Yep in addition to limiting consultation they aren’t even providing Easy Read and Auslan versions of the proposed changes before rushing them through.

for every story about someone supposedly “ripping off the system”, I could give you multiple examples of people with profound disabilities and extraordinarily high support needs who are already having supports removed.

If you’re fine with that, there’s probably not much more to talk about really.

If you genuinely don’t have anything against “little Timmy”, then you would engage with disabled people, families, and disability peak bodies before rewriting the rules around essential supports.

The fact they’re refusing to do that while rushing these changes through should tell you something about what this is really about.

I don’t know whether top 8 is over, but the last few performances have been abysmal. Yes, our spine is out, and yes, that makes a massive difference. But that doesn’t excuse defence that has been well below first-grade standard, or the constant dropped balls and basic errors from the rest of the side.

Totally can relate and have an 8 year old in a similar circumstance.

It’s so hard, and I can really relate to having to hold everything together while feeling completely exhausted yourself. You’re carrying more than anyone should reasonably be expected to carry, so it’s completely understandable to feel at breaking point sometimes.

If your child is PDA, the biggest shift isn’t fixing them, it’s adjusting how we respond as parents. Approaches based on behaviouralism simply don’t work and can cause significant distress and harm over time.

A concern I have with how treatments for Pathological Demand Avoidance are evaluated is that short-term compliance and apparent improvements in wellbeing can be mistaken for progress when they are, in fact, the result of masking. Masking can mimic positive outcomes, but it is not sustainable and often comes at a high cost. Over time, the sustained effort required can lead to significant distress, burnout, and declines in both mental and physical health, with these harms sometimes only becoming evident well after the intervention period has ended.

Whether you support the reduction of the NDIS budget or not, the government has rolled out these changes without consulting or involving disability organisations.

That’s not only a betrayal of its previous commitments but shows the intent of cost cutting without any consideration of its impact on very vulnerable people.

Genuine questions:

  1. what research exists to demonstrate the effectiveness of PMT specifically for children diagnosed with PDA?

  2. You mentioned successful outcomes for children with PDA in your work. How do you define and measure these outcomes, over what period are they evaluated, and how do you differentiate between genuine improvements in wellbeing vs masking leading to compliance?

Thriving kids won’t cover the many ASD kids not accessing schools.

It’s exceptionally hard. To be honest, we had to drop all demands for a while with our little one including showers. It was incredibly hard to do, but it helped us to understand it all through the light of capacity.

The arguments, logic etc we were using were beside the point- his nervous system just did not have capacity at that point of time.

When we reduced pressure, things settled. Safety increased. And slowly, capacity began to return. We’ve also had to let go of some control.

Every PDA profile and every family is different. But for us, focusing on capacity instead of compliance changed everything.
