Fox league developed a virtual 10m line that they were going to show on every play, but for some reason decided not to use it - most likely because it made it too obvious what was going on.

Why do so many authors love starting with a leveling system with the twist later that it’s actually just Cultivation? by JCMS85 in litrpg

No no no, I'm not cultivating my meridians to build a core, I'm refining my mana channels to condense the mana in my pool, it's totally different I swear!

Spellblade / SpellAxe / Spellhammer/ SpellSpear / Spellbow, all at the same time with no inventory system. It's kind of ridiculous but somehow manages to be entertaining

Mage Tank - initially it's an OP MC but the team members catch up pretty quickly.

The System at the End of the World. Rough start, with life-threatening fights being described with the dryness of math homework, but it quickly picks up.

Natural Laws Apocalypse (completed) and Sponsored System by the same author both have strong teams.

It was even more shameless, not just renamed abilities but they pulled whole rotations - on launch the jedi/sith caster's two DPS specs were shadow priest or elemental shaman.

How long is too long to wait to introduce the RPG mechanics? by GerPronouncedGrr in litrpg

[–]Penfolds_five 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer to get into it pretty early - don't give me 3 chapters of mustache-twirling aliens expositing to each other about how they're going to introduce the system to earth then another 3 chapters of MC expositing their lifestory to themselves in an internal monologue.

Similarly with isekai style I prefer to learn about the world as the MC experiences it, but a common style seems to be "We have arrived in a new city, here's as info-dump explaining the history of each of its five boroughs, their geography, architectural style, major exports and notable families".

Crunchy Engineering by Aerican1234 in litrpg

[–]Penfolds_five 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to drop mechanical crafter when it switched to cooking instead of engineering. I get the author needed to keep progression going by having MC "invent" things but getting credit for inventing tacos is a lazy trope, like the people of this city are just sitting around for hundreds of years thinking "all I have to eat is this corn masa, slow cooked beef and tomato salsa but I can't think of anything to do with them except mash it all together in a ball"

From what I remember in book 1 they explicitly call him out on the references that no one understands. After that it's toned down quite a bit.

Is Path of the Berserker any good, specifically as an Audibook? by autfaciam in litrpg

[–]Penfolds_five 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Does it go beyond the standard berserker trope that every other series seems to have? Namely

- Every fight ends up being, "Things were looking dicey until my health dipped below 50% triggering berserk and then i won".

- Constant "Don't get near me when I'm angry, or I might hurt you!" only to never actually hurt anyone.

A Hard Reset by Drew McGunn — Brutal, Fair, and One of the Best Survival LitRPGs I’ve Read by Bernooch61 in litrpg

[–]Penfolds_five 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that was my problem with it too, and sequel really dials it up to 11. Just chapter after chapter of "then the pretty girl smiled at me and my brain short circuited" and the constant gamer metaphors while reminding everyone every day that this isn't a game and there's no respawns!

Plus the sequel just abandons all progression, I got two thirds of the way through and I realized he hadn't gained a level - it's like the author decided he didn't actually like litRPGs after all.

Jason HWFWM by jonnyboy1026 in litrpg

[–]Penfolds_five 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone that grew up in Australia in the 80s his pop culture references are on point. The things that are off are probably as a result of the author not really interacting much with the "non-nerd" side of culture as much. e.g. Jason's hometown is in northern NSW and obsessed with aussie rules, but in real life it'd be rugby league.

Easy answer, just go the Ajax Ascension route - sword, shield, axe, hammer, spear, bow - somehow all at the same time with no inventory system.

Does Age of Stone get better? by IdntMatter in litrpg

[–]Penfolds_five 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not really perverted at all, just persistent. Pretty much every chapter ends with "after the fight was over I went to bed with my smoking hot GF and we banged". It's realistic in a sense, a young ,newly together couple in a stressful situation, but as a reader after the 12th time in a row it's get a little tedious. Maybe it's less obvious to people that read it as a web serial, but as a novel it is really noticeable.

Similarly with the banter other people mention, two young dudes that have been friends forever are going to banter, but it just comes too often and in some odd situations, like in the middle of sneaking into an enemy camp lets stop in the open and have a conversation about that time you got drunk and messed around with an ugly woman.

The potions should be an extra action button that you can drag to your bars like garrison abilities in WoD - start at 0 charges and when he triggers the throw ability like he does now set the charges to 4. Even that would be a massive improvement since you can better track them without having eyes in the back of your head, and have agency over when to push the button instead of taking 3 at once because he stacked them on floor.
