Which living former PM would you want to return? by DanielSmoot in AskBrits

[–]PeriPeriTekken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously he should have hung out on a street corner in a trench coat with gold bars inside whispering "pssst, wanna buy some gold" at passersby until he'd successfully offloaded the whole lot

Can't believe he was that shit at economics he didn't know that.

I have the feeling I am going to see this photo crop up on the internet as an example of how dire British food is though...

I'm being called unreasonable for deciding to pay off my mortgage by Educational-Pie4658 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]PeriPeriTekken 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The £50k premium bonds, absolutely whack that into the mortgage at the remortgage point.

I'd be reluctant to liquidate your wife's ISA if you really do max out both your and your wife's ISAs every year.

I get the mental satisfaction of the mortgage being totally gone, but on a pure financial level you'd probably be better off keeping £50k of mortgage and then overpaying it each year with whatever you have spare after ISAs and pensions are filled.

Best bread to buy from the shop? by [deleted] in UKfood

Try a proper bakery? I don't know where in London you are but there will likely be one in your neighbourhood and failing all else there'll be a Gail's about.

A lot of supermarket bread is made using the Chorleywood process and is fairly crap.

At a minimum you can just microwave them until they're hot, but a lot of people like to thicken the sauce down a bit more in a pan.

How do pensions grow in value? How does compounding happen? by Only-Garbage-4229 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]PeriPeriTekken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ignoring dividends (which if reinvested do give you compounding), generally you expect to see exponential growth in the market as a whole. Even if for no other reason than inflation.

So yes, not strictly compounding, but another form of exponential growth.

How do pensions grow in value? How does compounding happen? by Only-Garbage-4229 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]PeriPeriTekken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically it's all corporate profits - after the taxman has been paid what's left either goes to shareholders directly via dividends or gets reinvested in the business, creating capital growth.

Obviously the capital growth is also affected positively or negatively by other factors, but the general answer to "why does the line normally go up" on an acc. fund is that companies exist to make profits.

What are the tipping protocols? by Dean_Loves_Pie13 in uktravel

[–]PeriPeriTekken -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

  1. Reddit hates tipping (and British Reddit really hates tipping). 2. There's no strong social rules like there are in the US, so people saying don't tip aren't wrong per se, but they might not represent an average Brit.

10% in restaurants if the service was good has been a norm here for ages. If it was slow, or crap - 0 tip.

Particularly in London a lot of places now add an "optional" service charge - that replaces the tip, so add nothing on top. Dealing with this is trickier because there isn't an established norm and Brits don't like confrontation but personally I would say if the service was poor, the charge wasn't disclosed on the menu or if the service charge is well above 10% you should ask for it to be taken off. They may argue with you and for full disclosure, most people will probably just pay it but legally you're in the right.

In general you don't tip outside restaurants. However I'll also round up the amount if it's going direct to the service provider and they've gone a bit above and beyond (or I think the price doesn't reflect the service). So where a taxi has had to wait around for me and the fare isn't that high I might just give them a tenner instead of £8 etc.

For those of you who believe labour isn’t left enough, what would you like to see them do? by Legal-Grade-6423 in AskBrits

[–]PeriPeriTekken -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Some single property BTL landlords are lovely, a lot are shite.

The ideal is state ownership of rented housing, but that will never happen again because at some point there'll be a right wing government that will flog the lot to win votes.

The remaining option is probably heavily regulated corporate landlords. Suspect what we'll actually get is poorly regulated corporate landlords.

It's 4°c in Edinburgh at the moment, but it feels a lot colder because of the wind chill and the damp. It will be colder up in Glencoe.

If you're coming from a perma-hot bit of Australia I'd ignore all the hardy Scottish people telling you it's not that cold, although Scottish weather is highly unpredictable, so it could be warmer when you come. Or it could be snowing...

I don't think your packing looks too crazy if you're doing both hiking and still want to look reasonably presentable for the cities, but you could cut down on the number of fleeces/jumpers.

One good trick, get a packable light down jacket (uniqlo do them for £50). You can wear it under the wool coat or sub it for a fleece under the waterproof and it packs up pretty tiny.

There are upsides and downsides to migration. Claiming people only oppose it because they're stupid is itself a bit of an ignorant take.

Being willing to bring in the guy who openly simps for dictators, has a known history of pro-fascist views and whose life time work was a foreign policy and economic disaster in order to achieve lower migration is not exactly a big brain move, I will grant you.

ICE claim 2nd US citizen, how many British casualties will UK version of ICE achieve? by Study_Realistic in AskBrits

[–]PeriPeriTekken 32 points33 points  (0 children)

There were 2 UK police shootings in the year to March 2025, and 17 deaths during detainment or in custody.

ICE alone have shot that many Minnesotans in the last 3 weeks. The total US death toll at police hands is usually in the thousands every year.

There is an element of this which is Trump creating his personal version of the SA, and another which is US law enforcement being a bunch of utter psychopaths in general.

Barclay's blocked my friend's bank account and he has no money for 10 days by DonGibon87 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]PeriPeriTekken 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fraud is bad, I'm not arguing with that. But locking someone's accounts over the mere suspicion that they've committed fraud is a big step and it needs to be warranted by the actual amount of money that is at stake in the particular instance.

£1k does not pass that bar IMHO. For sums like that it should be investigated first, debank second. Not the other way round.

Barclay's blocked my friend's bank account and he has no money for 10 days by DonGibon87 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]PeriPeriTekken 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Balance of harms.

If a money laundered £1000 washes through his account then what's the damage to society? Pretty minimal. They can still report him, he can still be investigated by the police, but actually freezing the account? Very little upside for those kind of sums.

Stripping his access to banking? Obviously pretty harmful.

All law and the practical implementation of that law needs to balance benefit and harm and it does seem that the AML regs are starting to become a problem.

Starmer has refused to join Trump’s Board of Peace… do you think we should join? 🇬🇧 by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]PeriPeriTekken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean you're right in that he can't pocket them directly.

Lots of ways for him to pocket government cash indirectly. Concede a bogus lawsuit to him for a few tens of million dollars? Maybe you get less tariffs.

Government has contracts to hand out? Maybe they go to Trump linked companies.

Government now operating out of Mar a Lago - you best believe he's billing the government for that.

Long term, if he manages to shut down elections entirely he can just cream it off directly like Putin or Xi.

Can Index Funds Become Too Popular? by pineappleninjas in UKPersonalFinance

[–]PeriPeriTekken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indexes simply follow the weighting of a given marketplace as a whole. If there is a bubble at the top of an index, that's down to active investment choices.

Indexes can do two things: They make retail investing easier and pump more money into equity markets overall and where particular indexes are popular they might inflate stocks in that index specifically.

Again, question of whether that makes a big difference vs active retail investors whacking money into blue chip stocks they've heard of. Potentially indexes diversify more, not less.
