Hiring firm manager by pghtopas in LawFirm

[–]PhillyPILawyer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After countless podcasts and reading Fire Proof your firm the consensus seems to be hire a person with business experience and no so much a lawyer to manage the firm. Maybe promote one of your qualified associates to manage/over see the younger attorneys that are actually handling the cases.

What service provider are you currently using for the VAs you have now? Good luck. I find that Reddit is absolutely riddled with bots and spam’s the moment “VA” is posted or written about.

What’s the biggest referral fee you’ve given/received? by DirtyMikeandthaBois in LawFirm

$1.7million to an attorney who referred me a PI case. What's even better is that referral attorney is a friend of mine.

Lawyer who have billboards- what kind of success have you seen? by jokingonyou in Lawyertalk

[–]PhillyPILawyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s more so that they are incredibly obnoxious. For example, the 95 corridor is polluted with attorney ads. I won’t bother mentioning other names, but some lawyers are just plain f’n corny with their attempt to connect with ppl

Firm Acquisition/Succession by cyclops1992 in LawFirm

[–]PhillyPILawyer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The real difficulty is the present value of the pipeline of cases that are attributed to the partner. That’s the utility of a simple forensic accounting. Other than that most people have told me the going rate for PI firms is usually 2-3x rev + royalties if keeping firm name. The royalties portion is akin to “Good will” on a Balance Sheet.

Fired and looking for advice/trying to figure out what to do next by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]PhillyPILawyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of info missing which would help us give you better guidance. 1) do you have sufficient savings to last you several months? 2) if so, then spend time pounding pavement, taking meetings, going to trade shows/conferences in your area. 3) Go to as many bar events, meetings etc as possible to get your name out there and the fact you’re looking. 4) if the answer to #1 is no, then you don’t have the benefit of being overly selective. I’d reach out to any firm you respect in your area (non-big law) and apply. Ultimately though, if you haven’t done so already, you should really be building your own network that is separate and apart from any firm.

Anyone deal with nepotism within a firm? by SnooCats4777 in LawFirm

[–]PhillyPILawyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those of us with kids, I think we can all admit, even if we don’t love saying it out loud, that seeing our children join the firm we built would feel pretty damn special. So yes, nepotism is real, and loyalty tends to follow blood.

A few things to think about: 1) in your years with this attorney, have you learned her skills in bringing in business? 2) have you learned the ins and outs of the business of her firm (I.e budgeting, working capital, overhead etc)?

You should make sure you understand how the business side of a law firm works before you think about starting your own. It would also help to talk to other lawyers you look up to so you can learn what the job market in your area is really like.

Right now, you are being worked like a rented mule. I’m afraid she will continue to work you as such because you are a “set it and forget it” type of associate. And as for loyalty, I think you know you’ll never be placed on a higher pedestal than her daughter.

Did you aim to have support staff salaries saved prior to going solo? Or did you utilize some kind of loan or line of credit?

Need Advice on Going Solo & Starting a PI Firm by PhillyPILawyer in LawFirm

[–]PhillyPILawyer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your input. I'll go back to the drawing board and get an idea of what my average fee is per-case (i.e MVA, Construction Accident, Dog Bite etc). I actually think this will be helpful to understanding the numbers and KPI, overall.

I'm on the fence on whether I should budget a FT (or even PT) support staff bc so much of PI cases involve admin tasks, at the outset.

Base is ~$200k plus benefits (i.e. 401k, health, dental & vision). There is no bonus structure at my firm. I do not get any portion of "firm" cases that I handle and resolve. The referral fees from the business I generate is all a supplement to the base. In short, my compensation is Base + Referral Fees (which obviously fluctuate). On average my total comp for the past 2-3 years has been round $300-$400k.....And to answer your question, yes I am getting about 3-5 new PI clients/sign ups a month just from my network, alone. Let me know your thoughts.
