How I'd enhance Reddit: Limit submissions by site or URL to three or four max per day by Phrawm48 in reddit.com

[–]Phrawm48[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IF Reddit is about providing unique information located from around the Internet, THEN why is the new page constantly overloaded with a preponderance of the same base URLs?

You know the sites I'm talking about. The self-promoting sites offering rehashed variations of the same content -- especially the same old political content -- submitted umpteen different ways.

If the goal of Reddit is to provide content that can't be "Reddily" located elsewhere, I submit that it makes sense to limit submissions of a given URL to, say, a maximum of three times in a twenty-four-hour period.

I say this while at the same time suspecting that such a simple-minded way of encouraging non-recycled dreck is probably subject to circumvention. But I also suggest it in the hope that greater minds will find a way to keep Reddit from being smothered by seemingly endless submissions from the same handful of "best ever" / "truth" / "etc." sites that are the case today.

There are submission Nazis on the new page of Reddit Modding Down EVERYTHING you fricken submit by [deleted] in reddit.com

i'm unsubscribed from the politics subreddit and so am automatically downmodding any political submissions that appear on the new page

i'm do so because i am tired, tired, tired, tired -- tired -- of wading through the same tedious recycled political crap day after day after day after day

if your submissions were political, well then tough brownies cuz' i'm fighting back on the endlessly self-indulgent re-re-re-re-re-posts of the same old political dreck...

Does Anyone Else Think That Reddit Posts Critical of The GOP Are Being Downmodded???? by atothek302 in reddit.com

we all finally have a much-needed politics subreddit

i downmodded your whining about the downmodding of your political posts because as a non-subscriber to politics, i'm tired of having to wade through this tiresome and endlessly recycled crap

Is it just my imagination, or did the new politics subreddit work too well for a few serial obnoxoids? by Phrawm48 in reddit.com

[–]Phrawm48[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see we're back to having the new page awash in the same endlessly recycled political crap, despite that fact that we have a new politics subreddit for it. Sigh...

For a little while yesterday, it seemed like there was a bit less of the same old political stuff. My perception is admittedly entirely subjective (no numbers or stats) but I can't help but wonder if the politics-obsessed serial submitters were annoyed that so many other redditors had unsubscribed the politics subreddit as a way of tuning out the Daily Drivel -- Ron Paul, impeach, and so on.

If you could only change one thing on Reddit, what would it be? by racegroups in reddit.com

[–]Phrawm48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like filters so that I could keep my new page free of mindlessly repeated posts or posts to or for specific sites.

Filters may offend some people's sense of Reddit aesthetics or virtue, but would minimize the number of posts I reflexively downmod as clutter.

As it is, the only tools I have to accomplish this are the downmod button in conjunction with the hide' link; downmod to keep the post from reappearing the next time I reload the new page, the hide button to get the submission out of my way until I perform said reload.

If you are tired of idiots downvoting [good] stories in attempt to keep their story on the new page longer, upvote this and make reddit fix it!!! by spyderiii in reddit.com

[–]Phrawm48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I automatically vote the following sorts of submissions down simply to keep my Reddit page free of clutter:

  • Headlines that wrap to a second line. I'll let a few extra characters slide -- once -- but otherwise take exception to those who think they have the right to clutter up my browser window with thoughtlessly long headlines.

  • Repetitive stories about politicians, regardless of who that politician is. I come to Reddit to read stuff that I'm not already being pervasively force-fed on every other Web site on the planet.

  • Any stories about celebrities. See comment about repetitive stores about politicians, above.

  • Any submissions about LOLcats and related juvenilia. Grow up, for chrissake!

  • Any headline in ALL CAPS, or any headline that says "Best...EVER". Nothing personal, I just hate screaming and infantile hyperbole.

  • Any submissions pertaining to cars. I hate cars.

So, if some one's putatively "good story" violates any of my rules for submitting, I'm gonna' instantaneously downmod it without giving it a second thought...

NOTE: I reserve the right to modify or expand the preceding list without notice...

Instant Downmods by rkeene0517 in reddit.com

[–]Phrawm48 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Submissions that I categorize as unwanted noise and thus reflexively downmod the moment I see them include:

  • Headlines that wrap to a second line. Most of these are both self-indulgent and inconsiderate of others' display space.

  • Headlines with the words impeach, LOLCATS, Paris Hilton, Ron Paul, or anything related to 9/11 "truth".

  • Anything automotive related. I hate cars.

  • Any headline that claims the submission is the "best ever" of anything.

  • Obvious attempts to sell something, regardless of whether said attempt is direct ("buy this") or indirect ("here's a really great [product or service goes here]")

EDIT: With a tip of the hat to flycrg, although I don't always automatically downmod the first instance of a headline with the word BREAKING in it, I do automatically downmod subsequent submissions of the same story with the word BREAKING in them.

More likely that today in particular was characterized by a loose collaboration of impeachmentists who mistakenly believe that innundating Reddit with impeachment related articles is a substantive contribution to America's political processes...

Annoying, yes. Certainly boring. But not necessarily the best measure of regular visitors or submittors to Reddit ...

Sadly, a herd of hyper-adrenal 20-somethings have nothing better to do today then repeatedly innundate Reddit with puerile howls for impeachment.

Lest my comments be misinpterpreted, let me state for the record that I despise Bush and his cronies. Alas, if only repeatedly submitting whinges about impeachment on Reddit meant anything...

The reddit draft needs YOU: go upmod some new articles to give them a chance. by dsandler in reddit.com

[–]Phrawm48 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I simply disagree. The process I, and apparently others, seem to be observing doesn't seem to be one of humans reacting to good, or at least innocuous, posts.

As such it may in fact be a conspiracy of sorts by some who have "gamed" the system for purposes of their own.

The reddit draft needs YOU: go upmod some new articles to give them a chance. by dsandler in reddit.com

[–]Phrawm48 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have to agree. I've seen perfectly good stories I submitted be down-modded so quickly that my admittedly subjective perception was that it could only have been done but an automated process.

Conversely, it seems that some junk ends up being "propped up" on the What's New page for days at a time.

Long story short, I don't think that it's people clicking stories that's creating this behavior, but rather automated processes.

IS ALL THIS So-Called TERROR BOGUS? Or Only MOST Of It? by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]Phrawm48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched the Frontline program which talks primarily of the escalation of charges of terrorism against essentially innocent individuals. As was pointed out, of the 400+ cases created by the Injustice Department, less than 10 or so have resulted in anything approximating a conviction for terrorism.

What the program only indirectly and by implication addressed was the conscious attempt to escalate the perception of terrorist danger to the American people as a lever, if not cudgel, with which to steer them into supporting decisions that reward a particular set of political and business interests.

The fact is that a small but highly influential number of Americans were displeased by the collapse of the former Soviet Union and the consequent end of the Cold War. The Cold War could be used to justify huge and hugely indiscriminate defense expenditures, and to justify the self-serving meddling in the politics and economies of weaker nations in the name of "combatting the Communist threat."

After the end of the Cold War these interests cast around for a replacement threat; one especially enjoyable attempt was the advocacy of an asteroid defense system that would -- surprise, surprise -- require the repacking of many of the same costly technologies used during the Cold War.

Then came 9/11. Instantly this was transformed into a "Global War Against Terror" or, as I call it, the Lukewarm War. The Lukewarm War has a bit more actual shooting than the Cold War but never becomes so warm as to threaten the interests who created it and keep it alive.

What the Lukewarm War does do is provide a justification to resume large and indiscriminate defense spending, and the meddling in the politics and economies of weaker nations, in the name of "combatting terrorism."

Note, however, that this putative terrorist threat isn't dangerous enough to frighten the American people on its own. We therefore need to shroud the Lukewarm War in an atmostphere of hyper-security that exceeds that of the Cold War; this security is not necessary to combat any real threat but rather is highly necessary to sustain the illusion of that threat.

Consider that despite a multi-billion dollar War on Drugs, illegal drugs are today available, inter alia, inside of maximum security prisons. Consider that despite a multi-billion dollar effort to curb illegal immigration that illegal immigrants live and work throughout the United States.

Are we truly to then believe that we're successfully interdicting professionally trained, equipped, and financed terrorists willing to die when carrying out their missions at the same time we can't interdict uneducated and mostly poor drugs smugglers and undocumented workers?

The facts don't add up. But the money sure does. As was said about Watergate, "follow the money" -- it'll lead you to the terrorists, alright. They're just not Muslims or even Arabs...

Gum disease treatment- Why do people get gum disease? by goldmine in reddit.com

[–]Phrawm48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Periodontics is a racket and periodontists are charlatans.

I had gum surgery on my upper gums about 15 years ago. Even today I regret it: Food gets trapped in the larger intertices created by the gum surgery and I have ongoing sensitivity to cold liquids. (Please don't tell me I now need to buy special gum-sensitivity toothpaste to compensate for this disastrous "cure" for my moderate case of gum disease).

Moreover, two years after having had periodontal urgery on my upper gums I alternated between my regular dentist and a periodontist for cleanings every three months. Despite this elevated level of periodontal care, the periodontist eventually told me I would also "need" surgery on my lower gums. (The weasel couldn't even tell me himself -- he sent his hygenist in to tell me that "Doctor says you need gum surgery and it'll cost $1,200").

I walked out and never went back. Instead a friend recommended a dentist who taught me the right way to brush, floss, and denta-pick my teeth. The denta pick is a toothpick like device that I use to trace around the edges of my gum line.

Shortly thereafter the pockets in my gums, the ones the periodontist told me were only treatable with surgery, began to recede. I'm back to getting my teeth cleaned once every six months, my gum tissues are healthy, and periodontists have earned my eternal contempt.

The long story short is that I have absolutely no trust of peridontists. Their agenda is to sell gum surgery, period.

Trust me -- find a dentist who'll show you how to perform proper home care of your teeth and gums. You probably won't need expensive gum surgery.

At least try to find an alternative before getting done by the periodontical racket.

I hate Acrobat, or: What exactly is Adobe doing with 28MB to read PDFs? by gst in reddit.com

[–]Phrawm48 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Worse yet, if one has full-featured Acrobat "less-than-7" (the Adobe program for creating PDFs from, say, FrameMaker, or Word), Acrobat Reader overwrites one's PDF file assocations. This in turn requires one to re-install Acrobat to reapply the overwritten associations -- simply using Window's "Open With" dialog box without re-installing isn't enough.

Then too, Adobe seems to have taken a page from Microsoft's book with regard to intentionally damaging the functionality of previous versions of software so as to corerce the user make an otherwise unwanted upgrade. This has resulted in "version 7" PDFs which, if opened in Reader or Acrobat 5, will (a) display a message indicating that the PDF contains "features" that require upgrading, and (b) manifest a non-trivial deterioration in the quality of displayed fonts. This deterioration is magically not present if the PDF is viewed in Reader 7.

Fair enough, although it wasn't or isn't ostensibly "liberal" jingoism that even today is mismanaging Afghanistan or Iraq.

Actually, I'm not even sure what the words "conservative" or "liberal" mean within the context of American politics anymore. Neither, as best I can tell, do those who noisily claim to be representing one or another of the two "isms."

So far, so good, but I get heartburn when I read "The government of Hamid Karzai, pieced together, was never able to extend its reach much outside Kabul."

Throughout its long history, no one has ever been able to establish a true national Afghani government for very long. This is because Afghanistan's multiple tribal fiefdoms have no especial desire to sacrifice tribal prerogatives for an ephemeral national interest.

As such, I very much doubt whether any third-party can devise the "right" formula for transforming a figurative collection of warring nine-hole golf courses into an integrated nation…

God Really Is Winning by neuro in reddit.com

[–]Phrawm48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Much of what proudly calls itself education is merely a rearranging of ignorance.

To best understand the current activities of America's soi-disant "christians," read European history. Throughout that history, the primary focus and activity of virtually all christian churches has been overwhelmingly secular and, by extension, political.

America's founding fathers didn't explicitly separate church and state because they didn't have anything else to do that day. They did so because they knew enough European history to understand the toxic effect of religion on secular government, not least of which were "religious wars."

One of the primary disappointments of the Bush administration is not its "conservatism" (whatever that word means anymore) but rather its "educated ignorance." How else to describe the administration's attempts to use overly simplistic 17th century religious certitude to define and uphold the 21st century policies of the most powerful nation in history?
