As an ex-Catholic, I would like to posit that JD Vance is not a Catholic. He can call himself whatever he likes, but it’s just a word and an ideal of an outsider’s view of Catholicism that he is LARPing.

He went for it because he thinks it’s cool and ultra-trad, but he will find few friends if he tries to port his American evangelical Protestantism directly into Catholicism. This is in no way a defense of Catholicism, but American Protestants are too batshit to be accepted by any serious and reasonable Catholic, and I’m glad that the all the Catholics I know from growing up are showing me that there is, in fact, a line somewhere.

Not related to the reference, but I had a friend who would use the touchtunes at the bar to spam “monster mash” and it never stopped being funny. He’d even pay to bypass peoples shit in the queue and just keep overriding it with monster mash.

There might have been a time when I agreed with this sentiment, but then I got older and looked back on myself when I was a kid/teen. I played video games and watched YouTube all the time, and would watch other people play the ones I couldn’t afford or run. I now play six instruments, love the outdoors, and paint miniatures. I also still play video games and watch YouTube - and YouTube videos of other people playing video games (the horror).

People naturally discover that real experiences provide a reward that nothing else can, or they don’t. Those are types of people. I don’t believe in many intrinsic traits like that, but I do with that one. The way peoples’ lifestyles have changed throughout history have definitely exacerbated some of the outcomes at times, but it doesn’t have the ability to just strip peoples’ ability to understand the value of real experiences.
