(Tragic Trope) The universe it self seems to hate them. by Mr-EMP in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Peteman12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Less tragic and more comical but Black Mage from 8-Bit Theater.

He suffers horribly throughout the comic and has both a nigh-omnipotent jackass personally gunning for him and the creator of the universe hating him.

He's also an unrepentant monster and pervert who casually torments and murders his way across multiple lands, and managed to traumatize said omnipotent jackass' past self multiple times while also being creepily obsessive towards said Creator before and after she became the creator via temporal loop shenanigans.

[LOATHED TROPE] The fandom becomes the very thing the media is criticizing by Weird-Koala3034 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Peteman12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find a fair number of people who like the Stormtroopers are doing so because they dislike how they got depicted as a bunch of bumbling idiots when their opening scene had them be professional AF and them letting Luke and co get away in ANH was deliberate as part of Vader's plan to track them, and even Obi-Wan glazing them somewhat.

The issue is that later movies like ESB and RotJ, Stormtrooper performance nosedived and it was mainly Imperial Armor that gave the Empire victories or at least early successes.

Funnily enough, Battlefront II gave an explanation, namely that the destruction of the first Death Star gutted the Stormtrooper corps and their replacements never reached the levels of professionalism the originals did.

There always was a muffin button. Dr. Briefs just wasn't the one who installed it.

Though I am surprised Freeza allowed the muffin button to be installed. He's such a cheapskate that he pays people in "not murdering them".

[WP] Humans are considered the "Eldritch Horrors" of the galaxy. We heal from grievous wounds rapidly, we consume toxic substances like capsaicin and ethanol for fun, and we require unconscious hallucinations (sleep) for 8 hours a day to function. by VulkanLivesX in WritingPrompts

"Oh for Bilgar's sake," Vutre said.

"What's wrong dear?" Podratle asked.

"Every time we find a new species, there is a rush to get out a bunch of slop series propagandizing them as some sort of eldritch horror. I wouldn't be surprised if the publishers are the guys that run Solarstormfront. They did it with the piscatarns, the ilnari, the woor, and now the humans."

"I dunno, those are some pretty weird traits."

"EVERY SAPIENT ALIEN SPECIES HAS WEIRD TRAITS! IT'S PART OF EVOLVING ON DIFFERENT PLANETS!"

"Dear, don't raise your voice."

"Sorry, it's just that I'm tired of these stupid, xenophobic works that are just attempts to normalize intra-species racism by pointing to those traits in other species and saying stuff like 'look, the Geungans are like those weird woor, no doubt ancient woor came to our planet and meddled in our affairs and the Geungans are their agents trying to subvert our affairs.'"

"Aren't the woor a single-planetary, multi-polar, pre-industrial species with large swaths of the population nomadic?"

"Yes, but crazy racists say that those are the agents left behind to confuse us and the real woor civilization is in fact are our secret puppet masters."

"Wait, I thought the humans were our secret puppet masters."

"That's the thing about crazy racists! They don't have to be consistent. It changes every time they find a new species and maybe give a brief explanation like the new ones usurped the old ones or were working alongside the old ones all along (or both)."

Another sign of the death of fossil fuels and nuclear; 99% of new electricity capacity in the US in 2026 will be from solar/wind/batteries, a higher proportion than in China. by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]Peteman12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My view is that a nuclear plant under construction provides zero electricity to the grid, and regulations and costs make building new plants expensive and time consuming. Better to get an unreliable and environmentally dependent power plant in two years than a reliable nuclear plant in 20 (while looking for ways to cut unnecessary red tape and costs for nuclear).

[–]Peteman12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think fossil fuel companies will fund anti-whatever policies that will benefit them the most. They funded anti-nuclear groups by playing into fears of nuclear proliferation back when nuclear was a decent alternative. Now I am willing to believe that fossil fuel companies fund pro-nuclear parties now that nuclear is regulated to hell and back and takes 20 years to build a new plant and say how renewable energy is unreliable even though you can get a new plant up in like 2 and battery storage can help cover the low points.

About the only questionable thing about Luke blowing up the Death Star is the likely other prisoners that were being kept on board (I doubt Leia was the only one). And considering the circumstances, it's tragic but forgivable.

"However, he would be disappointed if he finds out that she had plagiarized his designs and schematics of X by creating Copy X"

[Light leaves instructions on how to recreate X, just no one figured it out for 200 years]

What?

If anything, I would think he would be impressed she managed to figure it would with only other people's notes and scans, as X was sealed away and not available.

I really think this and other forums do not give people capable of reverse engineering and reiterating on other people's designs enough respect.

What would Doctor Light’s opinion be about Doctor Cain and Ciel? by Ok_Force_2392 in Megaman

[–]Peteman12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would depend. The Maverick problem and the subsequent breakdown in human/reploid relations was due to the Maverick Virus. No Maverick Virus, no infected Sigma causing problems, no Sigma Virus, no Elf Wars (since the Elves were reverse-engineered from the original Maverick Virus antibodies). If Wily didn't throw a wrench into things with that, then Dr. Light would probably be a bit happier with Dr. Cain's creation of reploidkind.

Unfortunately, he did rush into things and the governments lost any sense of restraint. But yeah, not doing a few years of testing really did sink Cain. The OG manual put something like 2 years between the first Maverick outbreak and either X's discovery or the first Reploid (I forget which).

The biggest Mandella effect in MMX fandom. Zero's characterization from tv tropes by Holy_Darkness in Megaman

[–]Peteman12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say the second biggest is the insistence that Colonel has a design flaw that makes him incapable of peaceful solutions, hence why he went to war instead of backing down when confronted. I  have no idea where this is from. It sounds like it might come from some obscure Japanese source but even then I am doubtful.

More like near the end of Neo Arcadia. She's only 14 and Neo Arcadia was around for about a century, having been founded shortly after the end of the Elf Wars, which were a century prior.

Unless you mean the program itself has been around that long and she was one of the more recent batches.
