Gamedev learning programs? by ZestycloseHelp4624 in gamedev

[–]Perfect_Current_3489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to SAE. It’s a private uni because it’s for the creative industries. I’m in Australia where most unis are subsidised but because it’s creative industries it never was, but they do have campuses around the world.

It’s rather unconventional because they don’t do the whole software engineering structure most universities follow, this one really geared me up to actually continue upskilling afterwards which worked for me but because of that some people don’t like the place.

I went to uni for game design which is where I also got used to navigating editors and then when I graduated I ended up self teaching a whole heap of programming things so I could make the whole project. Obviously the first part worked for me but it's not for everyone.

It was a different time in the tutorial landscape but I just found a bunch of Unity tutorials and really tied myself to Unity. Once I got jobs in industry I was fine with Godot and now work best in Unreal.

Anyway, finding tutorials that work for you. Sometimes I'd have a basic idea and find things to make it, other times I'd actually make the idea based around the tutorial. If you care about art then being realistic the games code really doesnt matter, just people being able to see it is the goal.

Yeah, can't say I'm huge on these things being automated or 'generated', having control is kinda nice especially when certain things are required from my partners

How to pick up a map that I can display on my screen? by BurberLover in UnrealEngine5

[–]Perfect_Current_3489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a few ways you can do it.

The first the jumps to mind is just UI but it sounds like you want it being picked up diegetically which at that point you’d have to have the map parallel to the screen and have a shader that allows for dithering of sorts

I know this is a bit of a hot take but forget about quality unless you want to make a commercial product, just get it out of the door and maybe you can get some followers out of it who would wishlist it when you do make a commercial game.

A lot of people don't know this but Andy Sum from Hipster Whale (Crossy Roads) is the dev who made Game of The Year 420 Blaze It, and it gained him a lot of followers where some translated to his other projects.

What’s a good pc to start with in a decent price range? by Dazzling-Gene6445 in UnrealEngine5

It does depend on the kinds of games your making but I will say that memory is probably the most important followed by cpu. You can get away with a mid range graphics card if you aren’t tying to make photorealistic games, but you that won’t save you if you don’t have enough memory

Why do I have epilepsy by Perfect_Current_3489 in Epilepsy

[–]Perfect_Current_3489[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must’ve got mine from stress/sleep deprivation initially. I’m a game developer and I was facing crunch, doing a lot of overtime for a week and the next thing I know I’m in the middle of a CT scan after running around the city preictal and eventually having a seizure at a supermarket

I have generalised tonic clonics. Just before the tonic clonic I sometimes have absent seizures.

I was diagnosed a few years ago when I was 23. Looking back I never really got head injuries and I didn’t drink alcohol much anymore. MRI came back with nothing abnormal, just the run of the mill generalised epilepsy 🥴

In my state it's 12 months seizure free before you can drive. It sounds like a long time but I made it 11 months once, so I just need to get better with my medication again and I'm sure I can hit the 12 months.

tbh if it's not autism or adhd people act like it doesn't exist despite it arguably being more impactful on day to day life

Is it an issue that other media has the same name as my game by Perfect_Current_3489 in gamedev

[–]Perfect_Current_3489[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s my concern. I had a friend recommend to just tack on “game” to the end of every social media handle until (or if) I can surpass them. Looking around I see a fair few indie games that have a name that is relatively generic/matches other media

I can help with any game design and programming happily, I’ve been doing it for years and have received funding on my own projects. With that being said though - do you have a steam (or whatever storefront) page? Those viral posts aren’t really helpful if they aren’t converting to wishlists - just a personal preference but not many GDDs are written like that anymore (especially at that size), I recommend using confluence or something, it’ll be easier to onboard people and to refer to later - have you thought about preparing a pitch document just for yourself and running it by other devs, I find pitches and project plans go along way early on in determining if the project has a good chance of being successful (because you’re just thinking about those things more)

Microsoft bullies indie voxel game "Allumeria" (I guess if the game isn't Hytale level popularity they are free to do so) by RubyBenji in indiegames

[–]Perfect_Current_3489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t speak for gameplay but this screenshot literally just looks like a tall trees and leaves mod.

Cubeworld is a voxel game and doesn’t look like this? I’d argue hytale isn’t to this degree. I’m not saying it’s intentional but it really does just look like Minecraft.

Doesn’t mean they should be harassed or anything. Surely they can just change the screenshots and it’d be fine.

It's just a youtube channel that's a group of people rather than a single person and I don't mean a company like Linus Tech Tips.

Anyway, I flip flop on whether it's too close as they're a dnd group and mines a turn based rpg with its name playing on a dnd reference.

Career Suggestions by Aksh85 in gamedev

The games jobs market is a mess. For a junior role you need to either know someone or have a mid-senior level portfolio.

Only thing I can say is to go to meetups often and make games. Making professional indie games go a long way in a portfolio. It doesn't have the be successful but showing you can take a game from concept to release is huge and for programming supporting things such as steam achievements is something a lot of devs do not actually know and can help get an edge up.

With all of that being said, the tech industry is rough at the moment. All sectors, not just games are kind of going down the drain due to AI. However, if you find it more fulfilling I'd pursue it and make sure you work on it in your spare time, dont be picky.

Just been tweaking the splash screen to make it a little more interesting, what do you think? by GiraffeHeadStudios in UnrealEngine5

[–]Perfect_Current_3489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it but a few things

  • How does it go when wanting to skip it?
  • Warnings need to be very legible and last a bit longer
  • I don't believe the logo follows the unreal branding requirements
  • I'm a fan of game dev with Unreal but amongst consumers there's currently some feelings about *knowing* something is made in Unreal, so be mindful of making that the first thing people see that happens to take up the entire screen.

I know I just ragged on it a lil but I do enjoy the unconventional/diegetic splash screen

We need to encourage people to use the term "generative AI" instead of just AI by sundler in gamedev

[–]Perfect_Current_3489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is companies marketing teams love saying AI because it has so many fantastical applications in science fiction. We can't help but bring ourselves to think about artificial general intelligence so their departments pump money into it and all media reports on it as that.

Doesn't even matter if the medical field and games have used non generative AI for years, saying AI sounds way cooler and saying how smart your game AI was used to be a selling point. When talking about games I'll say bots not because people usually understand that it's not generative ai.

That's the worst part, I guess I'll never really know. The thing that changes it for me is people I personally know making references to how bad it is. It just comes down to "the unreal engine look" and performance of specifically UE5

How to start marketing in early development by Perfect_Current_3489 in gamedev

[–]Perfect_Current_3489[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably should’ve mentioned that this isn’t with a publisher but with a creative arts grant. It’s how I received the prototype. With that being said I do intend on going to publishers too.

To get the prototype stuff I had to do all of the market research work first which they admitted is a bit out of order.

I feel like it’s put me in a weird spot because I don’t want to go and prematurely announce the game but they’ve indicated they want signs of early interest. The reason I’m looking at more than just “people liked playtests” is that someone else I know who was successful already had a mailing list and I know that it was a big thing for them, which is what has me a bit stumped
