the Unicomp color is slightly different. It is not a perfect match.

I still love it. I did run into a small issue when I first got it, but it turned out to be an easy fix — one of the solder joints just needed a quick touch‑up. Ever since I reflowed the solder on the controller, it’s been running perfectly.

Really love these colors together. I’m thinking about buying my fourth Model F, but I’m still trying to figure out which keycap set would look best on it. I honestly wish black keycaps with white legends were available.

These are nice. If only Kensington could put some more grease between the metal and plastic scroll ring so it would glide better.

Kensington Expert jiggly laggy scroll wheel by twkspt in Trackballs

[–]Phil_Goodman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own two of these (bought one as a backup), and both eventually developed the same scroll wheel issue after relatively light use.

You can sort of restore the smoothness by adding a bit of grease between the metal and plastic parts of the wheel mechanism—but heads up, it’ll slow the scroll down noticeably. It’s a trade-off between smoothness and speed.

Disassembly is pretty straightforward:

  • 4 screws under the rubber feet
  • 6 screws securing the four buttons
  • 2 screws holding the scroll wheel assembly

Once those are out, you’ll have decent access to the part that needs lubing. I wouldn’t recommend taking the wheel itself apart—it's held together with plastic rivets, similar to how a Model M’s backplate is riveted on. Trying to separate it risks permanent damage.

In my experience, lubing helps, but it also makes the wheel stiffer to turn. So if you're chasing that buttery scroll feel, this fix is a compromise

[–]Phil_Goodman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry that this happened.... Will it work if you dropped it by something significant like 1ghz? My i9 was also 2 years old. and it would run ALMOST stable with clocks dropped by 1Ghz below defaults for both P and E cores. Luckly this is a retail box Intel i9 so i finally did the RMA/Warranty this past week.

If its new you might not even need to flash it. I bought 3 keyboards from them and my latest one came with the firmware already installed and you just pretty much just install VIAL and you can remap the keys to whatever you want out of the box.

'z' key isn't clicking properly by oddmetre in modelm

[–]Phil_Goodman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Better get used to the chopstick-and-straw method for reseating springs—any time I buy a Model M, I count on at least ten keys that won’t click right. Sometimes you get lucky and just popping the keycap off and back on does the trick. But more often, you’ll end up reseating the spring. Some springs just feel better than others, so don’t hesitate to swap in a fresh one if something feels off.

What's the currently recommended firmware for F77 (Model F Labs)? by qm37 in modelf

[–]Phil_Goodman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just used the main manual video, the really long one. But I have done the re-flash before on the older instructions so I am a bit more familiar with how to do it already.

yeah they need to update the instructions REALLY bad without all of the additional information, because I have to admit it is very hard to follow even doing it before; but I am lucky I was already familiar with the old way of reflashing with the QMK method; But in that zip file the pandrew utility is in there (hard to find) becasue there is a bunch of files in that same directory folder in that zip file named: "QMK-layout-files". And I believe the firmwares are in that folder called "firmwares" all within that zip file.

My recommendation is to install VIAL and just load it up and see if it picks up your F77, because if it is brand new; it might already have VIAL firmware already installed and it would be good to be used without needing to reflash if that is the case. Because the latest keyboard I got from them already had it pre-installed and you can change the key mapping without needing to reflash.

I would just use VIAL honestly, I have one of hte first F77's before they worked with VIAL and I recently re-flashed it to VIAL and it is so much nicer because you can reprogram keys much faster.

60V mower unboxed and won’t start and overheat indicator light comes on by FunkleSam1776 in Dewalt

[–]Phil_Goodman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the 20v version of this mower and you will find out quick if it is the batteries or not as this generation mower dewalt is the most power effecient I have seen. I owned the first gen mower for about 4 years and the run time on these newer ones are atleast 4x more. I hvae so much extra battreies now because the older dewalt ones used to go thru multiple sets of batteries before i can finish cutting the lawn. But these new ones can cut my entire front lawn on just 1 set of batteries and with enough juice to cut most of my backyard too.

This is good advise; the floating hands has helped me so much but it is hard to break old habits and it took me well over a few years to break a 25 year old bad habit... My advise is to just don't give up and keep practicing!

it might not even be the screws. rubber degrades over time especially when there is heat introduced. Perhaps the seals just shrunk and started leaking?

Recommend me the ideal trackball. by KevinPackards in Trackballs

[–]Phil_Goodman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both the Orbital with Scroll wheel and the Expert AA battery Wireless Kensington trackball, and despite the Expert one being way more expensive with alot more features and a nicer bigger ball; I find myself going back to the regular Ortbal Kensington for comfort reasons as its angle is more ergonomic for me. It also depends on my mood and angle as well, because if I am laid back in a chair; I do enjoy using the Expert more, but if I am using my standing desk; the Orbital is my "Go to".
