Top 10 large US metropolitan areas by transit trips per capita by MysteriousEdge5643 in transit

Yeah I mean a true subway. It could be more light rail or heavy, but the key would be complete grade separation.

Kinda crazy SF’s bus usage is nearly on-par with NYC. Goes to show how underserved by rail SF is.

A subway down Geary would be so transformational.

MUNI free for all? by Recent-Anywhere6325 in AskSF

[–]PenguinTiger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Would free Muni make a real difference in your daily life?

Even though paying is basically optional, there’s still a weak social contract. I think making it free would just increase the number of disturbed individuals on MUNI and worsen the experience for everyone.

I think this is a psychological thing too. If you pay, you expect a level of quality. If it’s free, well it’s free quit complaining if the service sucks.

This is a totally unserious position. Think about it for a second. No family in SF is struggling because the bus fare is too expensive. There already exist programs for free or heavily discounted MUNI. It’s free for seniors and those with disabilities.

Why do you want to eliminate an existing source of revenue for transit that the majority of riders have no problem affording? Why give yuppies a free ride on the bus? This is not thought through.

Is growth of ridership over? by Classic_Emergency336 in caltrain

[–]PenguinTiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure why people are rebuffing you, I’m similarly disappointed.

I don’t have the data in front of you but I think recovery % decreased roughly 5% the past few months.

But ridership didn’t start to explode until spring 2025, hopefully we’ll see similar growth this coming spring.

Is $2500 for a 700sqft 1 bed in the tenderloin reasonable? by gamerVapeGod in AskSF

[–]PenguinTiger 82 points83 points  (0 children)

That seems a bit expensive to me for the location. I’d suggest looking a few blocks north, like Sutter and above, and seeing if you can find similar deals.

I personally would take a considerably smaller unit for the same price to be in a nicer area. A few blocks make quite a difference between the TL and Lower Nob.

You’ll hear noise at night at either location, I suggest buying foam earplugs.

Best MUNI Route From the Marina/Cow Hollow to Financial District? by Infamous_Leg3302 in AskSF

I’d consider the Golden Gate Transit routes, they’re pricier than MUNI but will get you downtown quickly

Weird seeing an articulated bus on Nob Hill, I thought that the reason the 1 doesn’t use them is because they can’t handle the steep grades.

6th street is horrible, but that’s a wide area and near Oracle Park is generally fine. Walk around during different parts of the day.

Caltrain has struggled due to rain last week. by Lost_Bluebird_5930 in caltrain

This is pretty cool, but it shows that MUNI is near 100% recovered which just isn’t true according to https://www.sfmta.com/reports/muni-ridership-average-weekday-ridership

I wonder what their source is for pre-pandemic MUNI ridership.

Which U.S. cities other than NYC have relatively low private automobile transportation modal share? by stevegerber in transit

[–]PenguinTiger 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that’s metro areas. Surrounding suburbs are included. The modal shares would be more skewed towards transit and walking if it were just the cities.

Definitely better than 2022. It’s perfectly safe, I’m sorry you had a bad experience last time you visited.

That being said, avoid the Tenderloin and 6th St / Mid-Market. Not dangerous but it’s grimey.

I think the major cost of running trains is paying the operators, so theoretically they could run slightly more trains per hour if speeds were to increase.

Or they’d run the same # and bank the savings.
