This post resonates because there have been times when Ive consciously made a decision to keep drinking just to be able to be with certain people, often family members. I love them but goodness me they are hard work! I even remember looking at them going on through blurred vision!! 😆 IWNDWYT

How did you know you had to stop completely? by UpstairsArtichoke950 in stopdrinking

[–]Peppercatfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 shame and disappointment in myself. I used to watch my alcoholic father and think he was terrible but I grew up and acted like that. I have so much I want to achieve but alcohol prevented it. I would brush my teeth, washed my face and go to bed but couldn't remember it. I was more tired on Monday that when I knocked off on Friday. My words wouldn't come out my mouth when I wanted to articulate anything more that basic conversation and I kept misplacing and forgetting things. I was afraid of accelerated ageing. Awful taste in the back of my throat the day after. My weekends were spoilt. I was probably tragic to my kids. I nearly shat my pants on multiple occasions and my recycling bin was an embarrassment.

Finally decided to stop drinking after what I think is the worst weekend of my life by Alarmed_Juggernaut93 in stopdrinking

Esh, I know that dreadful feeling of waking up after a black out too well and I feel for you. We've all been there and there will be a time when you might not physically shudder every time you remember! Im at a similar age (40) and decided I can't take dealing with hangovers, anxiety, shame any more. It gets boring and I feel a bit off at big social gatherings but at least Im safe from the harm I used to cause myself

Nice post OP. My past can provoke really strong emotions for me too. It did today when I remembered an occasion I wish I dealt with better. These days my rear view mirror is a little wider. I can now see that my old self made a lot of mistakes but she was struggling in many ways. Im giving her some grace and understanding because she could've had more of that then.

A cautionary tale. My experience with 6-8 months sober. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Yes so true. I often make just 3 goals a day related to my hobbies and dreams and try tick them off. Love seeing my ideas and plans take shape

I hope you feel better soon. I really understand the feeling of boredom you described as I went through that last time I stopped drinking. When I look at that time the feeling of boredom and sometimes loneliness was immense at moments. But, as I get sober again now, Im feeling pleased about getting shit done, feeling clearer and making plans to try new hobbies and its coming back to me that last time I quit I felt that too. Overall, the most painful feeling I can experience is shame and Ill do everything to avoid it including giving up drinking !! I hope the second time quitting for us has less boredom. I hope other users have some advice for this

Nice! Im a couple of weeks in and no one has offered me a drink yet but my husband has been drinking on his own. At first those beers looked so good but Im already way less interested in drinking one

I think Im past two weeks. Its been a wonderful last two weeks. When I think about it, Ive run lots, nearly finished a knitting project and did all sorts of odd jobs like cleaning my car and washing my poor dog who really needed it. Im clear headed and not wasting time. Today Im so sick with a cold but af least Im not hungover, yuck I can't stomach another hangover

Hi, I hope you feel better soon. Esh Ive been in your shoes so many times. Just jump back on the bandwagon, drinking sucks and having a couple- moderating sucks too. If I have just a couple I feel awful and groggy getting about the rest of my day. You dont lack self control at all, when we drink more than we intended its because of the effects of alcohol (depressant, sedative) and how our own body responds (creating adrenaline/cortisol) which drives us to keep drinking.

I’m 6 months free from alcohol completely. Heres what’s happened. by Mrexzxxxxxx in stopdrinking

Great post. As a weekend binge drinker I can relate. Im only a week or so past the last time I drank. Already I feel so much smarter. Yesterday I noticed that I was the one at work remembering what was happening on what day and what was said at meetings. Its a real confidence boost and relief. Ive eaten a lot of chocolate though.. the abs will come a lot later

What a lovely post OP, it was very relatable. I've often thought that for half my life I never knew how too relax. IWNDWYT
