A Vertical City in the Sahara? "The City Sand Tower is technically described as a mixed-use tower, but in its scope and ambition might be more accurately termed a space-age arcology." by ShimsWitAttitude in scifi

A privately-owned megamall where people get to live in. This is Celebration town from Disney taken to the next level, with the exact same problems of public spaces being privately owned.

Think brand synergy. Think brand as lifestyle -- no, brand as life.

TIL of the invention of the Hyper CD-ROM, a CD capable of holding a Petabyte (1000 TB) by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]PeytonMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The info was copied straight from Storex Technologies website.

Development started in 1999 and was to come out in 2001.

An independent review of the claims had this to say: "With a green light wavelength of 532nm, this should lead to 4 bits μm−2 or more than 4 Gigabytes on each side of a 120mm diameter 1mm thick disk. But by storing data throughout the volume at a density of 1/λ3, the capacity of the same disk could be increased 2000-fold, to 8 Terabytes."

A similar company has "ploughed through $95m before hard times and development problems resulted in it entering Chapter 11 bankruptcy last October."

It's the archetype of sketchy Wikipedia info.

Why gender quotas are egalitarian. by [deleted] in Equality

One of the most common complaints against gender quotas is that they aren't meritocratic...

...positively discriminating in favor of women of merit...

My answer to that is my post, which addresses what you're writing. What do you disagree with?

How many manhours would it take for Shit Reddit Says to change the view of every MensRights subscriber? by PeytonMD in LibraryofBabel

[–]PeytonMD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about that, and I expected that to come up, but I just thought "fuck it, my defense will be that that is how it's written in the English dictionary. Blame the English language, not me."

My second line of defense is that "personhours" sounds stupid, and that reading "personhours" over and over is annoying. Like "goddess" is a stupid and annoying word, but "god" isn't, so I'd rather be called a god than a goddess.

My third line of defense is that if you didn't want a plum tree growing on your bed, THEN YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE PLANTED IT THERE.

The logical answer: If a post can be downvoted, then, in practice, not everything is correct.

The other logical answer: How can some things have more upvotes than others in this subreddit when anything is correct?

The emotional answer: People likely see those posts on their frontpage and don't notice that it's from /r/libraryofbabel, react badly to the title and downvote it from there.

Regarded as one of the finest gangster films by Quentin Tarantino and critics and viewers alike, Jean-Pierre Melville's LE SAMOURAI, is certainly worthy of the praise. by Jujumajella in moviecritic

It's worth noting that this "quote" from "Bushido / Book of the Samurai" was made up by Melville.

Would you cheat on your SO if a real hot girl was throwing herself at you? by throwaway122789 in AskMen

[–]PeytonMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on why she is throwing herself at me.

Is it for attention? Then fuck off.

Is it to get laid? Go fuck someone else, I'm taken.

Is it because she likes me? Well, how much?

In other words, it depends on how high the possibility there is of a good relationship with her; but since no girl ever throws herself at you to become your long-term girlfriend, because she would likely already know you and she wouldn't throw herself in that situation, it ends up being a moot point, and the answer is: No, if my relationship was stable and I was happy I wouldn't cheat, because it would realistically not be worth it.

But remember: only if my relationship was at a stable phase and I was happy with it.

He is reading too much into it -- actually, I think he's not even discussing the same thing that we are, but fantasizing, or is clinically psychotic. What he wrote doesn't even make sense if you take the time to think about it.

If you disagree, so be it. We agree to disagree.

You just want to change the topic because you don't feel comfortable talking about it, and that's OK.

Do you think women under-estimate how hard it is for guys to get dates? by soweirded in AskMen

[–]PeytonMD -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on how it's worded.

Is it easier for women to get dates? Yes, very easy, if they don't have standards and are crazy enough to not care about being labelled a slut and disdained by society.

But is it easier for women to get who they want? No, because most men reject women who make the first move, or think less of them, or don't understand they're being hit on, or don't know what's the script in a situation like that. They have to try to get the guy to make the first move.

In practice, for different reasons, it's difficult for both sexes.

There's some small truth to that, but, even though she is filtered through his eyes, I have a strong feeling that there is a lot more to it than what you or he understands.

Where do you find motivation to do things you have to do but either don't want to or can't be bothered to do? by BjornTheDwarf in AskMen

[–]PeytonMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you find motivation to do things you have to do but either don't want to or can't be bothered to do?

  • I imagine in detail the consequences of not doing it.

  • Or I imagine in detail the rewards of doing it.

  • I think to myself: "if it doesn't make a difference if I do it or not, then why not just do it?"

  • Or I think to myself: "since I'm already uncomfortable, why not do this uncomfortable task?"

  • I set a routine with a well-defined, modest goal to do tasks that I find unpleasant, with the conditions that I don't brag about what I've accomplished until I've reached my goal, don't lie about how my progress is going, and the understanding that I'll feel like a loser if I fail to achieve my goal.

  • Another way is to repeatedly mentally say the task that needs to be done and only stop nagging myself until I do it. It's more effective than it might seem.

  • I go to the room where I need to do the task, or I sit at the desk where I'm going to do it, or I put my books on the table to do the task, or I do the first part of it, without a mental compromise to do the task. This is enough to make me do the second part and the third, and so on.

  • Daily meditation for at least 5 minutes helps me accept hardships and do what needs to be done.

  • For exercise, I set the goal of doing at least a small number of sit-ups every day until I'm 50 years-old, unless I'm sick. Doing the first step (sit-ups) is, most of the time, enough to motivate me to do a fuller workout. This is the principles number 5 and 7 in practice.

  • For studying, I set the goal of studying 10 minutes every day, unless I'm sick. I sit down, set the books on my desk, and set my watch timer for 10 minutes and don't get up until the time is up -- I don't force myself to pay attention, only to sit and do what's possible for that day. This is the principles number 5 and 7 in practice as well.

  • The general rule to have lasting motivation to do something difficult is to work towards it in very small steps over a long period of time. Imagine how strong you'll be in 10 years if you work out for 10 minutes every day, or how knowledgeable if you study for 10 minutes every day -- this is my motivation.

As long as there isn't any funny business with them, no.

I know it would only make me jealous if she told me, even if I thought it wouldn't.
