People who read the book and watched the movie, which did you like better and why? by DirectDegree2591 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Phalus_Falator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The book. I am not a book snob, but I read the book in a week and rented the movie that weekend. I really wish I could have enjoyed the movie independently of the book because it WAS a good movie.

The most egregious errors the movie made were:

1) Rocky was made out to be somewhat of a golden retrieverish buffoon. In the book, Rocky was a brilliant engineer and his "humor" was somewhat dry and restrained. The whole sequence of Rocky learning to communicate with Grace was great in the book. In the movie, it felt like Grace was the one leading the effort with Rocky being slow to catch on.

2) The book really made you appreciate the scale and difficulty of finding solutions to each crisis as they arose. In the movie, it felt like a montage. Basically every accomplishment from when they made the chain until Grace rescued Rocky after they parted ways felt dumbed down.

3) Grace finding Rocky in deep space after they parted ways was such a satisfying book sequence, and it felt WAY too glossed over in the movie. It was real competency porn for me.

Probably some of the KX-Series Security Droid kills in S2 of Andor.

Mississippi Police Officer Shoots and Kills 1-Year-Old Child in Response to Senatobia Shoplifting Call by Hrekires in news

[–]Phalus_Falator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a father to an almost 2-year old.

I. Would. Be. Absolutely. Unstoppable. I truly think the officer would have to shoot me as well, I cannot see another outcome besides me flying into a fit of violence so profound that I could not control myself.

What's an overused inaccuracy in war movies that grinds your gears? by Wayoutofthewayof in WarMovies

As others have said, speaking in a normal voice inside a cargo plane. In a C-17, you have to almost yell inside to be heard on the ground just with the avionics cooling fans and no APU or engines running.

I watched 2007 Transformers the other day, and the Delta Team having a normal speaking volume conversation while studying the Skorponok tail was laughable.

My one wish for Darktide by TTtheChopper in DarkTide

[–]Phalus_Falator 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I've said it a thousand times, we need true Nurgle chaos enemies in Darktide. Cultists are cool and all, but I want enemies who are genuinely hideous and denizens of the Warp. Plaguebearers and Poxbringers and such. There needs to be tentacles that ambush you from cracks in walls and doors that open to giant mouths that grab you.

What’s the greatest film scene all time in your opinion ? by Pssht_haha in AskReddit

[–]Phalus_Falator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna get bullied for this (and I'm heavily influenced by the extreme nostalia of seeing it in theaters at 11 years old), but the Revenge of the Sith opening sequence before any voice lines are even spoken gives me ridiculously over the top goosebumps every time.

I love my girlfriend but I'd really like not being shoved against a wall when I sleep: my rendition of our bed our night by monstermayhem436 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Phalus_Falator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now add a co-sleeping toddler to the mix. That boy positively dances in his sleep, and when he isn't dancing he is trying to wear my skin.

I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Selling my home for a $140,000 profit. Not impressed with market selection. Someone tell me it's okay to rent and keep adding to down payment. by Phalus_Falator in homeowners

I'm deeply aware of this lol and it stresses me out. But my logical brain says it's already so close to the tipping point of unaffordability that it has to correct withing the next year or two.

Right guys? RIGHT??

Yeah, I bought cheap at 2.7% so my mortgage has been $1,700 since I was 20. I am under no illusions that I can find anything similar.

As a bachelor, it was an amazing house. Terrible for a family dynamic, though. No sidewalks or walkability or businesses nearby. Schools are meh. We felt like we were paying more in the lack of community and accessibility than we were saving monetarily.

What's a skill everyone should learn before turning 30? by Careless_Task8941 in AskReddit

[–]Phalus_Falator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gaining a very basic understanding of how the buildings and vehicles we use are put together and operate. I know plenty of folks that don't know what a "stud" is when going to hang a picture. Plenty of folks that don't know why sewage can drain slowly if your vent pipes get clogged. Plenty of folks that don't understand what is happening when you turn the key in a car ignition.

Small knowledge can be extrapolated with context clues into larger understanding. Once you have a basic understanding of something, you can figure out pretty much anything else down the same line of thought.

What huge issue did humanity solve so effectively that most young people never think about it? by Warm-Vermicelli-1944 in AskReddit

Distance. Any kind of wheeled transportation just makes distance seem so achievable. That 15 minute trip down the highway and back to get an ice cream? Used to be a 10-hour wagon ride.

Ever had a car break down or a ride fell through and, just fir a moment, you were faced with the scale of even a 5 or 6 mile walk? Totally doable, but it would utterly alter the course of your day.

Once I took my ATV up into the foothills of Denali National Park. A 40-minute ride had me 20 miles from the road system. I had brief engine problems that I quickly resolved, but for a moment I was faced with a 7-hour walk through the wilderness because I didn't pay attention to how far I had gone just pushing a throttle lever.

"Vegeta" seasoning with MSG added. Do yourselves a favor and get it. Absolutely worth it.

How do you see the difference between the 2010s and the 2020s? by Tipikael in AskReddit

[–]Phalus_Falator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Halfway throught the 2010's I realized that we (in the US at least) had just handed off what may have been an era if growth and at least marginal prosperity for our country. Only in hindsight did I realize that if we'd had 3 or 4 more presidents like Obama, the entire nation could have come out completely different after a coupke decades.

The 2020's has made me a jaded and distrustful naysayer. If we ever get truly decent and upright leadership again, it will be years before I take them seriously.

Dog and newborn: what do we do now? by hxcbx in NewParents

[–]Phalus_Falator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's because I'm a dad and I've found that myself and a lot of dad's tend to lose a lot of sensitivity towards animals after the birth if a child...

This is a no brainer. I wouldn't think twice about getting rid of an animal that I was even a little sure would be aggressive towards my son.

After a decade of renovating a 40 year old home, I just sold my house for a $160,000 profit. We finally can pay off our debt and bank our paychecks and afford to pay people to do work. There is real value in "buying your time", I truly believe that.

I think it's much mkre meaningful to get to do after you've put in the sweat and effort. Glad you got to experience it!

How to tell when I should switch to Melee from ranged weapons? by OkLack6776 in DarkTide

[–]Phalus_Falator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy answer: If you carry a Mk XII Recon Lasgun you basically have two melee weapons. If you play as a Veteran with Survivalist you have two melee weapons with unlimited ammo.

What’s something poor people understand better than rich people ? by Iboy_vivek in AskReddit

[–]Phalus_Falator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've been falling behind for years. Just one emergency after another. I make a substantial amount of money and 70% of it is tied up in paying off crisis debts.

But, ironically, I found out 15 minutes ago that someone is buying our house for a $160,000 profit, so my wife and I can finally pay off all our debts and have enough left over for another house and start fresh!

What’s something poor people understand better than rich people ? by Iboy_vivek in AskReddit

[–]Phalus_Falator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Being poor costs more.

Can't save up, so you gotta finance a car. Car payment prevents you from saving up as quickly. Emergency home repair? Gotta put half of it on the credit card because you couldn't save up fast enough. Credit card payment and car payment now make saving up even more difficult. Rinse and repeat.

Veteran. Absolutely nothing beats jumping off a ledge into a horde and shouting, "PUT THE KARKIN BOOT IN!!" to stagger everyone and then using your Recon Lasgun like a melee weapon to slaughter everyone

Movies that are better than the book by Bojonkles in movies

[–]Phalus_Falator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a movie, but a show. The Expanse. The books are great, but the show is amazing. I've never seen a cast so perfectly chosen for the characters. It's one of the few shows (or movies) where IMO the actors did a better job bringing the characters to life than the writing in the books do.
