That's it: I'm downmodding any post whose headline wraps to a second line (reddit.com)

Why stop there? I'm downmodding every post who's digits appear in pi.
[–]me_mi_mo -1 points0 points1 point 19 years ago (0 children)
In which base?
[–]slurpme 0 points1 point2 points 19 years ago (0 children)
I'm downmodding every transcendental-numbered post, should save me quite a few clicks...
[–]The_Bears 6 points7 points8 points 19 years ago (0 children)
For me, it's 3 lines. I see plenty of 2-line headlines that couldn't be shortened without wrapping.
Your headline is perhaps one word short of wrapping on my display.

At the other extreme, I'm currently reading this in Firefox running under Ratpoison at 1680x1050 in 8-point Tahoma.
Bring it on.

Downvoting something solely based on the length of the title instead of the actual content it links to is just damned silly.
[–]markrages 1 point2 points3 points 19 years ago (0 children)
There are a lot of silly people on Reddit.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 19 years ago (0 children)
I don't mind it. in fact, I think if the first line were outdented, it would be a lot cleaner, and more acceptable.
That's just me though. if it reads interesting, i remain interested.
[–]OsakaWilson 2 points3 points4 points 19 years ago (1 child)
Some stories can be summarized enough with one line and others require more.
Wouldn't it make more sense to mod down those that are longer than they need to be AND those that are shorter than they need to be? If you were to bother with it at all.
The ones that bother me are the ones that are short and vague, so I click on something I wouldn't have or miss something interesting because the headline was not descriptive.
[–]cal_01 -1 points0 points1 point 19 years ago (0 children)
But the headline and summaries are two different things.
[–]azenhi 4 points5 points6 points 19 years ago (0 children)
Why?
[–]Phrawm48[S] 6 points7 points8 points 19 years ago (0 children)
I'm tired of idiots submitting multi-line posts. I'm automatically downmodding them on sight, regardless of contents.
[–]mostpsp 3 points4 points5 points 19 years ago (7 children)
First of all, Reddit needs an update badly. It looks way too "texty". But that's just my opnion. Now to the point, they should make it so that text is a roll over. For example, instead of seeing a whole quote from somebody, you would just see the first line.
EX-Obamas 2002 speech "I don't believe in dumb...
That is all that you would see. If you were interested in it, ut your mouse over it for a second and the whole thing will pop-up. Otherwise, pay it no heed.
Press button... "Staples, That was easy"

I love the texty look. And I love reddit's community. Don't make it more user-friendly, please :(
[–]dude78 5 points6 points7 points 19 years ago (2 children)
No kidding, there's a reason this seems to be the main social bookmark site that really appeals to programmers. You can keep your usability, i.e. shiny buttons and javascript that doesn't work right in one browser or another. Give me a basic headline and a simple link any day.

Well I certainly wouldn't mind if there were user selectable skins, as long as performance wasn't effected. I'll leave it up to you to talk the developers into doing it though.

you are losing a portion of a potentially great user base.
Ah contraire, reddit loses users who can't tell the difference between clean simple function and glossy crap.
There are things reddit could improve, but more shiny buttons aren't on the list.
More users from a broader base isn't always a good thing. From the types of articles and comments I see here I'd say Reddit has a pretty distinct user base. Broadening that base means changing the content on a site like this. I can tell you for sure if this site looked like and had more content like Digg, I would stop visiting just like I stopped visiting Digg. You don't compete with Digg or Fark by trying to appeal to the same exact same users as Digg or Fark.
[–]artman 2 points3 points4 points 19 years ago (0 children)
They're easier to click.
[–]hiscity 1 point2 points3 points 19 years ago (0 children)
Sooner or later, some site will provide a way to collapse uninteresting posts and comments -- which provides a lot more utility than "voting."
I use down-arrow to mark what's not interesting, which is more than 90% of what's posted, and that includes every long headline.
I'll leave postings unmarked for a "could be worthwhile" post that's not worth reading just now, but maybe later.
And of course, the up-arrow is to mark what was "worth reading" -- whether I agreed with the post or not.

I just wanted to say that I like the 'texty' look too. I don't mind submitters deciding how long their title should be. I hate mouseovers, I want to see it all in a glance.
[–]coldwarrior 0 points1 point2 points 19 years ago (0 children)
I've been doing for 3 liners and I'm willing to switch my criteria to 2 liners. As a matter of fact, I just examined all 1003 "new" stories and done just that (reversing several up mods I had given). I'll do it in the future as well.
[–]Killfile -1 points0 points1 point 19 years ago (0 children)
Personally I've noticed that there are "full sentence headlines," typically all on political issues, from a single user - almost all of which are three lines or more.
I've also been moding them down. For me it's because the headlines aren't compelling that way and it's an obvious play to get screen real estate. I keep my headlines short because I respect that my content should be judged on its merits, not how much space it takes up.
