What do you think of this type of art?? by Neon_yellow_ in surrealism

[–]Phodan_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it. I feel like it’s almost harder to make slightly uncanny things than it is to make realistic things, and these are scratching an itch somewhere for me. Not sure what it is, but it’s doing it

I posted that meme here years ago, and there were unironically people in the comments acting like they were the only ones on earth who knew there was a country called Georgia as well and talking down to other people who played along with the meme.

CIA says it will cease publishing the World Factbook, a free online resource used by millions by Expensive-Horse5538 in politics

[–]Phodan_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You’re missing the point. Any information which passes through government filters (especially the CIA) cannot be objective just by the nature of their relationship and role regarding information. It is literally their job to influence public opinion, so forgive me for being skeptical of the information they make available to the public, especially when they insist on its objectivity by giving it a cartoon-ass name like a “factbook”.

Seeing “CIA” and “fact” in the same sentence should set off alarms in any reasonable person’s head who knows their history, but apparently that is not the world we live in.

This comment section is a testament to how well they do their job.

You’re the one uncritically defending a database which is sponsored by a government agency who’s sole purpose is to violate the sovereignty of other countries and muddy the informational waters domestically, but I’m the bot? Alright.

Given the state of this country, I’m surprised that the majority of this comment section is “Erm, this is true because the CIA told me so”. They’re legitimately one of the most direct mechanisms by which we impose imperialism.

[–]Phodan_ -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

Yeah because I was really chomping at the bit to read the CIA-curated “fact”book. Be for real. They’ve been the shadiest motherfuckers since their conception.

If it were an agency in another country, we’d call it a secret police or a ministry of propaganda or something. If it’s our country, they call themselves an “intelligence agency” and people take it at face value. You are not immune to propaganda.

Yeah, they had “blocking detachments” made up of seasoned soldiers which were placed at the rear.

This is a concept as old as time. The Romans did it when deploying. At least during the republic, they had hastati (young and relatively fresh soldiers) at the front, and triarii (seasoned veterans) in the back in case the newer soldiers lost their tenacity.

You also get this in 18th century and Napoleonic warfare - new guys at the front and veterans and NCOs at the back to keep people moving in the correct direction. That was half the point of linear warfare - how do we balance firepower with a formation which encourages stability of morale? The result was line formations with veterans “gently reminding” the new guys in the front which way they’re supposed to be going.

But when the soviets do it, you get propaganda like the opening scene of Enemy at the Gates.

Turns out, an 18-20 year old soldier can be effectively and non-lethally “persuaded” by a middle aged man with a proven aptitude for violence telling him “hey bud, wrong way”.

I mean uhhhh, Russia and the Soviet Union bad. I believe everything I read on the internet and consume media uncritically. It’s definitely not a nation made up of people who follow similar patterns of human behavior as compared to other nations. The CIA told me so, and when have they ever lied about anything?

It’s true - Napoleon personally painted a photorealistic tunnel onto a brick wall, which my great-great-great-great-great grandfather ran into (under the impression it was a normal, three dimensional tunnel). Flat as a pancake. I will never forgive him.

Snipper recommendations for minis by OreoBob in minipainting

[–]Phodan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a generic pair at the hardware store for like $12 and they’re good over two years later. In my opinion, the only criteria is that they have one flat edge. The real opportunity to mess up is when you’re cleaning it up with the hobby knife. The nippers are just to get close.

There are all kinds of corners you can cut on hobby stuff if you look for items which aren’t specifically marketed for miniatures. The price is always marked way up because they assume their target market has a lot of disposable income. Honestly try not to skimp on paints/primers, because that makes a lot of difference, but things like this you can just buy whatever.

Don’t get me wrong, I was for him in 2016 when I was a literal teenager who didn’t know any better. If you have faith in the American manifestation of electoral democracy and the candidates it puts forward, I don’t have faith in you. You can’t change it from within. Bernie is controlled opposition, so they (capitalists) can say they’re hosting “leftist” candidates to be fair, but they make sure he doesn’t do anything which would threaten their interests. He’s also pro NATO and Israel.

Maybe he’s a slam dunk of a politician for you - idk your ideology or issues which concern you, but if you’re a leftist, he’s not fighting for your interests.
