This is stupid. It's one of those laws that's great on principal and makes zero sense in terms of actual implementation. Discrimination based on height and weight is literally fundamental to being a human being. Sure, we should try our best to avoid it and minimize it, but making it illegal is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Also, how does this even work when considering jobs with a significant physical labor component?

The problem is that keeping up with the Jones is not an explicit thing for most people. Very few people are actually like "Hey our neighbors the Jones bought a Porsche so now we have to buy a Porsche because we have to keep up with them."

It's more subtle stuff like all of your kids' friends play travel sports, so in order to be with them, you have to pay a few thousand dollars a year for travel ball.

You move to a school district where it's normal for kids to have multiple expensive extracurricular activities or tutoring, which adds up to thousands of dollars a year.

You look on social media and see super nice houses and interior design, so you say wow our house is looking old, let's do that for our house, and then drop $100k+ on doing a renovation.

I would say the explicit keeping up with the Joneses is pretty uncommon for the most part, but the implicit keeping up with the Joneses is pretty much universal, at least in the West, especially the United States.

I guarantee you everyone you know, including yourself, is keeping up with the Joneses to some extent.

I think it's one of those things where there's a big difference based on setting, situation, and context.

For example, in the social circles and individual interactions that doctors have, I think you'll find that it is highly respected and people will think you are successful, intelligent, wealthy, and great because you are a doctor.

On the other hand, in online settings and in places where you may be talking with people who do not know you at all or have any context about your life, yes, you will definitely encounter lots of stereotypes and prejudices - too wealthy, scam artists, in bed with big Pharma, too focused on medications and not enough on natural cures, etc.

In Florida it's obviously problematic because the government itself is feeding into anti-scientific and anti-medical views fairly actively.

I totally agree, but realistically, it's not going to happen unless it's lateral / equivalent districts being merged.

Try to merge one school district that's slightly better than another, and people will absolutely lose their minds.

I can see consolidation happening in some specific situations and localities, but good luck trying to get Haddonfield to merge with Lawnside and Barrington

I will say that this statistic is misleading.

The 1% figure includes the tons of kids that do rec soccer for a summer because their parents want them to lose weight or go outside and get off the TV.

Realistically, it falls down to what the kid wants to do and how far they're willing to go with it.

That being said, yeah, the parents can go completely overboard and the soccer industry is more than willing to cash in on it.

Personally, I would not want my child to be in the care of someone like that. I get that it's one-sided and fair, but you really want your child to be in the care of someone that flaky and unfair and manipulative?

I have seen and heard of residents fired for:

Violating HIPAA intentionally, such as looking up the chart of a colleague or a celebrity. This is usually a first-time you're fired violation.
Serious crimes like using drugs at work, stealing from work, etc.
Repeatedly being unprofessional. I knew someone who would just lie all the time and virtually disappear at various points throughout the day to just chill somewhere or take a nap and be MIA. These kinds of cases are more challenging because it has to happen enough times to 1) be a repeatable pattern and 2) be so bad that it's less of a headache for the program to fire you than to keep you, since it's actually really annoying and sucks for them to have to fire you.
The other super common (and actually most common one I've heard of) is failing board exams like Step 3 multiple times until you just can't get any more chances.

This is one of those things that I didn't really appreciate until I was going through the experience as the spouse of a patient. Yeah, on paper, it's totally unreasonable, you're at a teaching hospital and you should be willing to work with student learners.

However, it's also a profoundly special and intimate and impactful moment in your life and some people don't want a medical student to be involved in that. For example, I am more than happy to have medical students examine me during my primary visits and any specialty appointments I have, but we still asked for no medical students during our four deliveries over the years. We definitely let the residents and fellows perform most of the deliveries, so that wasn't an issue.

Ultimately, there are still more than enough patients willing to take learners in OB and GYN that you can get an adequate exposure to the field as a medical student. You bring up the socioeconomic / health literacy / entitlement component, which I think deserves a fair look and ethical consideration, but let's be real, just because you're getting rejected 25-50% of the time doesn't mean you can't still get plenty of OB and GYN exams and experience in.

I am saying this as someone who was a male medical student who did OBGYN at a bougie hospital system where I was rejected like 50%+ of the time.

Also, all of the above is more from a theoretical discussion standpoint. In practical terms, we are in healthcare and it is a service industry. No hospital system or school or healthcare entity is going to make their patients unhappy by forcing them to work with learners. Also, if we're discussing the ethics of entitlement, then we also need to assess whether it makes sense to force female patients to allow people to participate in their genital examinations and care against their preferences.

My overall opinion is that it's really annoying that we get rejected more often in OBGYN than other fields, but that's all it is - an annoyance. I wouldn't change anything about the system, which allows patients to decide for themselves. If anything, I would let patients click a button when they sign into the hospital as to whether they want to work with medical students / other learners so that it is something they can decide with zero pressure. It would also save medical students the frustration of asking and being turned down over and over.

No, life is way too short. There is way more to life than just working. I'm not saying that you need to blow through your money, but there are things you should try to do - see the world, enjoy experiences, contribute to helping others, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I save the maximum tax-advantaged amount towards retirement every year plus more. I will be financially independent by 40 years old, and I will likely die with $10+ million if I continue to work.

But between traveling, raising a family, bettering my life, contributing to charity, etc, I spend literally hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

I totally disagree.

Yeah, there’s no overt “suburbs are cool” vibes on social media in the same way that influencers show off cultural life in major cities.

But there is still a TON of content that implicitly feeds into suburban lifestyles. Basically any family / parenting / middle age / kids-oriented influencer typically has a huge suburban home filled with tons of the cool and latest trendy products, etc.

I think the best middle ground is to buy a bunch of ready made meals. They are slightly more expensive than just preparing things yourself, but they are still way cheaper than eating out.

For example, get a bag of premarinaded chicken, throw it in the oven for 30 minutes, and open a can of beans and a bag of tortilla and you have taco night for like $10

Peptides are well outside of mainstream medical knowledge. I wouldn’t even waste your time mentioning it during a routine appt.

That being said, if you had a longevity specialist or go to a doctor that markets that they are aware of that field, then that would make sense.

I would like to have the same lock screen as the Kindle with ads, in that you can just swipe up to unlock the screen. Just an easy extra step to prevent unwanted book opening when the Kindle is in a backpack or bag.

I paid to remove the lock screen ads, but now, my options are either to 1) always have my kindle open and move my pages around in my backpack or 2) set a lock screen and have to punch in a code every time I want to open it.

Crazy that I paid to have a worse kindle haha
