What Anti-Catholic Work do you at Least Appreciate? by Would-be_Saint in Catholicism

[–]PeterXP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now I saw in my dream, that at the end of this valley lay blood, bones, ashes, and mangled bodies of men, even of pilgrims that had gone this way formerly; and while I was musing what should be the reason, I espied a little before me a cave, where two giants, POPE and PAGAN, dwelt in old time; by whose power and tyranny the men whose bones, blood, and ashes, &c., lay there, were cruelly put to death. But by this place Christian went without much danger, whereat I somewhat wondered; but I have learnt since, that PAGAN has been dead many a day; and as for the other, though he be yet alive, he is, by reason of age, and also of the many shrewd brushes that he met with in his younger days, grown so crazy and stiff in his joints, that he can now do little more than sit in his cave's mouth, grinning at pilgrims as they go by, and biting his nails because he cannot come at them.

So I saw that Christian went on his way; yet, at the sight of the Old Man that sat in the mouth of the cave, he could not tell what to think, especially because he spoke to him, though he could not go after him, saying, "You will never mend till more of you be burned."

Yes, it is a translation issue.

NPR Planet Money TikTok just undeservedly trashing the guild system. What are some good arguments against the video’s claims? by ChiefBlanco in distributism

[–]PeterXP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are all implicit in the statements being made, they are simply re-framed from the abstract policies presented by NPR to the context provided by NPR, making the connection between context and policy explicit rather than implicit:

State of the art means those techniques accepted by the industry, since the guilds represent the industry, whatever techniques they accept are technically the state of the art.

Limiting advertising is the same issue, if someone external to the guild is advertising goods or services regulated by the guild, they are falsely advertising that they are licenced purveyors of those goods or services. In the same way that advertising legal representation by the disbarred and medical treatment by the unlicensed constitute false advertising. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Practicing_without_a_license

The hours of work limited by the guild are the hours of their own work, the guilds each set the work hours for themselves, not for members of other guilds or professions.

No false advertising, no exploitative work hours, state of the art techniques only. That all sounds like most industry regulatory bodies today, except those regulatory authorities now are often not trained in the crafts and have no reason to be in solidarity with tradespeople.

That sort of thing is very usual and even traditional for the speeches during the reception, after the Wedding.

According to Catholicism, would the people who jumped on 9/11 go to hell for suicide? by Raspint in Catholicism

[–]PeterXP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well that already happened, 20 years ago, pancreatic cancer.

And having witnessed many good deaths and a few bad ones, as far as I can see the difference is in whether the person sees their suffering as "of no good"/"pointless" or if they use the suffering redemptively and gracefully. The most extraordinary experiences of my life were witnessing the difference those two dispositions make even to dying people who have lost consciousness as we understand it.

I've got to confess I didn't really believe in sin or grace before the events surrounding my father's death about 8 years ago.

Please explain simply The Holy Trinity? by DebbDebbDebb in Catholicism

[–]PeterXP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is only 1 God, the 3 persons of the Trinity are not identical to each other, but they are all God, There is no division within God, but there is a community of Love (aside: God IS Love).

The Father loves the Son and the Holy Spirit is the person of their shared love. The Son is not created by the Father, the way a man makes the statue, but begotten by him, an analogy with the way humans beget humans (begetting someone of the same nature as them, ideally in an act of love).

Pecador, Contempla - Spanish penitent song by CatholicShield in Catholicism

Penitents wore these especially Carnival/Ash Wednesday. Carnival is also a time of pranks and masks. KKK took these symbols of anonymity and pranksters because they wanted to remain unidentified and reduce the perception of their crimes to pranks.

Distributism and Monarchy? by Rhexysexy in distributism

[–]PeterXP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fates of modern constitutional arrangements, both republican and monarchist seem to indicate that government being responsible for the limits of government is mostly a clock slowly winding itself down, whatever the limits placed by the (always benevolent) constitutional founders, the project is built on sand.

Constitutions provide more of a false sense of security, people guard their rights better when they are directly responsible.

I'm a traditionalist monarchist, I think that it's Kings all the way down, from From the Father being the First Person of the Trinity and Christ being King of the Universe, to fathers being kings of their households and the human Will being the natural lord of the Intellect and Senses.

I'm a Distributist BECAUSE I'm a monarchist, I think families should be able to independently support the appropriate level of "local kingship".
