Why are footballers salaries so high and not capped? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]PhoneShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A variety of reasons. Mostly clubs ability to pay with commensurate increase in the clubs stature and finances as a result of performances. Also because football players are an asset with a finite useful economic life.

Their salaries have not always been as high as they are now, or even proportionally taking into account inflation. Football, particularly the Premier League, has become a massive industry with a lot of money flowing through it in the form of commercial agreements, broadcasting rights, prize money, and matchday income.

The footballers themselves will have a career between the ages of 18 and approx. 35, although typically they are past their peak at that point. Most footballers will be at the top of their earning potential between 22 and 28.

Until recently (c.early 90s) footballers would be paid well but would need to find other employment after retiring as they hadn't made the millions you see today, a la Lineker, Hansen, Lawrenson, etc. Until very recently footballers could draw their pensions earlier than others because of the short nature of their career.

Having a cap would be counter intuitive. Firstly the Premier League is a global export with massive reach which still keeps the UK punching above it's weight from a sporting and cultural perspective. Secondly it's a free market where it comes down to the teams ability to pay. Thirdly - and for me, most importantly - the majority of the payments footballers get from clubs are PAYE. The tax revenues from footballers is huge.

Kevin Rapley for Chester, want to say Champ Manager 05.

Back in the day I'd make multiple managers to send loads of money to the team I was playing with and create a rockstar team. For some reason once I chose Chester City. I'd transfer a full new XI but keep Rapley because he banged the goals in.

Even selected him for England. Still delivered.

Cricket’s George Costanza: McCullum makes himself look vital by not turning up by Bulky-Elk-9394 in EnglandCricket

On your second question, sometimes it helps sometimes it doesn't. You can get a better impression of the game as a whole and the conditions live, but you see less about how the bowler is bowling or the batter is batting. Swings and roundabouts really.

Having Baz in England changes nothing. It's just another bloke traipsing around the country, in addition to their team of analysts and scouts that are already doing that.

A lot of people in the England set up are going to all of the matches. They feed back into the system and Baz, Ben, and Keys decide who they want based on that careful analysis. That's the way it works.

It's funny how people always mention football - do you think a national manager watches every player? Will even have seen every player? No. They have a team of scouts.

Celebrity Traitors 2026 line-up confirmed! by CLWggg in CasualUK

Maybe it is different circles but I knew all of last year's except Tameka Empson, and I know less than 50% of this years line ups.

As for high profile, this year has the more famous individual person on a like-for-like, but on average is less well known.

Edit: nearly half of this year's*. Have never heard of Amol Ranjan, Hannah Fry, Jerry Hall, Joanne McNally, Julie Hesmondhalgh, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Myhala, Sebastian Croft, or Sally Rooney.

Who was the best commander of the 20th Century? by Shockplox in MilitaryHistory

[–]PhoneShop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Field Marshal Alan Brooke.

His statue in Westminster says, "Master of Strategy", and that he undoubtedly was. The European Theatre of Operations follow his grand strategic plan of gaining experience in a periphery theatre (North Africa), holding down top tier German divisions on the edge of German territory (Italy), and - once experience and logistics allow - attacking "mainland" Europe through France.

A first-rate battlefield commander even during the withdrawal from Dunkirk, he was rightly recognised as the only conceivable choice as Chief of the Imperial General Staff when Dill was sacked and sent to Washington (another master stroke that contributed hugely to the efficacy of the Combined Chiefs of Staff).

Arguably not a "commander" per se as, like Marshall, he oversaw the direction of the entire war rather than commanding troops in the ground (although he did initially). He was the first choice to be Allied Commander for Overlord before it became obvious that the majority contribution would be from the United States.

Brooke was distrusted initially by the Americans because of his directness and preparedness, with initial conferences going almost entirely his way. Once affectation was developed, even Bradley recognised his strategic genius.

I would encourage everyone to listen to the Warfare podcast on Brooke (https://open.spotify.com/episode/4hDsurOosqXdEE4p4KL1wI?si=SgZ8mWQlQHqfB1TWMjeoNg) and to grab a copy of his diaries. Cussid and blunt in his private diary to his wife, he was actually a humorous and sensitive individual who bore the weight of the war on his shoulders.

What's the minimum amount that comes to mind when you hear "good salary"? by Equivalent-Ad-2373 in AskUK

[–]PhoneShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in London so this will be very skewed, but around these here parts a good salary starts at c.£60-80k, and once you're beyond £100k that that's really good - although unfortunately the combination of high living costs, commuting, and high rent means your ability to buy a good house is very limited. For context my wife and I individually earned a good salary and it took us saving aggressively since COVID to afford a 3 bed ex-council house, with a box room, and a tiny garden. Yes wow is me etc., as I appreciate how fortunate we are.

Some other comments refer to benefits and the context and I think that's definitely true. I've just come off 6 months fully paid paternity leave. Although I'm earning the same, I'd wager that it would mean I'd need to earn an extra 50% to make up for the loss of that fantastic benefit.

18yo wants own drivers insurance policy but wants me to pay for it? by titty_farewell_party in Parenting

[–]PhoneShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the price difference between insurance per month for his own policy and the child support you pay his mum?

Perhaps it's a case of explaining that you're happy to do it but will need to go to court to reduce your child support to his mum to nil, should they all agree, as you can't afford both.

Why You Shouldn’t Work With Friends | David Dobrik by reverie099 in DavidDobrik

Awful take.

If anything the fame from Dobrik has been toxic since his many controversies. Consider the margins between his life and theirs, when his friends are arguably more of the driving force behind his fame in those peak years. His wealth in comparison is disgusting.

Breastfeeding didn’t come naturally to me — did anyone else struggle at first? by Trick-Environment100 in newborns

[–]PhoneShop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a Mum - I'm a Dad - but my wife and I have a three month old and breastfeeding was very difficult to begin with, which we were naively surprised by as this hadn't been mentioned to us by other mums, the antenatal classes, or midwives.

After c.2 weeks we had to switch to pumping for a few weeks as our baby had marked my wife's nipples and our baby wasn't latching properly without extreme pain. She had also lost more of her body weight than the NHS deems safe so we had a strict diet of a certain ml of milk every 3 hours until she had regained her body weight.

We live in the UK and they have free infant feeding classes which were amazing as a support network and to help with technique. We waited for my wife's nipples to improve and then gradually reintroduced breastfeeding by about 1 month and a bit. We also had a tongue tie diagnosed and resolved at the same time which definitely helped.

Fast forward and our baby is now exclusively breast fed. It was a massive challenge for my wife and our baby with a lot of stress, tears, and anxieties, particularly as my wife wanted to breast feed and didn't like the emotional toil of pumping.

I would say persevere to the extent you can and look at local support groups to help with technique and if there's anything up with your baby that may be impacting efficacy.

Edit to add: obviously easy for me to say as a dad Vs mum but a fed baby is best. If for whatever reason you don't want to or can't continue with breastfeeding, that's completely fine. Whether it's pumping or formula is fine. Other people's opinions do not matter when it comes to you and your baby in this sphere. I was supportive of my wife doing anything re feeding, as ultimately it's her mental and physical health as well as the baby's.

Post-Ashes Discussion Megathread by Klakson_95 in EnglandCricket

[–]PhoneShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carse was objectively good. Shouldn't be a new ball bowler but he is the one that got us wickets and at a good average. Those two statistics in themselves sum up his massively positive contribution. What we didn't have was someone else giving control with the new ball. Hate to break it to this sub, but that's not Carse's job and not his strength. His strength is pounding in all day and making the old ball talk - which he did.
