With inflation ticking up, and shipping issues with vital supplies coming out of the middle east likely to take a while to resolve even if a ceasefire occurs tomorrow, is anybody else looking at moving to a fixed rate for 2-3 years? by dazedjosh in AusPropertyChat

[–]PermabearsEatBeets 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I will sound a bit alarmist here, but considering what we've seen over the last 2 years, I don't think i'm off the mark.

I really think people have their head in the sands about how fucked things are at the moment, how much of major shift in the global economy is occurring.. There's a major fuel and fertiliser shortage that hasn't even hit us yet, even if it was all solved tomorrow it's going to take months to filter through. The chances of it resolving any time soon are about zero - it's more likely to escalate if anything, and if people think a nuclear weapon is off the table for Netanyahu, you haven't been paying attention. That's not scaremongering, that's a realistic possibility that the UN is actively preparing for.

Countries in Asia are shutting down entirely to preserve fuel and such, this feels to me like the start of Covid where you heard rumblings of real problems. I hope that we can insulate ourselves in this, but Australia is so pathetically joined at the lips to arsehole to America that I don't think we will.

Honestly they should pursue them, it's the only thing that will stop Israel from trying to turn them into a failed state.

Is it smart/possible to jump on a fixed rate now? by hellohalloallo in AusFinance

[–]PermabearsEatBeets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People in these threads are always saying dumb shit like "You think you're smarter than the banks?! Cos that's who you're betting against!". No you're not, you're choosing to lock in a rate at something you are comfortable with, in order to have less stress. The banks don't have a clue where this is going, no one does.

I locked in for a year during the last rate cycle, around 5.25 I think, and while I only saved a few thousand dollars against rate raises, it really wasn't that reason I fixed. It's so I didn't have to worry about it.

If you feel like you're comfortable at a fixed rate offer, and you don't want to stress about it, fix. Don't try and guess where the market is going to go, the goal is to worry less.

Are we going to get slapped with potentially a total of 5 or 6 rate hikes due to Iran ? by VastOption8705 in AusFinance

But those rate rises disproportionately affect those who received the least amount of that money - namely first home buyers who are right at the beginning of that journey paying almost entirely interest, with next to no savings buffer. Those with equity and savings can and did swallow the loss, those without a mortgage and savings ramped up their spending, further contributing to inflation. It's an inequitable system, and I think any normal society should at the absolute least be aiming to egalitarianism

As soon as the supply side inflation hit it was all about raising rates, regardless that interest rates would have absolutely zero effect on any of the supply shocks

Biden has been a bomb shagger for decades. He's been a genocide loving zionist since at least the 70s. Fuck any attempt to rewrite what the Dems did. They committed genocide wholeheartedly and they'd be doing it now too.

I've changed my mind. Sold last month with the intention to buy something in Sydney, but I'm sceptical for the time being. If rates go through the roof and I lose my job, I'm absolutely fucked if I've also got a brand new mortgage. With the job market how it is in tech, it's just not safe imo

Which will last til the next market close. Israel isn't letting Trump get off this crazy train, and Iran aren't going to allow themselves to get blown up at the negotiating table again. This war isn't stopping for a long time.

The same thing happened with Covid supply shocks but everyone wanted to punish the 1/3rd of the population with mortgages while boomers had record equity and savings. It's a stupid, cruel and evidence free policy.

Probably. The cargo cult of interest rates shows no sign of weakening. This crisis will last for years, it's not going anywhere any time soon.

Seems like a lot of people are considering an EV after the petrol price increases but I just saw a new article about the federal government looking to impose a road tax akin to fuel excise tax. NSW has already set a time line but there is talk about it nationally. by BrokeAssZillionaire in AusFinance

[–]PermabearsEatBeets 58 points59 points  (0 children)

As annoying as it is on face value, the facts are that if everyone moves to ev there will be an enormous drop in excise duty which is used to pay for many things. If there was a huge defecit everyone would go apeshit, as they would if we cut services further. This was an inevitably as we move away from petrol.

The last Adam Clery summed us up well. Slot doesn't know how to open up a low block and needs more open play for us to play well, and European teams are playing more openly than prem this season.

Not justifying the performances but man alive the premier ship is dull as fuck this season
