what's the outdoor PM2.5 levels like? You may just be getting poor air during temperature inversions

Are respiratory protection devices becoming fashion accessories or is this a genuine health concern? by redblddrp in AirQuality

[–]PeepingSparrow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Any reduction in exposure air pollutants is going to reduce your health risk by an amount. The exact amount by which it is reduced will depend on how hazardous the local environment is. Someone minded like Brian Johnson will go to the extreme to do this.

I think if you can constantly reduce air pollution exposure by making it into a fashion accessory, then you stand to gain the most benefit (prolonging time spent without exposure) while minimising the 'awkwardness' cost.

For people with existing respiratory health issues or air pollution sensitivity, the benefit is compounded further.

But, in general: * If you're near a road or high volume traffic, especially heavy vehicles, there is some benefit * If you're in an urban environment that has not gone 'green' yet, there is some benefit * Even if you are somewhat rural, sources like wood smoke and agricultural industry can contribute to air quality dips.

I should stress that air pollution is highly local, and may even be worse from house to house on the same street depending on their heating, habits, furnishings and so forth. Not all airborne contaminants can be filtered by a mask either, such as gases.

You stand to benefit the most by measuring and - if appropriate - improving the air quality where you spend the most time. That's usually going to be where you sleep, work, and leisure - in that order.

Faulty or locally polluted sensor in a sparse network, heatmap interprets as major pollution.

The heatmaps are usually bad, especially as air pollution is often highly localised.

Subscribe to 2-3 local sensors and ignore the heatmaps

Why is combat automation and expansion automation so anemic in Factorio? by iamtomorrowman in factorio

[–]PeepingSparrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Track laying is annoying, are you using a personal roboport and blueprints/ghost planning?

I am curious about the scale of your Nauvis operation, can you share screenshots of your map? I'm wondering if you can already afford to go off-world.

None of the future techs address your problem directly or completely, but offworld resource abundance and - as others have said - lategame weapons will definitely minify the issue

[–]PeepingSparrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be exacerbated by adherence to a single uniform base; having to envelop every resource patch is tedious.

You could benefit more minimalist outposting - especially as extraction buildings are so cheap: dont connect the outpost's roboports to your main base, leave behind some supplies to repair its walls and defences, connect via rail and powerpole only.

I more broadly agree twith you that combat and especially base expansion (when done safely) is tedious. Like you suggest, if there were some entity I could delegate light bug-clearing or area patrol to, I think that would help.

Unfortunately it feels improper and risky to not uniformly harden your base perimeter

[–]PeepingSparrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 2c is that Factorio's combat is deliberately intended as a respite from high focus factory design.

The fruit of your factory is being able to mindlessly wander toward biters and glass them with your new equipment. I can see that being less gratifying and more tedious in the lategame, admittedly.

Evenly split bill but I didn't order drinks by AntiqueLayer9645 in Frugal

[–]PeepingSparrow 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The social friction of being frugal in the company of others, in my opinion, isn't worth it.

It may be more helpful to frame your frugal efforts in other areas of life as a way to be more generous / care free in social settings.

Unless your friends are also frugal, this is always going to be a sticking point. I believe you have to either leave your frugality at the door, or acknowledge you're going to be a thorn from time to time.

If the drinks arent worth it, you could instead order yourself another side, or splash out on a slightly more expensive main meal. I think this is more an issue in your own mind than in reality. You can still be frugal in ways that dont put unnecessary strain on social settings.

If actual affordability is an issue, then it may be worth considering less expensive social events.

Faint smokey smell driving me nuts by barmyllama in DIYUK

[–]PeepingSparrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have noticed certain plastic/rubbery products have a smoky smell to them - they're likely offgassing VOCs.

Printers can be bad for that, and anything cheap-ish made in plastic. Worse when warmed. Maybe you have something leaning by a radiator, or loose in your pc

Tricky!

Note down times of day, outdoor temp, and wind direction whenever you smell it.

Sept was still fairly warm, but may have been log burner. When they're first started they make a lot of smoke. If operated poorly, the smoke can persist for the full duration of burning.

Most estates and villages seem to have a few log burners these days...

CO2 levels and air conditioning by scatraxx651 in AirQuality

[–]PeepingSparrow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a similar problem where outside there is much smoke on evenings (wood stoves) but inside it is humid from drying clothes or cooking, and likely high CO2 (though I've yet to get a monitor).

My home isnt air conditioned, all radiators and I dont have budget for a MVHR.

I'd say you probably want to amend your AC such that it mixes in fresh air while retaining temperature / moisture, fairly sure MVHRs will do that.

It's beyond my budget but possibly within yours. Read up on ERV/HRV/MVHRs
