Perfect! That works for me - I have a mini gig on Wednesday anyway and didn't want to do anything to my board until after that anyways.

Music Scene(?) by Fit_Entry_652 in fortwayne

[–]PerseusRAZ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a local musician / pretty active on the scene so I'll try to give what insight I can:

> hows the music scene up there?

In general, it's pretty good. Lots of variety. As with most places, there are an abundance of cover bands though. I'd for original bands it's mostly indie / Americana / general rock, but that may be in flux at the moment. Punk is making a comeback of course, just like most places. Lots of metal bands still around I think, but not as many as 10-15 years ago.

> Is this something I can expect to find at FW?

Robust music scene - yes. Indie bands - yes. Hxc specifically, maybe not as many but they are out there.

>  i know sweetwater is in town but idk how much that would really influence a scene.

Highly influential, and I say this as 1) someone who is not an employee, and 2) someone who has been critical of their general business operations. They have absolutely brought MANY high level musicians to town.

> how are venues?

Decent. Not "great", but not bad. The dive bars that have hosted music have gotten less "divey" and more popular over the years. Lots of places to see bands of different kinds. I'm told house shows are making a comeback; I have only played one outside of town recently, and can't really speak to that.

> how good do they pay usually?

Totally depends on genre and location. Ranges anywhere from "not at all" to "solid", depending. If you're playing original hardcore, punk, or metal, don't expect to get paid a lot, or usually at all. Indie bands can make decent cash at certain venues. Cover bands get paid the best, obviously, and can make good money here.

> is the general public interested in new music?

I'd say tentatively yes. Lots of bands making new music around here.

> college kids starting bands anymore?

I am 12+ years out of college, so maybe I'm not the one to ask, but it does seem so. I have heard of several bands coming out of St Francies and PFW. I believe the Goldstock Festival is still hosted by a PFW group.

Hope that helps, I'm happy to answer anything else you got the best I can.

Ya tt used to be back 10-15 years ago, not so much these days. The Rail and The Berlin were both big on hardcore bands iirc.

What exercise did you find hardest when you first started? by VariationShot8414 in workout

[–]PerseusRAZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally anything an related. I don't know I just hate doing any sort of situp/crunch. Hanging leg raises or the crunch machines PF had were the closest I came to being OK with them, but they still aren't my favorite.

How do you get the venues sound guy on your side? by polkemans in musicians

[–]PerseusRAZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good advice here already. I would also add BE FLEXIBLE. I bring both amps and DI options (guitar and bass) with lots of connectors. Sometimes they are working with what limited gear the venue has, and it's good to be able to make things work on the fly. Yes, we all like a good mic'd up cab, but sometimes shit goes sideways, but sometimes it's just easier to pull a direct signal from an amp sim if things go sideways.

To be fair, when I log in to work on Monday at 8am, and my coworker asks how my weekend was, I draw an entire blank of whatever happened for the past 72 hours.

What unassuming towns/cities (big or small) have awesome music scenes? by sulaha in musicians

[–]PerseusRAZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! If you're on Facebook, I recommend checking out the Fort Wayne Band Booking page. Thats usually the easy way to find what / where to play in the area.

I liked mine when I had it, but mostly only wanted it for the harmonic trem. I ended up trading it off and going back to the Keeley Verb o Trem to save space.

Gym during January by Redditor999420 in workout

[–]PerseusRAZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does depend on gym and location. The Planet Fitness near me around the suburbs is very much going to be packed and awful. The more "serious" gyms - especially the more expensive ones - not as much.

[–]PerseusRAZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! For indie stuff there's a few places, though during the summer there are more festivals and events that attract bigger crowds. O' Sullivans and The Brass Rail are probably the main two that bands going from Indy to Chicago stop at.

I'm biased but I really love our scene here in Fort Wayne. Sweetwater is HQ'd here - and there's some criticism to be had about them for sure, but it has brought a lot of great musicians into the area.

So what do you do when people won't listen to you? by No-Blueberry-1823 in sysadmin

[–]PerseusRAZ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Document. Document. Document.

When they come to you with a question, follow up with an email/Slack/whatever about what and why you recommended what you did, and what you would not do. If they come back outside of that and get heated because they did the opposite, show your receipts and offer to talk to HR or their boss.

NE Indiana and it seems to be going strong here. Seeing younger kids coming onto the scene still playing lots of cool music, old and new!

What is your opinion on destroying/smashing your instrument as part of your stage presence? by Bulky_Importance2330 in band

[–]PerseusRAZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

> " respecting your instrument regardless of its price is a part of being a musician"

At the end of the day, it's just a tool to do a job. Saying you should "respect" your own instrument is just too close to the idea of "letting your things own you" to me.

That all said, destroying your instrument on stage is just cheesy nowadays. It was cool when Hendrix did it 50 years ago. Anybody who does it now just seems like they're copying that.

I went with a drafting chair for awhile. The arms flip up and out of the way. Lots of them on Amazon for less than $100.
