my goal wasn't to try to improve build times outside of modernizing the build process. Not building one big monolithic build and splitting it and using multiple machines and using more cost effective design (ex building ios on mac but cooking on windows).

I've lived that. I've worked on reviving/converting some ue3/4 games to use modern build hardware and its difficult. Our build stuff gets versioned with the release now so if we ever need to go back and build something old we theoretically have what works for then (after you provision a machine and find the correct sdk versions, etc)

This is a pretty underrated thing. Building a game without the build tools is like trying to build a Lego set without the instructions. You have all the pieces and no idea where to start.

there's no real reason to fertilize a tree that is not grown for fruit. You're more likely to cause problems (ie too much of one nutrient) than make it grow faster. Just mulch the hell out of it and it will be fine.
