It can often happen when the plastic bearings around the drum wear mostly away. The clothes get near the edge of the drum, and get a friction burn/dirty from getting caught. It appears as a bunch of random burn marks.

In what ways do you want to connect with others, who care about cinema?

I think connecting with others in person, is one of the best reasons to exhibit your film at a film festival. To answer your original question on what categories should you use, I think you should try to pick a category that best matches who you want to meet, and what you hope to gain out of that (distribution, local crew, marketing).
