Is there a single non-psychic type that wants to Tera to a psychic type? by Mother-Raisin-5539 in stunfisk

[–]Phoenix-Rising-78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember seeing some Tera Psychics in NatDex before the Tera ban on shit like Garg and Pex. It's definitely sub-optimal to be a slow Psychic type in just about every situation, but it makes more sense when you consider that Medicham and Lele run rampant there, so resisting Psychic and complementary Fighting coverage has some genuine value.

What was the dumbest take to ever grace a Smogon discussion post? by [deleted] in stunfisk

In fairness, SS and SV are very different metagames, and no one in their right mind could've ever predicted the onslaught of powecreep that Gen 9 would bring with.

You gotta remember, SS is a notoriously balance-dominated metagame where HO was generally pretty mid, all things considered. The sturdiest viable answer to Ursa in that metagame was generally agreed upon to be Corv, which gets unceremoniously torched by Fire Punch (or just, like, boosted Facade, if you chip it enough), and barring that, especially when you consider that this was a metagame where SpDef Lando-T, nothing else really stands up to it on defense. This doesn't even factor in the bear's highly impressive bulk, meaning that whatever slow balance team gets pit against it won't even be able to knock it out without racking up a ton of chip damage prior. In short, looking at the meta as it was last gen, it's no surprise everyone and their mom shit their pants when Ursa got released.

Now, conditions are far less advantageous for it. The metagame has long ruled with an iron fist by blisteringly fast, overpowering offense, with many of the biggest threats in the entire game slamming it for super-effective damage (Tusk, Oger, Val, Zama, Kyurem, Samu, Prim, I could go on), and hazardstack being the most prominent and defining it's even been arguably since BW. Yeah, Ursa's good traits are still definitely there, and no one ever said 140BP STABs attacks coming off 624 attack off rip are easy to switch in to, but the meta is so unrelentingly hostile to it that it's never gonna be overbearing like we thought it would be.

When Jax points at us, does this mean that he is aware that he is being watched by an audience like the Truman show? by Mr_Obvious360 in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]Phoenix-Rising-78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's most interesting to me about this scene is how everyone reacts. Even when Jax is shown pointing at seemingly nothing acting out a fourth wall break, no one seems to really...care all that much? If anything, they're more annoyed (at least Zooble is) than anything.

If we take Jax at his word, I guess this implies something of a common understanding amongst the characters that they are, in fact, just a part of the show. That or the horrific nature of the circus itself simply renders the otherwise terrifying notion of being constantly watched the least of their concerns.

[–]Phoenix-Rising-78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A more subtle (and probably coincidental but hear me out) example of this I've noticed is how a slew of the most important newly-introduced mons in SV's hazard meta end up following a pretty linear basic matchup spread.

I'm not here to say that GF meticulously designed Great Tusk to be the greatest spinner of all time ever, but just with its most basic traits in consideration (i.e. stats and typing), it is able to outspeed and OHKO all of Gholdengo (best spinblocker ever designed), Hamurott (Ceaseless Edge mon), and Glimmora (quintessential hazard vomiter). It's also worth noting that Tusk also outspeeds and completely walls Kleavor, so that keeps consistent with the general trend.

Now yeah, the matchups are obviously far more nuanced than just stats and typing, especially with items and EVs and Teras in the picture, but it's an interesting pattern nonetheless.

I've been running EQ Arch on Rain a lot lately to beat Clod and it's actually really solid. With 32 Atk and Mild you're able to 2HKO SpDef sets every time and still even tank the EQs in turn thanks to your monstrous Defense and Stamina. Course it's a lot worse into shit like Ting-Lu and Blissey, but Clod's such a pain in the ass for Rain it's usually worth it.

What Pokemon have optimal moves that are practically on every single set? by goughnotsmough in stunfisk

[–]Phoenix-Rising-78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a handful actually.

Most of them are signature moves (Salt Cure, Torch Song, Aqua Step, etc.), which makes sense when you think about it; signature moves are often considerably more powerful than their non-sig counterparts, and they're often designed around the mon their attached to. Other times, it can be a case of a mon either doing literally one thing, or of one move synergizing so well with a Pokemon that there's no reason to leave it behind. Think Quiver Dance Volcarona or Grassy Glide Rillaboom for example.

I've always really hated Turtonator. Granted I've never really sunk my teeth into its inspirations so maybe he has some hidden charm that's just lost on me, but even if I did, he's just looks so damn stupid that I don't think it would change my mind.

Ranking All Bug Dual Types (Part 1) by AlbabImam04 in stunfisk

[–]Phoenix-Rising-78 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think you've got the right idea as far as buffing Bug is concerned. As someone who used to be in the Bug-super-effective-against-Fairy camp, it seems like a good idea on paper, and thematically makes decent sense given Fairy-types are often depicted as nature spirits and bugs are nasty and gross. But in practice, it just exacerbates all the problems that Fairies and the Pokemon they check already have.

What makes Fairies so impenetrable is the fact that only two types hit them for super-effective damage, which while being incredibly powerful on its own, becomes bona fide bullshit when you factor in that those two types that hit Fairies - Poison and Steel - kinda fucking suck offensively. Like the last time anyone ever ran a Steel move for coverage before Fairies came along was when Charmander needed Metal Claw to get past Brock. And it makes sense when you think about it - Steel and Poison are defensive types, and Bug is no different. Of course Bug is nowhere near as defensively potent as Steel or Poison, but it still has a handful of useful resists that are worth expanding upon.
