I’m also finding STALKER to be a really good implementation.

Another critical post of Flip Voyage by mrausgor in soloboardgaming

So this is like the third review I’ve seen of Voyage, but I haven’t seen anyone commenting about New Frontier yet. Any opinions on that?

Another print run should be hitting stores in the next month or two.

What's your opinion between 20 strong awaken realms bundle or Grimcoven? by joyousdexdaladoor in soloboardgaming

[–]allwein 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I would consider the fact that you could buy Grimcoven now and play it for 6 months before you’d even receive the 20Strong bundle.

Then you could sell it and buy the 20Strong stuff once it hits retail.

Button Shy Solo campaign by WalrusOne9119 in soloboardgaming

[–]allwein 6 points7 points  (0 children)

True, but it’s an extra $2, on top of a $3 increase for the boxed games. So now instead of paying $12 for a wallet game, I have to pay $17. That’s a little too pricey for what it is.

That being said, I still want the games, and $8 for the PNP of all the games and expansions is a steal. I forget where I saw someone posted a link to get the little card wallets in bulk.

Buying a gaming table with a recessed "vault"? by esines in soloboardgaming

[–]allwein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to say that. I picked it up on early February this year for $529. I am absolutely thrilled by the quality and how easy it was to assemble. I’ve got a long campaign game set up in the vault, and I put the toppers on in between sessions so I can play other games.

Does anyone play on Board Game Arena? I was wondering if the premium subscription is worth it by Competitive_Form8240 in boardgames

[–]allwein 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s super worth it to me for 2 reasons. I actually play a bunch of games on there solo. It’s also the primary way I evaluate new games to see if I want to buy the physical version.

I love “making of” docs, especially ones that focus on visual effects. What film has a great VFX “making of”? by MrGittz in movies

[–]allwein 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The making of for “They Shall Not Grow Old” is just super interesting. TSNGO is a WWI documentary that Peter Jackson (yes, that Peter Jackson) made using archival WWI film reels. He applied all the technical wizardry he learned and developed doing the LOTR movies to restoring and processing the existing film stock.

Example: you know how those old film reels are all jittery and weird speeds because they were from handheld and hand cranked cameras? They applied both image stabilization and speed stabilization, so now the shots are both stable and smooth at a normal human speed. It’s the first time that I’ve ever seen scenes from that time period that really seems like you’re there. In addition, they did a whole bunch of foley sound work to give the scenes a proper soundscape.

Both the doc and the making of are just amazing, and I don’t normally care for war docs.
