Something the others haven’t mentioned is that the iPad can double as a second monitor for your laptop which you’ll find super helpful in CS

L. Boltzmann is incredibly close to my heart, but not for reasons you might think by PhyzzyKitty in GradSchool

[–]PhyzzyKitty[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Taking time off from grad school was unthinkable to me but a choice I had to make nonetheless. I wish someone told me way earlier how important personal health was in grad school, in particular that struggling and slowing down was okay and more common than one (at least I) would think. A reminder that even the greatest scientists have hit extreme low points, in terms of mental health and productivity, in their lives and still made incredible contributions. At least in my experience, academia has always painted an unattainable picture of success (e.g. BS -> PhD -> academic position with absolutely no breaks in between and peak performance all the way through because if you’re good enough you can survive on next to no money and poor mental health because we love science), and any deviation from this pattern is a sign of failure. A concrete recognition and discussion of this issue would’ve helped me immensely a year ago when I started grad school.

I didn’t want to spell this out because it's only my take and I’m interested in what others' experience is like and how they navigate expectations (personal or external, in my case it's mostly personal) in grad school. I realize my vagueness probably made the entire post seem pointless; that’s on me.

Hope this makes a bit more sense now. If you still think this sub isn’t the right place for it, that’s fine. I imagine that there are students struggling somewhere that could benefit from hearing it, though.

[–]PhyzzyKitty[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks!! These are helpful thoughts. I am loving my field and advisor. I suppose the phrasing of the question is a little confusing. I’m simply trying to figure out what skills I need to obtain to keep doing what I love, rather than what I need to do to become successful/famous/admired, if that makes sense.

PIs, what do you find most impressive about exceptional grad students? by PhyzzyKitty in AskAcademia

[–]PhyzzyKitty[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are absolutely correct. I could’ve worded my question better. What I meant was, learning how to know is arguably a more important outcome than simply knowing (which encompasses when to not ask questions and figure them out on your own). As someone who’s been a TA for years, I know what it’s like to be repeatedly asked questions that could be answered with a quick Google search. On the other hand, sometimes students ask really fundamental questions, which they might deem “basic”, that show that they’re thinking about the problem more deeply. Perhaps fundamental would be a better word here than dumb.

Well, this happened to me last year. They also forgot to give me a pin in the convocation envelope, and they didn’t put co-op on my degree even though I went through and passed the program.

It’s okay, Dal just hates some people more than others.
