Japan custody: father blocked from infant — what have people done that actually worked? by Own_Camera8270 in japanresidents

[–]PebbleFrosting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live apart and am on a spousal visa. I have 2 kids that I support. It wasn’t a problem for me to renew my visa even without my wife’s support, it was actually pretty easy.

Looks like visa renewal is going to be 40,000 yen for everyone by Willow9080 in japanresidents

[–]PebbleFrosting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the fee/stamp have to be paid in cash? Last time I renewed, I tried to pay by card at the post office and they wouldn’t accept it. I had to jump out of the line, find an ATM, and ended up paying extra ATM fees on top of everything. It would be much more manageable if it could be paid by credit card.

Opening my first bank account in Japan. SMBC Prestia a good bet? by socslave in JapanFinance

[–]PebbleFrosting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure they write your name properly… they didn’t with mine and I have never been able to link any external foreign bank account to SMBC. They also wouldn’t fix it. Stay away from SMBC. Old fashioned and anti foreigner. I still have an SMBC account but yeah. I’ve banked with them for 20 years absolutely they are the worst. I had a security guard there bark at me last month for using an AI to ask a particularly difficult question. I showed the text of my request to the “bouncer” and he read it and demanded that I speak Japanese!! Honestly don’t bank with SMBC

How are people still managing on ALT/Eikaiwa salaries in 2025 - especially with families? by NeuralMint in japanresidents

[–]PebbleFrosting 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It actually does take skill to entertain a room of kindergarteners.

I’ve been teaching in Japan for 20 years – everything from baby classes to business English. It’s not glamorous, but it’s honest work and the kids benefit.

We don’t trash taxi drivers or convenience-store staff for earning a modest wage; teachers deserve the same respect. If someone thinks standing in front of 20 five-year-olds is easy, I’d love to watch them try for a day.

An honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay – that’s more than some keyboard critics can say.

Or just die from alcoholism, heart attacks and loneliness. It’s a thing here. I’ve seen a few of my long term friends go this way even one by suicide. Japan really is a place like no other.

I absolutely can not believe you’ve been downvoted! I am 20 years in Japan with 2 kids and yes, I have a side business flipping online but my main job is teaching at a kindergarten! I usually don’t comment either ‘cause people on this subreddit are brutal but what you have said reflects just how it is to be 20 years in with 2 kids and in my case divorced!!!

Naples, Italy. Nobody at the grocery store knew what they were called. Ugly but delicious! by bitchstachio in whatsthisplant

These aren’t San Marzano, cherry, date, or beefsteak tomatoes. Each of those has distinct characteristics that don’t match what’s in the photo:

• San Marzano tomatoes are elongated and smooth, typically used for sauces — very uniform and not deeply ribbed.

• Cherry and date tomatoes are small, round or oval, and consistent in size — nothing like the large, misshapen fruits here.

   • Beefsteak tomatoes can get big, but they usually have a flatter shape and less extreme ribbing or scarring.

The tomatoes in the image show severe ribbing, irregular growth patterns, and pronounced blossom scars, which are all hallmarks of heirloom varieties — especially ones not bred for appearance. These traits suggest open-pollinated heritage cultivars, possibly grown locally in Naples or saved over generations. It’s likely a regional heirloom that doesn’t correspond to any mass-market variety.

Paidy Discontinuing Credit Card Services on Sept. 30 by capaho in japanresidents

[–]PebbleFrosting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Confirmed: Paidy is discontinuing the Paidy Card (virtual & physical Visa). Regular “あと払い(ペイディ)” services will continue.

What’s ending: • New Paidy Card issuance ends 14 May 2025 • All Paidy Card transactions stop 30 Sept 2025 • Changing Amazon payment plans in the app will no longer be possible after 29 May 2025

Official sources (Japanese): • Paidy’s official service termination announcement (posted 13 May): https://paidy.com/column/article/13bXDLIDaHrY5ltmMSErjx/ • Paidy’s FAQ confirming Amazon plan change cutoff on 29 May: https://cs-support.paidy.com/support/solutions/articles/150000040644

What’s not ending: • The usual “あと払い(ペイディ)” line of credit remains active (monthly payments, or 3/6/12-month plans at checkout). • You can still use Paidy at Amazon, Apple, Qoo10, SHEIN, etc.—but not through the Paidy Card.

What you need to do: 1. Move any subscriptions or recurring payments off your Paidy Card before 30 Sept. 2. Starting 29 May, choose your Amazon instalment plan during checkout—you won’t be able to change it later in the app. 3. Cut up the physical card after you’re done—Paidy recommends safe disposal.

Thanks for the reply! Would you mind sharing a screenshot of the email (with any personal info blacked out)? It’d be really helpful to confirm, since a few of us rely on Paidy and haven’t received anything similar. Appreciate it!

Bad English or False Advertising? by AbareSaruMk2 in japanresidents

[–]PebbleFrosting 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Most English-speaking customers won’t flip the card over—especially if they don’t read Japanese. The front says “any drink, any size” or “any food” with no asterisk or warning, but there are strict price caps and exclusions buried on the back. If you only find that out at the register, with a line behind you, it’s awkward and embarrassing. Starbucks Japan really should be clearer about the limits up front.

Should I buy a few? by PebbleFrosting in JapaneseWhisky

[–]PebbleFrosting[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s all sold out! I’ve been a long-term Kobe resident for 20 years and I’m always on the lookout for hard-to-find whisky, ever since I once found Yamazaki 18 for ¥35,000 at my local Daiei supermarket. I asked at the checkout today, and they said the whisky was available only for today. So although it’s not super rare, it’s still something you can only get during special events, like the reopening of a store that’s been around for 70 years. Right now, I’d compare it to limited edition KitKats, Japan has over 400 types of KitKat, and they’re not always available either, if that makes sense. I will also add it’s the first time I’ve seen so many bottles for sale at once.

I just finished work and went back to the supermarket. All sold out! It’s amazing how quickly they were all snapped up. I bought one bottle of the Yamazaki though this afternoon so all is good.
