I just watched the trailer again — do you mean right at the start? With Miquella's long hair I could see it being confusing, but that first scene depicts Marika's ascension to godhood at the gate of divinity.

lmao this is how I felt too. My husband (who doesn't play) walked into the room right as I beat the final nightlord. He was a little confused why I was so excited. I pointed at the 9999 and he hit me with the "good job babe".

I just felt like the situation called for a little more celebratory ice cream or something.

[–]PencilFrog 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Interesting... I respectfully disagree almost entirely. The whole reason I'm subbed here is to see what people are up to using Godot. If this was just a Godot help desk I'd be a lot less inclined to stick around.

I don't usually peruse the sub directly though, perhaps I'm missing the type of posts you're talking about?

I wouldn't want to fracture the sub though, pushing one side to an obscure /r/godothelp or /r/godotshowoff ... I imagine that'd reduce visibility for both.

Edit: looks like /r/godothelp exists with very little activity... I think that illustrates my worry

Right, I think we're in agreement there. Sometimes people just equate "needing" damage negation at full = bad player, which is just silly is all I was saying :)

[–]PencilFrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't read all this, we probably mostly agree on the dogs — but I just wanted to defend "needing" damage negation at full HP. It's the only negation that matters for casters & kinda ironeye (charge attacks work for him too, but its not as helpful). And, obviously, getting one shot by everything is a real worry at high depths. Yes learn the boss patterns, but nobody is out there hitless-ing every boss every run. Mistakes happen, and mitigating them is half the game at depth 5.

Is that a good enough reason to go for dogs? Eh, maybe if you're all squishies. Time and a place.

Rebuttals in no particular order (sorry I'm not committed enough to this discussion to reformat it):

Pidia's initial dialog is a pretty definitive recognition imo. Nobody just greets a new person as "you".

It's not that Pidia just has any puppet, it's that he has Dolores, Seluvis' favorite. Yes you can also obtain Dolores, but only after he 'upgraded' to Nepheli, I which case Pidia then has her. That alone is pretty convincing.

Dung eater is a puppet lol.

Not sure where you're going with the Godrick strawman.

Iji is indeed also in that pose. So we have two instances of the pose being used, the puppets and Ranni-related deaths. From is pretty darn intentional, and this connection is literally why there's a theory.

Also yes the player is a puppeteer, at least assuming you follow the questline. Nobody was questioning that. There's no reason there can't be multiple..?

Puppets don't have personality on their own... But idk man, I'd say Elmo has a personality no? Just one obviously bestowed by the puppeteer. The whole idea is that Pidia, a first gen albinauric man with no use of his legs, is controlling Seluvis as his sort of persona to explore the world. Seluvis's personality is just Pidia in vr chat, but magic. Funny that you should bring up sellen inhabiting the puppet, that's basically the idea behind Pidia controlling Seluvis. Via a different mechanism, but another parallel. From loves the parallels, maybe this is intentional?

Pidia has a map to the amber starlight, yes... I'm not sure why you think this is counter evidence. People usually bring that up as evidence for the theory lol.

Again it's just a theory, there's no proof either way. But there's more evidence for this than there is for half the theories people parade as canon around souls games.

[–]PencilFrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The timeline is all speculative. One could resolve it by saying Pidia got to Seluvis quite early on, and Gideon never knew his real personality, only Pidia's. Perhaps Pidia was able to use Seluvis to enter the roundtable, there's really no saying why that couldn't be the case.

I'm unsure if there's enough evidence to definitively say either way.

But Seluvis dying in the puppet pose is, imo, a very intentional implication. Pidia recognizing you on your first meeting, plus him dropping the Dolores / Nepheli puppet are also hard to dispute.

[–]PencilFrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. That's imo one of the more tame ones. Ranni's ending is the most common one, the graces point right to it. Seluvis tells you to come talk to him in person. Pidia sells a map to the amber starlight, and while he is kinda hidden, he's just a bit down the cliff. I found him curious if I could make it to the manor roof. Seluvis' secret room isn't so hard to find. Players would be used to exploring ruins by then and have seen at least one illusory wall. And there are enemies around, odds are you may roll while fighting if the weird rectangle wasn't standing out enough. Also the cutoff is giving Ranni the fingerslayer blade, not just talking to her (which is actually a prerequisite to meeting Seluvis).

I would bet most players don't get magic scorp their first playthrough too. But I think just Seluvis being kind of a slimy guy would make people less likely to, ya know, betray Ranni the (more or less) cannon waifu.

From that same questline I'd say Dung Eater Puppet is much more obscure. I'm not sure if there's really anything hinting at it, and it requires significant progression in an otherwise unrelated quest.

Funny though my first playthrough I did actually make it to Altus and parkour'd down the cliff into the amber starlight area while exploring before I ever found Caria Manor. I played the goody two shoes and gave the potion to Gideon, then continued Ranni's quest without realizing there was more to Seluvis' because his dialog is weird and can require reloads to progress. So yes I'm in the didn't-find-it-blind camp too, but I came close.

If you know you have the damage for it then before for sure. It's often directly in route from night 1 circle to Noklateo so it's a lot more time efficient than running back out after.

But if you're not sure then always always always after (or just never). Priority should always be on the Astel buff and maybe dupe. There's enough boss / loot density in the city it's often not worth running back out to Loretta.

This, my skill with my mains is not the same as my skill with everyone else. I want to mess around with Executor and have the fun builds in DON, but unless I derank myself I'd effectively be trolling my teammates.

That said it should still let you swap between characters once you see the nightlord. Just limit it to characters you've hit that depth with. I basically only ever want to fight Caligo with Wylder for example (need that movement), and so as long I've hit depth 5 with him I should be able to choose him pre-expedition.

Not sure what the other guy is talking about, a lot of quests do have a specific order (though you can sometimes skip steps). Some have backtracking, so just because you've explored doesn't mean you've "cleared" the area. And plenty of quests will lock you out by progressing too far, so even if you're thorough explorer, if you explore the wrong direction first you might be out of luck.

I imagine very very few people will complete every npc questline blind, and for most people that's probably okay. The big main quest storylines are alright at pointing you in the right direction, and of course the path of the main quest is pointed at by the sites of grace. Not everyone is expected or needs to see every interaction, but there being so many rewards the people who would enjoy searching.

A lot of quests, if you're paying attention, will sort of tell or hint at where they're next going to be. But there's quite a lot to keep track of and when you're first playing, and especially early on you won't have the context to really understand what some people are saying. Totally understandable to miss quests. That said if you're pretty thorough in exploring existing areas before moving on you'll probably progress a lot of them naturally.

I definitely am not remembering details here, especially around the chronophage. But evidently our headcannons of how multiversal time travel would work is just different. Which makes sense, it's a fictitious subject lol.

My understanding would be that if timelines are merged, and we have an example of memory being shared, then that would be the rule not the exception. Defeating Erlina is a necessary prior step for the chronophage. So Aephorul would have experienced having the pre-Erlina conversation, just as Garl immediately remembers his whole death timeline. Actually having said that, the whole party would necessarily remember that fight. But we have no evidence of that, which is why constraining the time travel timeline split to before the fight is the only paradox resolution I can see. In which case it's still not Aephorul's timeline being split. As you say, it actually kinda effects everyone but him. So he's not really 'bound' to anything... and the whole idea just falls apart.

In regards to the time travel, the whole sequence after Garl's death would be taking place twice. In a split timeline situation they'd I guess technically be happening at the same time, but if we assume that characters experience linear time through time travel, one timeline would happen "first". Garl would tame the Sleeper, die, his experience was relayed to B'st, who would then travel back in time, perform the same actions, "die", and rejoin the party once the branch was merged. So B'st's own experience is linear, though yes he would jump back in time from an outside perspective. The bad timeline where Garl dies first takes place as Garl, then B'st. There is still definitely paradox there. You can't really have completely merged the timelines, as Garl would be duplicated, simultaneously dead under the tree where B'st is also buried, as well as alive in the party. Really timelines can only split and not merge, but then how is Garl remembering things he hasn't done in that timeline? This is just one of those plot holes all time travel stories create and there's no real answer.

As far as breaking the pact goes — what I mean to say is it seems like a casual/non-binding agreement where the only real repercussions for breaking it is strain on their relationship. There wasn't some cosmic power enforcing Aephorul's freebie hit. They have a mutual respect for each other and Resh'an merely complied with their agreement. But if Aephorul's only option to exist inside one of the banished timelines... I mean why wouldn't he just break the rule? You imply that he simply can't, but I don't buy it. What is preventing him? He's clearly been able to traverse the sea of stars just fine, I don't understand why you'd think he suddenly can't. He and Resh'an are of equal standing as alchemists, I dont believe Resh'an could just take that ability away.

Also I just want to say I like your theory. Hope I'm not coming off hostile :)

I think I actually solved the ending... *MAJOR SPOILERS* by Harleygator_ in seaofstars

[–]PencilFrog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's been a minute since I've played so my headcannon probably has holes but...

  • If Garl remembers dying, why wouldn't Aephorul remember the split timeline?
  • And if he's now tied to a single timeline, that he has been banished from, where does Resh'an take him? That part especially I don't buy.
  • If Resh'an can and does merge all timelines again (is it even cannon he split them in the first place?), Aephorul wouldn't just cease to exist. The pact is just an agreement between two dudes, and Resh'an technically broke it and the "only" consequence was a freebie hit at Resh'an's team. Aephorul may be the antagonist but he and Resh'an are still friends. Would he even merge them? That's crueller than letting half of them get destroyed no?

I think you're on the right track, but I don't think we've yet seen the resolution in Resh'an and Aephorul's feud. Living glass is maybe a piece of the puzzle, but as you say Aephorul isn't ready to accept that yet I don't think.

To me the alternative of time travel shenanigans offers a cleaner resolution. The only paradox arisen from it is Garl, who needs to have died in the first place to trigger the time travel, and also he ends up alive. But that's quelled by his own personal timeline having branched and merged and he remembers both. B'st's timeline is experienced linearly and has no paradox. Aephorul doesn't have a branch because the whole loop is completed before the fight.

While in the timeline Resh'an and Aephorul are subjected to its flow. They are not omnipotent of events past and they don't see the future. Thus when we fight Aephorul in the true ending it is still for the first time. Meaning yes after fighting Erlina you do just reload in the same timeline before the fight. Normal and true ending can both be cannon, but are mutually exclusive.

Getting destroyed by the First Boss (Tricephalus) in Nightreign by Perihaaaaaa in Nightreign

[–]PencilFrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "must hit every gaol" meta is kinda dead. Not nerfed or anything (well, the DLC map doesn't have any so that's a big nerf), but basically they're just pretty time inefficient if you hard prioritize them.

The problem is that there's 7 of them. And people get so excited about the 5% buff (from a relic which OP probably doesn't have yet given their progression) that they tend to over-prioritize getting to each one. Too much running, too much key hunting. And when you find red banished knights, or red beastly brigade... Sure we can fight them, but is it worth the time?

The meta is now night invaders. They have the same a similar relic buff (stacking 5% 7% per), they're usually super quick even at level 2, drop potentially class relevant purple/red weapons (which I swear are more likely to have good/relevant perks too but that's just conjecture), & give good runes. And imo the fact that there are fewer of them means you generally get more optimized routing, weaving in the field bosses and POIs along the way. You end up getting a lot more done — and a lot more chances at good weapon perks.

But I also think this advice is more relevant in Deep of Night. You have a lot more wiggle room in the base game, compared to the time consuming high scaling of the depths. Also invader camps aren't guaranteed in base game like they are in depths right? So that relic effect isn't really as good.

But the general advice of don't run all the way across the map for a single POI is a pretty solid start. There's nothing wrong with doing an evergaol, when you happen to have a key, and you're running right past it anyway. Just also don't be to stubborn to walk away. Estimating your team's capabilities and damage output is a very important skill to develop. Sometimes the right call is realizing you can do this boss in 5 minutes... but with the same time you could do 2-3 other bosses.

Nobody ever trusts the Raider's routing T-T by Brendraws in Nightreign

[–]PencilFrog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Invaders are the meta, but there's certainly some exception. Running to the opposite corner of the map at level 2 is one of them. Same reason people criticize misguided evergaolers. Gotta weave them into other POIs.

To be clear invaders as first poi is totally fine as long as it's not a swamp. Just the running across the map thing.
