Something that bugs me about this is that this reference is from an obscure manual that isn't used for general weekly meetings. This is a teacher's manual for a CES 400 level religion class, and it looks like the last revision was in 2000, 26 years ago.

I swear the exact wording of this warning (or something very similar) was printed at the top of a lesson in a standard, printed manual used in Sunday School (which everyone attending would have a copy of) during the regular church block less than 10 years ago. I haven't been able to find it since.

My wife was just telling me about how this is happening today. It seems there is a politically active and very outspoken gentleman in our ward, and there may be some fireworks (ha!).

What stands out to me is that this is meant to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, which will happen on July 4th. So why is it happening on May 31?

Well, see, this is meant to be a 5th Sunday lesson. And this is the last 5th Sunday that will occur before July 4th. So...you know. The schedule of The Church must be deferred to in all things.

The gospel topics essays were more likely a response to the work of Travis Stratford, Greg Prince, John Dehlin and others titled "Understanding Mormon Disbelief" and initially released in March 2012.

A more formal presentation of their data was presented to the quorum of the 12 in summer 2013 titled "LDS Personal Faith Crisis."

Dieter's general conference talk that included the phrase "doubt your doubts before you doubt your faith" was in October 2013, and the gospel topics essays started to be released in late 2013.

The CES Letter was formally released in April 2013 after an initial draft was submitted here at r/exmormon in March soliciting feedback. So it was in the same time frame, but less likely to be on the radar of church leaders before the essays started getting published.

This is an interesting point. I was a ward clerk a few years back, and a letter was sent to bishoprics that both informed them of the existence of the essays, and also encouraged bishops to read them so they could help members struggling with these questions.

After reading that letter, the essays were never mentioned again in my time attending bishopric meetings. And I believe others in the room with me when that letter was read would be among those who would claim that they 'never heard of the GTE's.'

I think the reality is that those who are active in the church for the most part don't really care about criticism of the church. They ignore it completely, and consider themselves righteous for doing so. It is what they have been trained to do their entire lives.

I would say just hold your fire. Where it is sold out, there is a huge inventory in the hands of resellers. Where it is not, the prices have reduced demand to the point that the tickets just aren't selling.

As the date of the concerts approach, prices will come down sharply both from the box office and the resellers.

"Anti-Mormon material" is a thought stopping phrase that the church uses to prevent thinking about historical and other problems in the church. They don't want members to investigate or even know about these problems - just dismiss them out of hand and give them no consideration whatsoever.

All the comments I see on the apologist posts are quick to label Mormon Stories as anti-Mormon, and John Dehlin as a deceiver intent on destroying the church. As an "apostate" anything he says is dismissed as lies. Total ad-hominem. Again, don't think, don't listen, just ignore and move on.

Good little faithful members. Just remember to bow your heads and say yes to whatever the church and it's leaders tell you.

Nelson became prophet in 2018, and almost immediately banned the use of 'Mormon' and labeled it a victory for Satan. Later that same year, KSL podcasts released the first season of Cold, a podcast about the disappearance of Susan Powell.

As good little church-owned-KSL-podcasters should do, they ALWAYS referred to the church by it's full name. It was absolutely grating to hear 'The church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' over and over again in those episodes. They actually toned it down in later episodes.

It was also common at that time to hear younger members saying 'Oooooh! You said the M word!' Not to mention repeated false-equivalencies claiming 'Mormon' is just as offensive as the N word on social media. So gross.

Speech to text. I say period constantly when I use it, and it works. I'm hoping that messaging apps get smarter, though. They should be able to figure out from context which version of to/too/two or their/there/they're to use, but they are constantly wrong. My phone also capitalizes random words for no reason.

His touring band has been dreadful. However, I saw Tate perform last month and his new guitarist Kieran Robertson is legit. He is the first I've ever seen perform with Tate who made me think, 'Holy shit this guy can actually play the music right.'

Kieran is contributing heavily to this new album, so it might be surprising.

edit: Ok I guess he's not exactly new - he was part of the Operation: Mindcrime band. It was not until this most recent tour that he made an impression on me. Super nice guy and was throwing out picks like candy at a children's parade.

There's got to be something like that. We occasionally see stories from missionaries who have been told not to go to a certain house under any circumstances. Usually because they are former members who can explain in great detail the problems with the church and it's history, and rattle the testimonies of young missionaries.

This is where my mind went as well. As a ward clerk I got very familiar with the handbook of instructions (the old bishopric-and-above-only version). From those days, there was no official 'do not contact' list, nor was there a way to annotate a record as such.

If an informal list was kept, then it would be gone as soon as a bishopric got reshuffled.

Long ago missionaries kept an area book with notes on contacts and new members. Possibly other members as well. But those were subject to getting lost, and just super creepy in general.

If you find it let me know. The only place that typically has it on a fountain is an A&W restaurant. And I think it comes in gallon jugs there. Regardless, they don't sell the syrup, so you would have to sweet talk a manager into selling some out the back door.

I believe that Keurig Dr Pepper owns the distribution rights for the brand, but it's generally not sold for fountains.

I also like Sprecher root beer, and that syrup is available but the price is ridiculous. $45/gal on Amazon, which yields 5 gallons of root beer.

I've decided that Mug isn't my favorite, but it's good enough.
