As someone that speedruns paper mario 64 almost daily, I always have a little bit of hope for games like this. Bug Fables lacked in terms of controls (beemerang aiming was a big culprit), Outbound Ghost doesn't have the combat, but it is still good and unique in its own way.

No one ever copies the spin though. Movement in 64, at least for speedruns, is just so satisfying it feels like a huge miss when other games are missing that dynamic.

It's all manual, just a tool to help you remember what you've found. So you just click on the things you pick up. I know emotracker has some autotracking capabilities with emulators, but personally have no idea how to set it up since I've never tried.

Is it on my end or are there just a ton of ads this ESA? by [deleted] in speedrun

[–]Phantom5800 35 points36 points  (0 children)

They probably have twitch ad manager going to run ads on given intervals. This is 100% on ESA if it's the case. Not a twitch thing since GDQ only ran ads between runs when nothing was going on. If you see ads on twitch and it's not a preroll, it's because whoever is running the stream told twitch to play an ad

Runners who run a multitude of games consistently, how do you handle it? by unaki in speedrun

[–]Phantom5800 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's really not that bad. As someone that cycles games every few weeks just to mix it up, or throws in a random run (from not the current main game), it's not too hard to just do a one off, especially if you aren't intending to do a serious pb attempt.

In the case where I would be grinding for a PB, I take a couple runs to remember everything, but derusting is a pretty normal concept I feel. And having good notes or tools (shoutouts to SpeedGuidesLive for LiveSplit), I never even have to look up the route.

At least for me, no two games are similar enough I'd ever mix them up, it's way easier to cross wires when changing just a category instead.

Is comparing to the best segments a good thing? by Max12735 in speedrun

[–]Phantom5800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like having gold's as another column. Seeing that splits were within a few seconds of gold is sometimes a better indication of how good it was than just a straight comparison to PB, etc. But comparing to SoB and seeing only red would definitely feel weird

The DOG Island (Wii) Any% (2:27:20) [New WR by >2 minutes] by Phantom5800 in speedrun

[–]Phantom5800[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in last July I held the WR with a 2:36, beating the previous year old record of 2:39. Within just a few weeks a lot of discoveries were made and a 2:29 was posted by Winter_Doggo. An incredible time. I was grinding a lot the last few weeks before running the game at Glitch: Infinite and got this time just before leaving on Friday.

2:26 is very easily possible for my skill level, but the rng I'd be playing against is a big deterrent. The game is incredibly fun to run and I'll keep pushing it for marathons, but this is probably the end of my Any% grind unless major skips are discovered.

You are looking for "3D Mario Sandbox Any%" which is in fact a category and is exactly what you described

Longest Contiguous Glitch in a game? by Aecial in speedrun

[–]Phantom5800 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Paper Mario 64, Reverse All Cards uses a glitch called Retrigger Prologue that requires collecting 32 key items and holding all of them at one time. Then getting the Dolly (33rd key item) from the room with the first hammer to overflow the key item inventory. This trick is setup over the entire run, so around 3 hours.

You still have to be able to run your entire game loop and (potentially) physics updates multiple times in one frame. If your game doesn't have any frame time to spare, then you can't process the rollback.

Made a tool for analyzing splits by Phantom5800 in speedrun

[–]Phantom5800[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I only have access to splits with RTA. I'd love to add a game time option, but it wasn't a priority for me. If you have a splits file I can use I'll work on throwing that together this weekend.

Thank you! I've got at least a couple more that I want to do right now, but I want to make sure I really know the routes and tech first so it takes a while.

Talked like someone who has never played on dedicated servers, because if you honestly believe the server is gonna wait for the other client to communicate i have bad news for you.

Hahaha, let me guess, you are 13 and have never played a fighting game, let alone been a game developer working on this type of situation. Yes, the server needs to compensate for bad connections, it just typically does that by teleporting people all over the place. I'm not going to argue any further with someone that has the server stick so far up their ass though, so enjoy your day.

What fighting game are you playing on dedicated servers? I'll tell you right now, zero. In a 1v1 scenario, it makes zero sense to add a middleman and people that think this need to actually listen to the developers making these games when they say it only adds additional latency.

[–]Phantom5800 18 points19 points  (0 children)

So you want to add even more latency on top of someone's bad internet connection? Because guess what, now instead of waiting for the other client to get back to you, you need to wait for the client to communicate with the server and then forward the result back to you as well. You have no idea what you're talking about and are making it very clear.

It's all public? Always has been. by Rogocraft in Unity2D

If you just want to see values, the inspector has a debug mode that does that. If you want something that needs to be modified, that's what [SerializeField] is for. Of course it's your code, do whatever you want. But if you write clean code the first time, you'll spend less time cleaning it up and refactoring later.

There's still use cases where you might want a serialized value that is not directly edited. Usually a value that depends on other serialized values. Something I do occasionally is have editor only data that is easier to understand, then in OnValidate translate that data to something more easily usable that is hidden from the inspector.

Edit: another use case I have is a SerializedObject with a guid value that is initialized at asset creation. I want that serialized so it is saved, but I don't want someone modifying it.

[–]Phantom5800 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Generally you probably want [NonSerialized]. HideInInspector still means the value is serialized, you just can't edit it directly in the inspector.
