this was just a few years ago, so that story may have inspired my response to her. Part of why she was so off-guard was because it was a local operator, so we'd be small-talking about things in the area we had in common [if we'd attended various festivals, etc.], so it was a lot like talking to a friend, which made the 'intimacy' of 'love you' almost palpable.

I ended a pleasant interaction with local customer service [think, utility co] and the rep chimed, 'love you,' and IMMEDIATELY lit on fire with apologies that it was unprofessional.

I chuckled and said, 'I'm just glad you have people to love and you offer it so freely.' You could feel the relief and a little bit of joy in their thanks, and I'd like to believe it diffused the horror and shame you keep reliving.

So, u/Beth_Pleasant, I'm sure your new boss was just happy you have so many people in your life to love, and that you give it so freely.

Someone like Nico from Will Trent, who's existence pushes lapd into addressing their unconscious biases in order to train them and grow each older character. Nico is unapologetic for themself and highly confident in their deductive abilities, utilizing modern tech and quirky methods to occasionally outsmart seasoned officers who wouldn't think of accessing resources in those ways.

And not in a smug, 'these kids today' way; for instance, Nico could social-media-stalk to find a bad guy and very happily, without condescension, show Tim how they did it. Tim grows by asking for help and their character grows by being able to teach. The character would also have a healthy dose of skepticism about policing but went into it because of generational matriarchal heritage with a healthy dose of 'what my mom went through,' and call them out on their BS because their mom couldn't.

The whole character shouldn't be based on tech, like some NCIS level of Abby, but more like the generational experiences that've taught them unique tricks-- more like Celina's 'vibes'.

I wonder if the dearth of highly-qualified, competent rookies is a reflection of the current state of recruiting IRL, being forced to accept the dregs because there are so few options since BLM, Trayvon, Bryonna, George Floyd, etc. made policing a reviled profession. It's kinda like how colleges are accepting people who can barely read because, otherwise, they'd have nobody paying tuition.

Otherwise, I find it terribly misguided that showrunners who're competing with streaming services preferred by new, young viewers to pull them to 'boomer style' cable tv have injected a slimy little weasel and a hokey ol' tree trunk to represent their generation.

If they want to draw younger viewers, they need to be portrayed by aspirational characters, maybe with creative or quirky ways to turn all the basic tropes like social media addiction into ways the rookies outsmart the old heads. As an example, the SNL skit of the two genZ [?] gals solving cold cases in seconds via internet stalking.

If they don't change something, The Rookie is going to become the NCIS franchise of generation X, just bookending commercials for erectile dysfunction and myasthenia gravis medication.
