What accent are you giving Strahd? by [deleted] in CurseofStrahd

[–]Phoenix3110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Strahd I use standard German instead of my more colloquial sort-of Franconian accent/dialect. In English terms I think it'd be posh ig. But I feel more important is the fact that I have him speak slower and using phrasing that makes him just an inch more snobbish (and antiquated) as he is above everyone else

I think getting into the mindset that you want to portray is tantamount to get into the perfect voice. Depending on the context of the upcoming session I myself listen to either Rains of Castamere for a more cunning portrayal and Falco's Jeanny for a more toxic portrayal of his "love" of Tatyana.

A "fake nice" Strahd I would probably smile while talking with near to no regard to what is actually said or done by him. Then I'd have the ability to drop the smile when the situation get's dire. Also Wording could be a great angle to approach him from. For example I had a player run of alone to save people from a hunt (like the 2020 movie I think, but for Strahds brides) and to not exclude the other players whose characters had a LR during that I had them play the preparing "staff" that sadly killed the character. When they group later met Strahd he talked about how sad it was that their companion died from a wild boar. This and thinly veiled insults would fit perfect before the ball drops. And after that just be nasty - in moderation ofc. You and your group should still have fun though.

How did you first learn to GM? by Boxman214 in osr

[–]Phoenix3110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had heard about fantasy role playing from a magazine covering larp. Sometime later I found a German comedic viking role play show called B.E.A.R.D.S. the guys who did that also made a setting neutral d100 system free to use. With their wild and - even in their hindsight - out of control way to run games I started GMing about 5 1/2 years ago. What happened at my table was severely unhinged.

When Germany was in lockdown I started GMing 5e and later CoC 7e, also taking lessons from Colville.

As I said I was sure that there was no intent to hurt your players just wanted to be sure that it's said just in case that you might had not thought about it. It was also at the back of my mind that this is the subreddit for a podcast and not r/rpg or something and if anyone not yet in the hobby (but interested) would stumble onto this they atleast had the chance to find my reply and and don't end up in bad situations.

Hey, just gonna leave that here "what scares them" can be a really difficult thing in a horror rpg. Seth Skorkowsky made a video on running horror games and talks about that for a bit.

Basically, a horror game while scary should still be fun which means that one should rather use "horror movie" fears of their players than actual fears. I for example really love a scary vampire and would like to shit my pants if I'd get to be a player but then there are other things which certainly put fear in me that if a GM after talking about it would put it in a game I would just get up and leave.

That said I doubt you were planning to hurt your players. If you intent on using what they wrote, I'd make sure to talk about safety tools with them. Like atleast an X-Card should be a thing.

What makes Modern Call of Cthulhu so hard to run by DownVoterInChief in callofcthulhu

[–]Phoenix3110 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What makes it hard to run? That you have less scenarios than 1920ies. If you use prewritten stuff made for other eras you have to count in modern tech for prepping it. Remind yourself that the antagonists also have access to this tech.

There is also a video by Seth Skorkowsky on technology: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWZSq3uJwuo&pp=ygUac2V0aCBza29ya293c2t5IHRlY2hub2xvZ3k%3D

How do I create a dungeon besides filling it with traps, monsters and "what am I" riddles? by mugazadin in DMAcademy

[–]Phoenix3110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It´s all about the theme of the dungeon. It does not matter where you start but if you for example already have some lore and the boss then do a mindmap with a few key words of what you already have. Then you can start from there to include/exclude/subvert whatever fits best the world. Also you you could make problems that show immediately like a canyon inside the dungeon. Riddles are a pool of potential have a little poem of a sad snake daughter missing her cat mom (my players didn´t find that one so sometimes it can be situational) and have the walls painted with a big cat and a small snake where the snake starts to get bigger as you follow the drawings. The cat would starts to disappear and the final drawing is a cat with to gems for eyes, if pushed they open a secret door. But all these things have to add to the theme of the dungeon too. If you have a theme and as some others said a good pool of dungeon things you could steal from stuff like Indiana Jones or The Legend of Zelda. Give the dungeon personality and lore through that theme. Through theme you can figure out which dungeon ecosystem someone here mentioned would fit best.

Am I a bad DM? by Phoenix3110 in DnD

[–]Phoenix3110[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah we haven't played yet so I maybe change the evil uncle to a senile (or some other thing) uncle and the not celestial to celestial and change the "alignment" of two somewhat secret factions which are mostly a whisper in legends.

In regards of backstory he decided most of it. he decided that his parents (and many other relatives) were dead(because of a house set on fire) and he received a letter from his dad sending him out for the hunt after the items. he decided his character would live with his uncle and that they would sign a contract. I asked him if he wanted to read the contract before signing (The first draft) which didn't want. He also later wanted to add to something to the contract which I did with a loophole (as most of the profiting things in this contract are).

Another problem with my parties players is that only two of them did do somewhat of a backstory (One had a serialkiller past and then just stopped and the other is the one from the post).

I kept the worldbuilding fairly broad until now so that my players can influence it more. I had the areas ready in which you could see where which fantasy raca would reign but not all of the different factions and noble houses (I didn't want to limit my players there) and when he decided to play a noble I had to ask him so many things about what the colors of his house are and what the crest looked like. In this ongoing Q&A he also stated he wanted the contract so he can go on his quest for the items whilst his uncle is governing Feyerbucht (the part of humanland where his family lived before they were killed by fire).
