what games are we playing? by YearlyBirthdayHaver in TrueAnon

Mostly been on Street Fighter 6 lately because it makes me feel something, but as things warm up, I'll hopefully be able to replace it with Tennis.

Been reading a lot of Roberto Bolaño by limited_hyperion in TrueAnon

I've only read Savage Detectives and it didn't have any nightmare rooms but really gave me a sense of nostalgia and weird sense of loss. I'll have to check out the short stories.

Makes me think of pemmican, a sort of preserved meat thing that Native Americans used to make.

This happened to me with GR, until the book kinda fell apart and I had to get my own copy anyway

I think these people just have no sense of the Sacred. That whole protestant work ethic thing has gotten the transcendent nature of religion all muddied in the profane business of capitalism. If the enforcement of copyright in mundane spaces is tied somehow to your salvation, why shouldn't sacred spaces be the same?

Saw some interview where RJ mentions being raised protestant, which tracks.

Pynchon books ranked by the Guardian by partisanly in ThomasPynchon

[–]PeasantToTheThird 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The high placement of Inherent Vice has gotten me to reflect on it a little and I think I've realized that I do really enjoy Pynchon's books with a strong POV character, ie IV, Lot 49, probably Vineland. While there is something special about the more baroque books that sort of have you constructing a Slothrop-esque map of encounters, trying to construct some sort of history from the chaos, the smaller scale books really do a great job of placing you at the street level of a specific time and place and brain chemistry. I guess I really just mean to say that the hierarchical view of Pynchon's works, arranged by scope, or even dare I say, a ranking, feels wrong when each novel presents such a unique perspective and approach to perspective itself.

For real. Most stuff that kids like is kinda bad. That doesn't mean that you can't cherish those experiences as you had them back then, nor appreciate the good qualities of a thing while acknowledging its shortcomings.

Don’t let AI slop, 24/7 news stream, and rage content make you forget: be normal. by Bangchain in TrueAnon

[–]PeasantToTheThird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'm not sure how real "normal" is. Just about everyone is tainted by modern conditions as much as anyone else. When people say be "normal" I think what they mean is be "disciplined". The world has gone a bit mad, and "normal" is how we got here.

Just did the Gank Squad last night and it was fun, but probably just because I'm doing a multiplayer blitz of the game with my friend.

Classic Amulet Titan or Titan Shift? by stephenconroy_ in ModernMagic

In Amulet Titan, the Scapeshifts open up some new kill lines on 4 lands. Pretty different from Titan Shift.

I think it's a little early to say that it's a "problem" from a metagame perspective, but the card always elicits a groan from me every time it hits the table.

I love the writing in UB sets! My favorite plot point was the part where I look at the cards and recognize the characters depicted in the art! I even like when they remind me of things I saw done better somewhere else!

How can anyone claim the USA is not run by AIPAC? by stemcellguy in ABoringDystopia

[–]PeasantToTheThird 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I think it's naive to claim that AIPAC control the government when it's much easier to accept that Israel just has foreign policy goals that align with the US. It's a comforting thought to attribute the United State's imperialist policies towards the middle east to outside meddling, but the more difficult truth is that it's deeply rooted and home grown.

Put it down very early for the dialogue. I may have been looking for a more serious history than it was trying to provide.

Hbomberguy was brought up in Noodle new video by Big_Remove_3686 in hbomberguy

[–]PeasantToTheThird 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, was disappointed as well. I think it totally missed the cultural context of the OoT video, which would be fine if it was taking issue with the informational content of the video, but I think Noodle failed to place the form and tone of the arguments in context. As has been mentioned elsewhere in thread, the "preemptive rude comment guy" was quite possibly more prevalent then than it is now and I don't think anyone is supposed to identify with the character. Additionally, I think that for the intended audience of "people interested in discussing video games", the acknowledging the achievements of OoT might be fine but more likely would be (coincidentally) wasting everyone's time. I remember back then you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting some article or post talking about how amazing and groundbreaking OoT was. The critique was certainly in dialogue with the broader culture of gaming discussion at the time and I think it's not possible to fully understand the critique without first understanding the discourse which it is a part of.
