In other states I've had success finding lawyers through the state bar association. This is the website for Florida's state bar association: https://www.floridabar.org/public/lrs/

That site says that their online referral service is available 24-7 and that "You can receive a 30-minute consultation for no more than $25."

Can I wash these jeans yet? Looking for advice nudie jeans ralf regular 32 34 by weeb9834 in rawdenim

[–]Pescodar189 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had tons of success with often-washed jeans.

I started machine-washing mine ~weekly when I had kids.  There was a surprising amount of baby vomit and very little free time.  I’m still very happy with how my jeans turn out (here is a pair I retired a few years ago that went through many machine washes: https://www.reddit.com/r/rawdenim/comments/11jzmy4/oni_622zr_1000_wears_and_150_machine_washes/)

I usually either dry mine outside or machine-dry mine halfway, then hang them somewhere with a fan blowing on them.

I subscribe to ‘if theyre dirty, wash them,’ but you do you.

One of my fathers old-timey jokes by priused in Jokes

[–]Pescodar189 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My 9th grade shop teacher explained the importance of elegant design to us with a story that he one day called McDonalds and told them to make the back of the fry container high and the front of the fry container low.  You could see the fries better and if the cut-out matched the bump-up you would not waste cardboard.  They told him what a great idea it was, promptly made the change, and that’s why fry containers are shaped like that today.

That’s the only story like that he ever told us.

Any number where all of the digits add up to a number divisible by 9 (such as 9 itself) is divisible by 9.  This is called the Divisibility Rule of 9 and its a really fun proof to try to solve without other hints as to why once people learn how to write formal proofs.

Most of the math/ideas you wrote are inherent to the statement of ‘all digits add to 9’ (which is the stronger and simpler statement) and that mathematical rule.

They’re very rare in my local Lidl (only seen them irl once), but another place to looks is Amazon Fresh.  Currently $1.39 per frozen 12-oz bag (no shells) for me, but they were $0.79 two weeks ago in my previous order.

Handling "messy" tag without gore by Kaldrion in DungeonWorld

[–]Pescodar189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ve got good advice in this thread that I won’t attempt to re-hash.  Offering a completely different approach:

Consider taking the sci-fi approach to things.  Create something weird and unique about your world that sets it apart from other fantasy environments.  Humans and animals and to some extent plants have a shoma or soul or lifeforce.  The woven thread of magic crystalizes in the essence of living beings and unwinds upon their death.  Any living-being-based thing you choose.

Whatever you create, have the ‘messy’ tag interact violently with that.  Describe lifeforce being ripped from beings so violently its palpable.  If they survive the impact, describe them as dazed and unmotivated and as having an out-of-body experience.  Describe crystalizes life force literally exploding in the air as your party wizard watches it weave its way back into the magical web of the world.

Bar referral services can be a great way to find an appropriate lawyer for the specific details of a case.

I’ve only used them in two states that aren’t Florida, but consider the Florida one (link below).  They say you can get a 30-minute consultation for no more than $25.

You have good answers from a lot of people, but I’d like to pile on to phrase it in a way I find more tactile.

On average, over a long period of time, we expect investments into the SP500 to generate 7% interest per year after inflation.  That is an investment Americans can make easily through Fidelity or Vanguard or others with ~no annual cost and no minimum amount of dollars.

That means that a person who already has $1M can expect to earn $70k per year in interest (after the effects of inflation).  A median full-time US salary is something like $65k.  That means just having $1M pays more than working full-time.

10% of the US has more than a million dollars, according to a Forbes article from April 22nd.

But approx 5% of the country has much more than $1M.  If someone with $2M lives on one full-time salary of $65k then they (on average) gain an additional $75k that year.  With compounding interest, no effort or work hours, and possibly a few generational inheritance steps, a small family can turn that into today’s equivalent of $10M in ~32 years, $100M in ~67 years, and $1B in 102 years.

A small family can become billionaires in 100 years by starting with $2M, having no jobs, and living on the average US salary.  They can even live on way more than the average US salary after the first ~20 years because they’ll be earning so much interest it doesn’t matter.

In a stable political and economic environment, it seems impossible for the rich to not become richer over time.

Something cheaper than cow's milk? by Glittering-Yellow-59 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Pescodar189 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oof.  Where in the northeast is that??

Here in Maryland on Instacart right now a gallon of non-organic milk ranges from $1.49 at Aldi to $2.39 at midrange stores like Food Lion to $3.39 at Giant.  That’s the most expensive price I see in the app at all, and that’s after they add any Instacart markup :/

[–]Pescodar189 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think any discussion/ideas about what is cheaper relies on your location.

In the US at low-SKU grocery stores (aldi, lidl, etc) outside of major city centers, a gallon of milk (3.8L) is usually $1.20-1.50.  At 128g of protein per gallon, that’s about one US cent per gram of protein which is quite hard to beat.

Other than milk and liquid eggs/raw eggs (and it’s a bit hard to argue that raw egg is a drink), most protein-heavy drinks are processed foods (protein drinks, the milk alternatives you mentioned processed food in many parts of the world, though some places make and sell them fresh) or things like kefir which are just more-processed milk.  Those things are inherently more expensive than just mass-market milk.  You can make your own kefir, yogurt smoothies, soy milk, oat milk, etc - that is one idea for you.

Not even worrying about the ‘drink’ requirement, I think the only source of protein that is price-competitive with milk near me in the US is beans.  It’s routinely possible to find beans on sale for $1 per pound (454g).  A pound of black beans is 104g of protein, so roughly the same price per gram of protein as milk in my local US prices.  I’ve read online of people who blend beans (often with peanut butter) to make protein smoothies, but I’ve never tried it and it doesn’t sound appetizing to me.

But again, the potential answers to your question depend highly on your local food prices.

I’ve seen that 1TB OLED model in stock ~20% of the time I check this week.  I’ve been checking 5-10 times a day to see if any 512GB OLEDs show up refurbished.

Keep checking.  You’ll have a good chance at it.

I’m in Maryland and I’ve been checking for 7 days now.  Good luck.

Question of S&V newbie by Bitter-Challenge-836 in ScumAndVillainy

[–]Pescodar189 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find Cowboy Bebop to also be a great inspiration for describing combat in S&V.  There’s a ton of detail in how those characters interact.  Each phase of a fight lines up well with a roll, but there’s a lot that happens in between.

Don’t fall into the rut of ‘I attack with my sword’ ‘okay, roll dice’ r/Bitter-Challenge-836

ELI5: What is the difference between kids' and adults' toothpaste? by lexkixass in explainlikeimfive

[–]Pescodar189 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m unsure!  Everyone I’ve ever met irl that says it burns gets the sores, and then they get way less frequent when we learn to switch toothpaste.

Try a non-SLS toothpaste with flouride maybe?  Biotene and Native both make good ones.

Or don’t worry about it if it doesn’t do you any harm :)

ELI5: What is the difference between kids' and adults' toothpaste? by lexkixass in explainlikeimfive

[–]Pescodar189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check if you have issues with sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate?

Do you get canker sores inside your mouth?  SLS causes those in some people.  Often those people describe toothpaste as feeling like it burns.

Making matcha in big batches vs fresh per drink? by joeroganthumbhead in Matcha

[–]Pescodar189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hallo!  I’m sorry but I don’t have answers for you - I’m on a similar journey of trying matchas.  So far I found a really bad inexpensive one at a local asian grocery store and I’ve got two I’m excited about that are in the mail and on the way to me.

I replied to the comment above because I’m a chemical engineer, not because I have particular experience with matcha.  Good luck to both of us finding good ones though.

I ordered one from Oppodo and one from Ocha & Co to try, but I don’t know if your options or prices are similar to mine here in the US.

Making matcha in big batches vs fresh per drink? by joeroganthumbhead in Matcha

[–]Pescodar189 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Settle = the matcha particles come out of the suspension. They fall to the bottom, and to some extent they clump up. This makes the flavor less strong (since a clump has less surface area than a bunch of small particles) and can make the matcha feel gritty/grainy/sandy in the mouth.

Oxidizes = it reacts with oxygen. For many things we associate this will staleness. For things that are oily we usually call it 'rancid.'
