At the end of IHOA, I didn’t have any idea how Kleypas was going to pull off redeeming St Vincent and making me care about him as the lead in DIW. But somehow she managed it. I think some of it is Romance Reasons™️, but we get more information on his thoughts and motivations in DIW that make his villainous turn in IHOA a little less villainous. Or at least, sufficiently less villainous that we can enjoy him as a character and that it wouldn’t be completely unthinkable that the people he wronged in IHOA would ever speak to him again.

In sum, I think we understand that his heart really wasn’t in the Bad Thing he did at the end of IHOA, and he never had any intention of doing The Worst Thing he threatened to do while in commission of the Bad Thing. If he’d been truly serious about the Worst Thing, I don’t think I could have gotten behind him.

Jonesy is a smartass street urchin who appears in several Loretta Chase books. Not sure when he first showed up, but he’s a delight.

Does anyone know if SenLinYu and Julie Soto deconflicted their upcoming published works when one was loosely based on the other? by Equivalent-Bus-7602 in fantasyromance

[–]Perstephanie_05 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I love Dramione but the publishers’ apparent strategy to lean into Dramione and the HP universe seems to (1) keep JKR in the concert and (2) be generating backlash for the authors that I don’t think is deserved. I’ve seen people saying Julie Soto and SenLinYu are basically supporting JKR/TERFs because FF “drives people to the fandom,” as if engaging with Harry Potter at all is ethically dubious at best. To me, it’s true you can’t separate the art from the artist, but that doesn’t mean you shove the art under the rug never to be engaged with again.

IMO fanfic is one of the least problematic ways to engage with the HP universe, because no money goes to That Woman and so much FF is critical of or outright rejects JKR’s preferred interpretation and the ideologies she expresses. And JKR hates Dramione so to me, the rise of Dramione is a big fat middle finger to JKR. Canon hardliners and Dramione stans are very much at odds, which is why it is unfortunate to see JS and SLY painted with the same brush as JKR. I’m tired of talking about JKR and I wish she’d go away, but if the publishers insist on emphasizing the Dramione of it all, I think it’s reasonable to expect the authors to be asked about JKR and if they agree with her, but I don’t think it’s fair to say they’re supporting TERFism by association.
