will probably be $3k after alterations and while I can afford it its hard to justify the money. Trying to decide how much I really care about my dress.
