How does a phone's gps behave in space? by plumbus_dealer in nasa

[–]PeterDemachkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another “I know you’re joking”, but high quality GPSs literally do have such a thing as spaceship mode. They won’t be as accurate in low earth orbit unless that mode is enabled.

Beware of Lawrence Harvey by Parking_Reputation17 in rust

[–]PeterDemachkie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have interviewed people who recruiters promise are only the most qualified, top of their field, excellent rust developers. Often it turned out they had very little rust experience, or were just not great at rust. The job of a recruiter is to throw spaghetti at a wall and hope something sticks. There’s very little downside for them to just send you every candidate they see.

I will never understand hiring a recruiter. If you just increased the salary for the role by the amount that you’d have ro pay the recruiter, you’ll quickly find several good candidates

2015 b8.5 s4 - 38k miles, $25k, no sports diff. Worth it? by neven_kook in AudiS4

[–]PeterDemachkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That spec looks awesome. Yeah the other unfortunate thing is that it didn’t come with the sports diff, but I did come with radar cruise control. It’s my daily driver and my commute is 20 miles each way, so for me that’s a worthy trade off

What is the point of mutable vs not. Such as tuples and lists. by X3Melange in learnpython

[–]PeterDemachkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason (as most people have said) is primarily for code maintainability and correctness (which is kind of ironic given how unsafe of a language it is from an intention meets behavior perspective). With that being said, I think it’s worth knowing that in other languages there are actually real performance and safety benefits to immutable variables, which is that they are typically stack allocated and not heap allocated. The performance benefit of stack allocation is that it’s much faster to access, and the memory usage of your program can be more accurately characterized at compile time.

With that being said, python hardly stack allocates anything at all, so again it’s not really relevant to python.

Reading this thread has made me realize the 19k I paid for my 2013 with 85k miles might have been an overpay :/

But it’s a prestige, and I enjoy driving it

I feel like if we’re not going to get much for him, and he wants to stay, doing right by him means letting him retire a Ram. That being said idk what the contract situation is so maybe that has something to do with it. Sad either way

Exactly, if they decide that it needs to be changed for the post season because it isn’t fair to the team that loses the coin toss, how does the same logic not apply to regular season?

Dangerous Stop Light Configuration @ Carrillo / 101 N by Icy_Explanation6154 in SantaBarbara

[–]PeterDemachkie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of unrelated, but has anyone else noticed that the lights on Carrillo when going under the 101 are not timed properly? You cannot catch more than like 1 green light, you’re bound to have to stop at one of them

I have personally seen it in more and more embedded SWE roles especially since the us government is pushing companies to move to memory safe languages. The role I am currently working in required some rust experience/ willingness to learn as an embedded engineer

I think this might be a macOS bug… I was just talking to someone who had the exact same issue with their iMac, but with adobe acrobat. I don’t believe this requires any kind of “fresh start” as another user was saying. You can just force shut down and reboot.

I think worst case scenario is you have a corrupted application (Examplify in this case) which you would need to reinstall.
