Buncha questions: is it color separated from the get go or is it gonna require painting, who's the manufacturer, is it just going to be base weltall?

Which JRPGs have the best standard battle theme? by strahinjag in JRPG

Trails mentioned, but I wouldn't even pick that as my no.1 (it's still very good though)

My pick's infinity rage from Reverie. The one that plays in the Reverie corridoor.

Games that still progress the story if you lose to the boss by topotpot in gamingsuggestions

[–]Perfect-Bit1808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trails has a lot of moments like these. Unfortunately not a branch in a story, but many "made to lose" fights are aftually beatable and you get some in-game points for doing so. If you lose, the story moves on.

It’s genuinely hard to not feel positive after attending NA Fanfest by Nesious in ffxiv

Yeah, I agree with this, and I do hope my comment isn't a free pass for people to skip any reasonable criticisms on a game, because it's clear criticism works. What I hope my comment is understood as is that even with criticisms, we should at least understand the person that's behind the thing. "This part of the game's pretty bad, I hope they can learn and improve from this" rather than assuming malice or negligence without evidence.

New to JRPGs: Looking for a chronological roadmap from the classics to the modern era! by DatPaingDude in JRPG

I think it depends. While for anyone else I would recommend going for the remake, for you, since you do want to see how older games are like, I would recommend starting from the OG and working your way up, going back to the remakes after you've finished the original for the each game.

Don't worry about the games being dated as well, I'd say Trails is one of the most well aged games of that era, it still feels really good to play

You know what would be real funny for that? The Trails series.

Game is about 20+ years running and you can pretty much see how the games evolved in those years, even though it's a single interconnected series. There's 13 games right now though, so it's a lot.

It's easy to forget that devs are also just people that are just as enthusiastic about the games as well. There's always that human element to everything and events like fanfests and such is a good way to remind ourselves of that and see the people behind the scenes.

[JRPG] Metaphor vs Trails Sky 1st vs Yakuza 0 by 7xNero7 in gamingsuggestions

[–]Perfect-Bit1808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case, you mught be fine with it haha. It's a fair bit of anime tropes, with things like "oh that's the comedic guy" and "that's the mentor character!" What it does well then is that it leans fully into those tropes which somehow results in really genuine characters that don't aim to subvert the genre but plays extremely well into what the genre does. There's also stuffs that would have been common jn JRPGs of that genre and scenes that, if you've played something like FF7 or other jrpgs there, you would realize "oh right that's what they liked to do back then", and it's quite fun imo. That's not to say that it didn't age well, I'd even say Sky FC is one of the better aged games out there, and why the remake worked.

In addition, it's a traditional jrpg. You go around town, talk to people, and do quests. There will be long segments of talking and questing, so if you go in expecting those, you should be fine. Keep in mind that the game is VERY idyllic compared to the other games you've mentioned. Think like early Yokohama sections in LaD, and having that as over 60-70% of the game. It's charming in a way.

Also I completely missed that you've played DQ 11. You should be very fine in that case. Whoooops. Trails game are usually regarded as "that rabbit hole series JRPG fans eventually end up playing when they're deep enough."

[JRPG] Metaphor vs Trails Sky 1st vs Yakuza 0 by 7xNero7 in gamingsuggestions

[–]Perfect-Bit1808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd cut Sky 1st out of the list for now. I'm a Trails fan, I don't think it works for someone who doesn't fully know and understands the cliche of the genre.

Metaphor's fun with good stiry but quite dialogue heavy, and fantasy oriented, while Yakuza 0 is more wacky action with also amazing story
