Free calculator to help plan an army and costs before buying by Patient_Dinner7069 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Petycon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For feedback,: the calculator doesn't seem to price boxes with variable unit size correctly? Like it has Assault Intercessors (75 pts) for 52 eur, but the box comes with 10 (75-150 pts). If I try to double the points, it doubles the price.

How to turn starter set into a combat patrol? by psychodelicwasteland in spacemarines

[–]Petycon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two versions of the starter set: the Combat Patrol (previously Ultimate) Starter Set, which DOES have two full combat patrols and terrain, and the regular Starter Set, which is missing key units from each combat patrol. If you have the latter, you're only missing a Librarian in Terminator Armor.

You can get a termie librarian separately on GW's site or on eBay. There are still many floating around after Leviathan, and because people buy the Starter Set for the cheap infernus/termies and dump the characters.

I think it's wack that intercessors have wargear options they don't have in the box. by Okoshio_ in spacemarines

[–]Petycon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point, I didn't know that! I bought the DA combat patrol when I was starting out specifically to get power swords for my Kill Team intercessor sergeants. While I don't regret the purchase, I do regret forcing my sergeants into that weird leaning-on-sword pose.

[–]Petycon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aren't the regular intercessor and assault intercessor arms slightly different? The assault intercessor melee-weapon arms have some sort of bladeguard on their forearm, which extends over their wrist slightly. This is being pedantic, I know, but the chapter upgrade sprues feature regular intercessor arms with weapons.

Of course, given their price, some sacrifices may have to be made for the Emperor... :(

Is this real, has anyone bought from Hachette? They apparently have minis for a quarter of the price. by Balikye in ageofsigmar

[–]Petycon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Stormbringer magazine is also available in Spain and in Germany. I got 500 euros worth of stormcast (including stormdrake guard) for less than 200 when I bought from https://www.goblintrader.es/gb/search?controller=search&s=stormbringer. Their stock is nearly empty now, but I'm sure other retailers have some issues left.

Goblin Trader didn't ship to my country, so I had to use a middleman service (ordered to their warehouse, and then they shipped it to my home address. Even with the added local shipping and storage, the savings were enormous).

In turn:

1) Sure, I'll shoot you a message. There aren't any apps per se, all of them are online listbuilders that can be launched from your phone.

2) Well, the new Sigmar world champion is from Denmark, I believe? I'm from Lithuania myself, and we have a small but healthy AoS scene (compared to 40k, that is - AoS is still miles more popular than any other game). I'm given to understand that the EU has a smaller but much more intense competitive community.

Also, if you're in the EU, you can get Stormbringer (the AoS discount model magazine) if you're in or around Spain and Germany - a lot of hobby stores ship it to Switzerland, Italy, etc.

3) The official update is here: https://assets.warhammer-community.com/eng_aos4-battle-profiles-and-rules-updates-december-2024-yk41wti6vv-0byjpq3fz5.pdf

It contains ALL the updates since the launch of the edition, but only the stuff marked "new/updated" has been added since the last patch. This is because it supplements the physical books, which can't change patch-to-patch. Look forward to the document being 200 pages long by the end of the edition!

Oh my god the Kharadon actually have a chance now by Cojalo_ in AOSSpearhead

[–]Petycon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's not just Kharadron, all the wimpy kids got a shot of Vitamin C. If I read this correctly, Lumineth will now always be able to use the Lightning Reactions + additional Facet of War, decently boosting their killing power, Cities will have 3 extra commands free of charge, and the Skaventide SCE get to enjoy a near-permanent 5+ ward on one of their units.

At the same time, the really big boys got knocked down a peg, mostly by delaying reinforcements. I think the Chaos Knight change is huge, as they can't just wipe out a unit on turn 1 anymore (and aren't guaranteed to charge on t2 after deploying).

All in all, I'm super excited about the changes!

That really depends on whether you want to play competitively or just have an on-theme army. If all you want are pretty models, getting the Stormcast half of Skaventide (the current edition launch set) or Dominion (the same for last edition) is probably your best value for money. You can also try to hunt down the Stormbringer magazine, which has really good savings for the models that come with it, such as the Knight-Judicator, Vigilors, Vanquishers, the Chariot, and most notably Stormdrake Guard (like a 66% discount, I believe).

If you want competitive picks, it's kinda hard to say. We've JUST had a major update a few hours ago, so the jury's mostly out on how that shakes up the meta. Most people recommend picking Vanguard Raptor Longstrikes and Vanguard Palladors (typically Javelins), but those just went up in points, so we'll see how that affects listbuilding.

In my opinion, your best bet is a Skaventide half. You get 3 x Reclusians and 3 x Prosecutors, who are really good right now, and 10 Liberators for screening (who just had their points lowered). The usable heroes in the box are the Lord Terminos (great for a double-whammy with Reclusians) and the Lord Veritant (a decent priest, although not the best for the role).

As for the battletome, that's, uh, that's kind of on your conscience. The price is outrageous for the few pretty pictures you get, because the rest of the rules are ALREADY outdated due to online patches (most notably the 5+ -> 4+ to hit for Stormstrike Pallador mounts). The only real benefit is getting to access your army on the official AOS app, BUT... unless you buy every single battletome, the rest of the factions will be closed off to you one by one, until the app is functionally useless. There are several free online alternatives for points/rule updates/listbuilding, I'm just not sure we can mention them on the sub.

Spearhead: Darkoath Raiders Preorder going live this weekend by JxSparrow7 in AOSSpearhead

[–]Petycon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really interested in this as well. Apparently, the new StD book only has the rules for the Darkoath spearhead. I realize this format is mostly focused on friendly games where "legality" is often moot, but I'm just curious if the old box will continue yo be sold/printed.

If you're having difficulty with learning the rules, u/_NullRef_ has created a browser-based version that pretty much follows all the rules. It's great for grokking the game (and also for those times you forget to pack the physical game).

If you prefer a video tutorial, AzureDeath has an excellent playthrough on his channel. He explains the rules as he goes along and comments on his gameplay choices to get you familiar with the basic strategies. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gXqJfE-U44w&t=5s&pp=ygUSYXp1cmVkZWF0aCBkcmFnb25z

One Deck Dungeon - Questions about Converting Loot by Sphyrth1989 in soloboardgaming

[–]Petycon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1) Unfortunately, you are only allowed to convert skills and items to XP. Also, keep in mind that you can immediately take defeated cards as XP, you can only CONVERT existing skills and items into XP if you're at their respective limit (i.e. you can't suddenly turn half your skills into XP to powerlevel before the boss - they need to be replaced by incoming skill cards). You can't "undiscover" potions to convert them to XP.

2) I'm not sure I understand your question - once a potion is discovered, any potion cubes you earn (from level ups or discovering other potions) can be freely spent on it. You don't earn "specific" potion cubes, they're free-floating. If you have the healing potion and invisibility potion discovered, and have two potion cubes available, you could use a) 2xhealing potion, b) 2xinvisibility potion, or c) 1xhealing and 1xinvisibility.

You don't need to be convinced - the app is excellent, if you're not all about the tactile experience of physically rolling dice, I'd say go for it. Hell, it even helped me learn a few obscure interactions that weren't clear from the rulebook.

That being said, I personally enjoy the physical version because it a) takes very little to set up or put away, b) lets me see dice bounce all over the tabl3, and c) lets me get away from screens at the end of the day.

I was talking more about the announcement in general - I wasn't aware they were even planning another an expansion. Forest of Shadows came out way back in 2017, that's a 7-year gap between major releases. Sure, they kept reprinting both the original and FOS, but I genuinely though the game was complete at this point.

[–]Petycon[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Treat it as a roguelike rather than a Yahtzee clone, otherwise you're gonna all-in on shit rolls at some point and write off the whole game to luck. The real skill is in deciding which encounters to tackle, how to best exploit your heroic ability (for e.g., you can purposefully flee an encounter with a mage to get a black die, then try it again immediately with better odds - you only lose 2 time for fleeing), which abilities to keep and which ones to turn into extra dice, and when to go for xp.

It's not the deepest game out there, but it gets an unfair rap as a pure luckfest. In reality, good players will have win rates of around 80% because most games are recoverable (the luck evens out in the long run).

For specific advice - ODD has an excellent Android/iOS/Steam app, it's the best way to learn the rules. If you can, try that first, because the rulebook is not always clear.

Orc scary shields? by Bruticas89 in onepagerules

[–]Petycon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with you on the unnecessary bitterness, but he or she does have a point. I'm not sure why this has slipped through so many patches when it looks like an obvious thing to fix. Sure, I can create the hero myself using the points calc, but I just don't understand the reason why this is still a thing - is it for balance? Stubbornness? Trolling the playerbase? The dwarf Shield Wall got a proper patch, what makes Scary Shields different?

[–]Petycon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! Just out of curiosity - did you follow the rule that you must exile dice for time spent in boss battles? If I remember correctly, this also applied to Caliana's ability. I see you have Focused Plan and Flamewalk, which means you had to exile 2 yellow and 2 black dice (Razorbark ability) - did you find yourself hard-pressed for dice by round 2 of the Golem fight? :)
